I've been at Fusion for about a month now. I really just today started sketching as you suggest - rough sketch, constrain, THEN dimension. Man does it make things easier! With that understanding i did my 1st fully parametric model today. I'm very happy! THANK YOU for sharing your expertise!

2 months ago I started to use fusion 360 moving away from 123d design by learning from Lars’ and Paul McWhorters videos. This session consolidates and wraps up concepts neatly and helps me get rid of bad habits I developed in the process of learning a new application. I really enjoy these sessions and want to say a big thank you for being so productive and putting in the effort. Well done👍

I am constantly getting to a point in designs where I want to move things and can't work out which constraints are locking stuff down and preventing me. Often they are constraints that were auto applied and often to do with centre points. I end up dumping the whole design and starting again quite often. It would be great if you did a diagnostics video showing how to spot whats going on and how to unlock designs to adjust things

Suggestion - add a text mention at the end of the box video to watch this one next. This one nails it in so many ways, given the many controls available in F360. You rock!

Thanks! This is very helpful. I'm a beginner and you filled in several gaps in my understanding, tied together a lot of concepts and answered several questions. I've been working through a book with 100 2D/3D widgets to learn drawing in F360 and was slowly figuring out the flow you demonstrated of sketch (makes sense why they're called sketches now!), constrain, then dimension. Also, I really liked the tip about staying in the line mode and then drawing a tangent arc - that is so much easier than what i was doing!

OMG. The arc tangent dimension is amazing!! Thank you so much for that!!! I am always wanting a hole to be a certain distance away from the edge of a part to make sure there is enough material, or something like that. Honestly, dimensions from the center of an arc seem way less often used. What I used to do was draw tangent guide lines and specify the distance from there. Works, but very tedious, and pollutes the sketch with more non-essential lines. This is way better!

Hi Lars, just getting into F3D. I am going to have a 2 or 3 part assembly. Part 1 the mounting bar will always be the same size with a standard set of mounting holes. Parts 2 & 3 will slide onto this, but will vary in size. first model (small) will only use mount holes 1 & 2. second tool (medium) will use mont holes 1 & 3. Third tool (large) will use mount holes 1 & 4. Is there a way of locking certain dimensions & hole positions, while allowing a few other dimensions to be altered? Best regards Paul Murrell

I find with complicated parts or assemblies, constraints are great but its so easy to forget what is constrained to which line or point, especially with the collinear constraint. I would love a feature that you would be able to use, that references dimensions in separate sketches. That would help considerably in the customisation of a part.

Yes, starting your sketch at the origin automatically ties it to the origin point, therefore creating a constraint.

Excellent, I feel like I now fully understand constraints - thank you! I came to this video as I was looking to solve a problem, I have a .dxf file supplied by someone else which has over 152 lines that SHOULD join up but they don’t so I can’t press/pull (or extrude as I have watched your video on this topic). So my question is how can I identify where there is a hole in a seemingly joined up shape? Thanks in anticipation.

Mike, If you look at the date of this video (Jan 2018), you’ll notice it is over 2 ½ years old. And I’ve read that Lars has a different job at Autodesk, so I doubt he has time to keep track of the hundreds of older videos. However, I will try to answer your question. I’m also pretty new to Fusion 360 so there could be better ways to do it, but I’ve always used the divide and conquer approach. In other words, just keep narrowing down the possible error locations. If necessary, start a new blank drawing to see what I’m talking about. Draw any simple Closed sketch on a plane, even a rectangle. Notice how is changes color as soon as it is completely enclosed. That is what you are looking for. Back on the problem drawing, just start dividing it roughly in half with Temporary lines. Hopefully, one side will now show as “closed” and you can concentrate on the other side. But even if you have problems on both sides, the process is the same. Just keep creating smaller (temporary) areas until you find the open spot(s). After you’ve fixed the problems, remove all of the temporary lines. Hope this helps. Like I said, I’m a noob too, but even if someone else has a better way (which I’d love to hear), at least this way works with any type of CAD program.

Another great vid Lars - Thank you. Need some help. I'm sketching up a profile for a wing rib. The front and top are made up of multiple tangent curves. In one version I used a spline. I need to smatter my sketch with XY dims just to lock it down?? It looks terrible. Seems like there should be a better way. What about fix/unfix? I see that Fix turns the line green and prevents it from moving. Any unfavorable side effects? Seems like it was OK when I extruded. I should clarify, this would simply be sent straight to g-code. No drawings or dims needed for plan views.

great tutorial about constraints. I have a question, though. Lets say you put a fillet in the sketch, and sometime later after creating a bunch of other stuff on your timeline, you regret having done so. How do I undo the fillet? Set the radius to 0? or something like that. I know I can't just do an undo, because that will take out a whole lot of other things too.

Hi Jerry Davis Thank you for watching! I would delete the fillet an then reconnect the ends with a constraint. Sketches are very much like a pencil with an eraser in that way. Hope this is helpful. BEst, Lars

Lars, How do you get Fusion 360 to stop placing automatic dimensions when you are making your sketch? I can turn "dimensions" off but then when you click it back on...there are all your automatic dimensions all over the place. Even when I am doing my rough sketch...Fusion wants to put in rough sketch dimensions for all lines. So the sketch is clustered from the get go with constraints and with "fusion added" dimensions before I even go to put in my own dimensions...or in this case needing to edit all fusions initial dimensions. Your model is very clean as you work. Is this something new that Fusion has added with the new UI overhaul? Is there a way to stop Fusion from giving dimensions as you work? Thank you for all the time you put into these videos. They have all been a big help.

