Wow, definitely an eye opener. I know how to make black but didn’t know this useful way to tone down colors by adding burnt umber to black. Excellent demonstration and well detailed information. Thanks so much for the entire content. This will be a great practice to add to my painting routine. Your time, effort, experience and knowledge are truly appreciated. New subscriber!

Thanks for the comment and I’m glad to hear you find my content valuable. This top works great at keeping hue maintained while toning down a color. You can do it with straight black, it just might end up a touch more blue or green. Roman black is also a fairly neutral single pigment black. 🙏 happy painting!

Interesting; I've used Ivory Black plus a yellow to make a variety of greens, but had never thought to try this method; I will now, though!

It’s a proportions discussion. The white will mitigate the chromatic effect of the black when it’s the proper value gray;the amount of gray needed is often very small. I’m glad you find this content valuable. Thanks for the comment. 🙏

Interesting. What do you mean by “tone down” your color? Is that the same as desaturating?
@OilandEarthStudio Жыл бұрын
Yes. I think of a tone as color being desaturated by black, or a somewhat “colorless” agent. I think of a mute as being desaturated by a complimentary or split complimentary color. They both reduce color saturation in unique and useful ways.
