I love when mechanics use Torque sticks to properly tighten the lug nuts on my car. The only problem is that most mechanics don't do what you do Faye. They keep the air gun on for too long and it ends up tightening them too much. I like how you do it. You just click your gun till you hear the lug nuts bottom out. You don't keep going over and over again. Great video.

As someone who has worked in tires for over a decade, you used a torque stick exactly like I was trained. I know there are a lot of guys who don't like them, but if used like you did here, it adds an additional layer of protection for the customer. It's a hell of a lot easier than feathering them on by throttling the trigger.

@Truth Defender Yes. It's essentially a guarantee (if done correctly) that you won't over tighten the lugs. Some people refer to it as a "pre-torque" I don't know about you, but I feel better knowing the customers wheel is secured correctly. Ever seen a tire fall off while the car is driving? Scary stuff! Not to mention that they come back pissed!
@TheTehman
@TheTehman 4 жыл бұрын
Truth Defender it can be caused by a number of things, including improper torque. Excessive corrosion on the wheel/hub matting surface, lugnut fatigue from over torquing. Application of antiseize or other thread lubricant. Improper lug seat type. Improper thread engagement. I’m sure there’s more.

Great video Faye! I am not a professional mechanic, but work on my own vehicles. While I don't own any torque sticks, I sort of tighten lugs as you instructed by using my little battery powered ratchet. It only tightens to 35 ft-lbs, but I've never seen a wheel lug less than that. So I run up the lugs with the power ratchet, lower the car, then finish with a torque wrench. Cheers from Florida!

I wish I could like this another 100 times! I have had more people question my methods on a tire rotation than any other process. I have actually written up some employees for not properly torquing a wheel. Those that say things like"Never had one fall off", are the one's that eventually find the door, cause if you can't learn the right way to torque a wheel, what else are you effing up?

I've been doing a little testing myself using a torque multiplier ,problems occur when antisize or any lube is on the studds,so they switch to a lower "pre torque "and then "ANGLE "..so in my experiment, the torque was 475ftlbs, but if there was contamination from a leaking hubcap, you might pre torque to 100ftlbs and finish with 135 degrees. (this was my result..not official), basically snug and then 4:30 on a clock.

And that is one of the definition differences between a mechanic and a technician, a mechanic will caveman the job but a technician knows overtorqing will stretch out and weaken the studs and that a torque stick only gets you there and the torque wrench is a must, live the video.
@VitoVeccia
@VitoVeccia 4 жыл бұрын
Torquing wheels properly is very overlooked. Either the rotors pulsate if too tight, or the wheel comes off. Most people throw away the instructions that come with it; saying that you need to calibrate the gun to the torque stick based on gun setting, gun strength, air line diameter, air pressure, and yes, even the cleanliness of the lugs( rust buildup). You did it right by verifying the torque value with a torque wrench. But don't forget to clean the mating surface of the hub and wheel. If not, then when you hit a bump, the wheel re-centers itself, and the lugs loosen up causing need for a second torque. But I will say, you have more common sense than half people I have worked with.

Great video, Faye. I've never used torque sticks, because I wasn't sure of their accuracy. Your video actually proves that they're pretty accurate and also demonstrates the fact that torque sticks don't eliminate the need to do a final check with a good torque wrench. Keep up the great work.

That's a really great information video on torque sticks when i started many moons ago i was taught to just use the impact gun and go over it twice. I never trusted that and checked behind it. From what i found over the years is the variance in Impact Guns and air pressure will affect them
@cameronduff884
@cameronduff884 2 жыл бұрын
I found this out also on 1 inch guns, the smaller ones want to keep creeping, the air pressure can control the bigger guns, finally I broke down and set up a torque multiplier, now,using a MICRO ADJUSTING REGULATOR, the torque can set exactly with air pressure and you can have the guns certified if you need to (bench tested).

You can send it all the way with the torque stick and it will never over torque a lug nut. The extended body of the stick is precisely made to lose torsional load at the rated torque. The more torque you apply the more twist the stick will have, preventing over tightening. And yes, it is imperative to use a torque meter to complete the job. Torque sticks are just a tool to speed up labor.

My old shop used to use them incessantly. I switched to a Milwaukee Electric Impact, and it's different power settings allowed me to forgo picking up a stick set to go along with a pnumatic impact gun. You can pick a max torque value which the gun will not exceed (60/100/800ft/lb). Still do the last bit by hand though, that's key.