Do you have any videos concerning constraining the geometry of splines in such a sketch? I've draw a fuselage: two splines with offsets, closed off at either end with vertical lines. I notice that when I draw cross members and apply constraints to them....such that they be parallel and 3/32" - they seem to push and pull at the spline itself. I've added some dimension to the spline ( angles), I'll try the fix constraint.... haven't tested it yet.

Hi Robert Vander Voort Thank you for watching! The easiest is to right click and lock the spline. If you need to fully constrain it, you need to use a combination of dimensions and constraints. all spline handels and points need attention

Lars - how do you use the X, Y and Z lines to reference your figures. I cannot seem to use them for constriants, or for measurements to say I have drawn a rectangle 160x200, i'd like it placed 50/110 and 100/100. It does not seem that you can use those lines like I can in my other CAD, and it makes no sense to me that you should not be able to align to the grid. In our machines we like to define centerlines where ex our bottles are and where our critical dimensions are thus the different centerlines are very important. Am I just missing how it is done?

I found that Fusion is sometimes over zealous with its intuitive intelligence and created a mid point constraint that took me ages to find and remove! I do have a question - is it possible to constrain a point to be co-linear with a line in a sketch?

I really enjoy your approach to F360. I've learned much and always pick up something on a re-watch. I do have a question about hoe to fully constrain a triangle in a sketch. I may be making this harder than it should be, but I can't get the sketch to lock no matter how many ways I try to fix the triangle to it proper place. There must be a trick I'm missing. The tringle has two equal sides (isosceles ). I think this happens with all triangles. This looks like a good place to group things, but that isn't a function in F360 or is it? There is no one single anchor point to set the constraints to that will lock it in place relative to other geometry in the sketch. I remain dumbfounded. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thx a heap.

Hey Lars, loving you F360 videos. I'm using version Fusion 360 2.0.17954 arm64 [Native] and I don;t have the constraints in the sketch palette. is there a way to turn it on?

Hi Lars. I keep coming back to this video time and Time again to remind myself. One element that confounded me was that I could get my sketches to go from black to blue. So I established that this is no longer a preview function and is standard now but I also eatables you need to fix a reference point ( I created a point at a vertex and fixed it) for cases when my sketch is not referencing the origin ie a fixed point in space. Thinking about it. It kind of makes sense so that the entire sketch is constrained but it wasn’t obvious to me when sketch miles away from the origin. Did I say that right. - now my sketches turn black and it fills my heart with joy. :-)

Seems to be more difficult to constrain sketches with the 3D box checked in the sketch mode. Is it just me or something else to consider?

I have drawing with splines, everything is constrained and defined and the spline lines will not move so they are locked, or appear to be, but are still blue?

Thanks Lars - enjoyed that! Have been mucking about with sketch and now I know what those symbols on the sketch mean! Love those constraints! Have used Geogebra - a mathematical geometry program and the constraints in Fusion do the same thing and make sense! Thanks again, Stu

Halo Lars, I have a question about constraining an arc. How to do this the easiest way. Just to pin it in place. I have trouble to get the black lines. Thanks for you efforts to do this kinds of videos.

How come your dimensions, for example that first line you drew, just pop up while you are drawing, right from the get go ? Obviously a setting and it has driven me nuts for years watching your videos and never knowing how you do that. I think it should be a default setting cause we always want to know where we are dropping and sketching stuff and typically relative to the origin. Thank you.

I have a question. It is easy enough to arrange for two circles to be concentric using just constraints, but how can you arrange for a smaller rectangle to become "concentric" with a larger surrounding rectangle, again just using constraints (without using the move command). I'm sure it is possible, but I can't seem to do it without the inner rectangle from changing size. Any ideas?
@sangansplan
@sangansplan 4 жыл бұрын
You can use two construction lines that go diagonal across the two different rectangles. and then set the midpoint of the smaller construction line to the midpoint of the larger one.
@gilesbecket4139
@gilesbecket4139 4 жыл бұрын
@@sangansplan Ah, you genius you! It works like a dream. A single diagonal on each rectangle, draw a point at the midpoint on each line. Then lock (turn green) the rectangle you want fixed, select coincident constraint and select the two newly made midpoint points. Obvious - now why didn't I think of that? Thank you.
@gilesbecket4139
@gilesbecket4139 4 жыл бұрын
Yes of course: You don't even have to lock a rectangle, the one that moves is the one selected second.
@allyourcode
@allyourcode 4 жыл бұрын
Another way is to use offset, but that only works if you want a constant separation all the way around. In fact, offset works on all sorts of shapes (even ones with curves), not just rectangles.
@gilesbecket4139
@gilesbecket4139 4 жыл бұрын
@@allyourcode Thank you for your reply. The off-set is definitely another way, and an easy way at that, especially if the shape isn't a rectangle - how else would you do it with a (say) polygon - which is probably the primary use of the off-set anyway. So let's call the rectangle a special-case polygon!
