@coricrystal12494 жыл бұрын
My dog is a 13 year old pittie named Willow, she has a squeaky toy by the back door that she hits to go out. Her “litter box” is a 3 foot by 3 foot boxed area with shavings. She also likes to train new people by squeaking over and over until they realize she is doing it on purpose so they have to stand up.

Mykie: How I trained my dogs to use a bell! Ripley: How I trained my human to gimme treats when I ring the bell
@Eventide2154 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is why you try to phase out treats as time goes. First you use treats all the time, after they really get it down, you start to only reward with treats occasionally, and as time goes on you keep rewarding with less and less treats. This way they don't think it's a way to get treats whenever they want. Though that does really come down to what the owner wants. If you're fine giving them treats, then you don't have to worry about it. Think of it as teaching a young child. You wouldn't want to give them a cookie every time they go to the bathroom, but in the first stages you might give a reward of some kind.

my family has an older dog that wasn’t trained to ring a bell to go outside, normally she just stands by the door when she wants to go out. however, we got a puppy a few years back and did train her with the bell, which worked great! the interesting part is that we’ve seen the older dog ring the bell if she really needs to go. dogs learning from their siblings works both ways!
@rmreece4 жыл бұрын
You know you can still train older dogs to do stuff it just takes twice as long than if you trained a puppy. The whole "you cant train old dog" thing is a myth.
@Eventide2154 жыл бұрын
@@rmreece It's not necessarily twice as long either. It all depends on the dog and also their breed. Some are actually easier to train as they get older since they aren't as energetic and more focused. Dogs will definitely just pick up on things as well. Like in this example the older one just picked up that the bell does mean something, and eventually picked up exactly what it means.
@_erindoesart_4 жыл бұрын
@ruby yeah! however, we never bothered to train her past the basic tricks, and she’s doing fine and still a very polite dog. i just found it funny that she copied the younger dog’s actions :)

And she actually does it well. Tho it is a different form of learning since she is using positive reinforcement. Pavlow's dogs exhibited a more basic form of learning: hearing the experimenter making noices --> food is coming --> dogs salivate. Overtime they learnt to salivate right when they heard the noise without seeing or smelling the food. Her dogs are more like Thorndike's cats. They learnt how to open the door of the special box to get food.

I beileve how she taught him was when he got on the towel you would say "wipe your paws" and when you say that you would make the motion with your feet (on the towel also) or "wipe your paws" and when you say that you move the dogs paws and wipe for them. One of the best things that I learned from a dog trainer was to have a "you didn't do what I wanted" or "that wasn't right" word or sound. We use "uh uh"/"ah ah". The trick is to use something that isn't "negative" sounding. A lot people use things like "oops" or "try again". We like "uh uh" cause its quick. You want to avoid using "No" because 1)its common in regular speech and 2) its easy to get frustrated and put more anger or emphasis behind it, than intended. This way anytime you tell your dog a command, they know for sure if they did it right or wrong. It can help a lot if your dog tends to get frustrated or lose interest. Love the video!

I had a dog for about 8 months. Growing up, my mom and dad only ever let us have a cat and our cat absolutely HATED me. After my dad passed away when I was 12, we moved out of the state to get away from the memories and had to place our cat with another family. For about 10 years after my dad passed we had no pets. Going into my teenage years with a love for animals, this caused a lot of arguements between my mother and I. Then, she met a man and they dated for a while and he eventually moved into our house. He brought with him a 13 year old pitbull named Jada. I was immediately enthralled and for 8 months, we were inseparable. She slept with me and spent all of the time that I was home by my side. I wish I would have met her sooner in her life. She was my best friend and helped me get through many a hard time. The following spring, we found out that she had a very aggressive form of cancer. We tried to keep her as happy and comfortable as possible, but it eventually started showing and we had to put her down. I was gutted and I've never seen a man cry as hard as my mom's boyfriend had. He buried her in our backyard, on top of a huge hill overlooking our development. I still miss Jada every day and I hope to one day have another puppy of my own.