Went to a tire shop. On the rack the professionals used the impact to get them taught. Then they got it on the ground and used a torque wrench. They would get it to click, then after the click the guy went another half turn. I tried to tell him that's not how you do it. He rolled his eyes at me, then proceeded to do them the same way on all the other wheels. When I got home, I had to get my impact out, loosen them up, then torque them down properly. I know it's just installing lug nuts but if how someone does the simple tasks will determine how careful they are when the tasks get more difficult. Well done!! For what it's worth, I have an electric torque wrench for doing my own rotations. I use a conventional socket and release the trigger about a 1/2 second before I am taught. It spins its way to a stop. From there, I usually have one rotation before I click with the torque wrench. With that, I have little use for the torque stick. I but if I used that high torque pneumatic unit like yours, I'd probably use the sticks

I've never used impact tools to install lug nuts. I use them to remove the lugs, but I always hand-start lug nuts and then run them snug with a standard 3/4" ratchet extension with a socket on it. I don't use the wrench itself ... just use the extension like a screwdriver. Gets them on and snug quickly enough for me. After I lower it to the ground, I torque them all with my trusty torque wrench. But then again, I don't really use power tools for installing fasteners much at all anyway.

This seem like a good system :) In my testing--which only involves one impact gun used with the same 150 lb*ft torque stick, on the same lug nuts of the single truck I own...I have concluded that a full two seconds of hammering gets me closer. I admit that your way is certainly less likely to overdue it, but for now I'm sticking with 2 seconds. BTW, if you go to the torque test channel you'll see that impact wrenches (without a torque limiting stick) don't tighten bolts to their max for about 15 seconds...everything less than 15 seconds is less than the maximum torque.
@RollsCnardly
@RollsCnardly 2 жыл бұрын
Give me a link to this Video on the torque test channel that says 15 (fifteen seconds). You must mean 1.5 seconds. 15 seconds is an awful lot of uga dugas ! ALL the lug tuds would be waaay stretched out by then, I guarantee it - unless you are using an junk impact or one with a Dead Battery . . .

Great video Faye, so many people- including those who call themselves mechanics- miss the whole point of leaving that bit so when you use the torque wrench you know it’s just right. When it clicked without moving the nut he looked surprised so cranked it another quarter turn just to be sure. The manager wondered why I wasn’t happy!

My favorite are the guys who put on oil filters with god's own kung fu grip, or the factory installed filters that must have been torqued by a very large, very angry robot.

My local FORD dealership sure could use a lesson on tightening wheels. I took both my F150 and Ranger (driven by my daughter) to have service including rotating tires. About a week later, I replaced my brakes on the F150. Most of the lug nuts were just snug and in a couple places actually loose. Next, I put brakes on the Ranger. Here, they were so tight, I had to use a long breaker bar with a 4' cheater pipe to get the lugs loose. Both truck had been worked on by the dealership on the same day. One, the lugs were loose. The other, WAY over tightened.

I've always used the 1/4 turn rule on wheels, spark plugs, oil filter, pan and valve gaskets and never had a problem, however engine head work must use torque wrenches. I like the old school torque tools with the pointing needle.

Must confess I have never heard of torque sticks, I've a mechanic for 47 years and I simply use my better judgement when tightening wheel nuts, I have only ever seen a failure when someone has overtightened them.

Well that's awesome! You clearly have the experience needed to have that muscle memory! While I probably do too at this point, I am a stress case and I prefer to go through the same motions every time so that I don't stay up sick with worry wondering if a wheel is going to fall off!!!

Great job on your torque stick video. I especially liked your choice of music for it!😉 "Must-Do Video #1": Lug nut torque check. Customer returns for recommended lug nut re-torqueing. What is the correct procedure? If you put your torque wrench on a nut and turn, unless that nut has loosened fairly significantly, you'll just get a click with no motion by the nut. And if you do get just a click, how do you know that the nut hasn't been run in 2 or 3 times the correct value? The wrench will always click at the value you've dialed in. Don't know if it's right or not, but I always post-check torque by using a breaker bar to just crack the nut back with absolute minimum of nut movement, then run it home again with the torque wrench. This needs a video!

Looks about right. DIYers might not be able to afford every tool so you can just give the lugs a good set by hand and then finish off once the tire is back on the ground.

My torque sticks have the actual socket made on to them, i was taught to hammer on it till it stops turning. The "give" in the extension (or twist) will only allow it to torque to the spec indicated... doing it the manual way like you did with a torque wrench is the REAL proper way to do it!
@TheVeteranNewb
@TheVeteranNewb 4 жыл бұрын
I was taught both with a torque stick and without one, I only really used them on non-domestic vehicles because their torque spec was usually 65-80 ft lbs. typically on most domestic vehicles your torque spec is between 80-140 ft lbs. typical my process was, zip the wheels down on the lowest power setting on my Impact then use a torque wrench. If the lug nuts would click without making any rotation I would re-do them.