"Leave a comment if you have a dog" is the best because all dog owners are just waiting and hoping for someone to give them permission to gush about their dog! Mine is a boshih (boston terrier/shih tzu) that we got from a college student that couldn't keep her. her name is Farfel, she is smart, and stubborn, and a very over-active watch dog. she's learned almost all commands quickly, but sometimes chooses not to listen. the worst is trying to teach her not to bark so much. going on three years with her and we've only started to see progress recently, but she still alerts over any little sound and takes a while to quiet. but my wife and I love her so much it makes us cry sometimes, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I trained my dog to ring some jingly Christmas bells I found by hanging them on the back door. He was smol & didn’t get it at first so I had to lift his little arms to ring the bell, then we’d walk outside & I’d give him a treat. Once he got bell = out, I took it to the next level & only gave him treats when he did his biz after we went out. He really liked going in the backyard in general though so it could get excessive 😅, but it really did help hearing some bell jangles in the middle of the night to know when he had to go. Also his name was Dennis the Menace 🙊& he knew a ton of other tricks, but his favorite was to burrow inside the couch pillows & get stuffing everywhere while I was at school 👹😭

I’ve got a wired-haired Jack Russell Terrier. He was born in a puppy mill (we know this bc his tail is clipped and we tracked him down through documentation) and went through 9 homes in the first 1 1/2 years of his life before we got him. For the first 6+ months he wouldn’t make any noise, was extremely skittish, and refused to play with toy balls. He has A LOT of separation anxiety and will only go to the bathroom if he’s taken for a walk - even in a blizzard. He’ll be turning 12 this July and he’s got a bit of arthritis, but his fav past times are playing frisbee with my mom, barking at passers by out of any window in the house, and snuggling. My sisters and I have found that we can’t let him sleep in human beds bc he will work his way from the foot of the bed to the pillow, and you’ll wake up with his butt in your face.

I love this bell system. I have a service dog, and she's trained to answer yes/no questions. So when she has to go out to pee, she knows to get my attention and then go sit by the door. I ask her "do you need to potty?" And present her with the yes and no hands. She boops the answer. That actually works out well for sooo many things, like when we're out and she starts panting, I can ask her if the panting is stress or if she needs water or if I'm sick (sometimes I absent mindedly ignore her alerts). Ripley strikes me as the type to be able to learn the yes/no pretty quickly.

I have a dachshund “Buster”. He has tennis ball 🎾 on his mind at all times while he was growing up ( he’s now 16yrs old) no matter who was throwing the ball, he would always bring it back to you. The longest he has fetched the tennis ball is 13 hours straight. 💙😁

I had a Texas heeler (blue heeler Australian Shepard mix) and they really are little geniuses. Potty trained almost perfectly within the first few days, only one accident in the house not on a potty pad

I taught my cat and dog how to 'truce'. Which basically means when we're done playing I say truce and put my hand palm up out towards them and they put their paw on it and know it's time to calm down

When I first got my dog (first time owning a dog of my own), I didn't want her to be bursting in the middle of the night, so I started a before going to bed-routine where I would take her out on our front yard, tell her HAVE A PEE (repeat repeat repeat until she did it), then excitedly tell her she's a good girl, then go in to go to sleep. That way I never had to get out of bed because she was bursting in the middle of the night, and in the morning I knew she was good. Now, when we first got her, we lived in a house with both a front and a backyard, but now we're living in an apartment and she doesn't like to pee indoors, so she will let us know when she needs to go out during daytime (she's about to turn 7 years old now, and she's very much a routine dog), and I am still taking her out every night before I go to bed, and she knows it's simply to go pee. She will also most days pee on commando, because I taught her HAVE A PEE, and she will do it like that if I'm in a rush and I just want to have a super quick pee walk before I go somewhere. (She also get daily trips to the dog park and she is a very active dog.)

I've trained my shelter baby to ring a bell, he understands to ring it to go outside but will not tell us he needs to go unless we put shoes on or walk near the door. Still working on the "hey, I need to go outside" part.

Dear mykie. Before your video where you first talked about bell training, i had never heard of it. 100% because of you and your great explanation, as of today my puppy is officially bell trained to go outside and it took about 2 weeks. THANK YOU!!!! YOU'RE A LIFE SAVER. His name is Reggie and he's a Cavapoo ❤

I actually trained my dog to do this 8 years ago when I got her! I highly recommend it!! A useful tip for you Mykie, everytime he rings the bell... bring him outside, don’t just open the door. I taught my bishon yorkie in a day by doing it with all the same tactics as you, but actually bringing her outside each time she rings it instead of just opening the door. Then a treat outside as well of course 😝😘😘😘
