I don’t have any skate friends IRL. But I have a few genuine skate friends in far away places because I share my progress on IG and YT. I want to share my love of skating and the joy of learning new things on the board with my friends around the world. I’m not popular, stylish, or cool so if I violate the unwritten, gatekeeping rules of skateboarding and social media, I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Just do you

Is the firealarm going down everyday on noon in the US? 😅

I don't think so haha I've lived and visited a bunch of places. I think it's more common in really small towns--alarm or church bell around noon. But that's just my experience

Thanks for this video Sarah. I've been struggling a ton lately with self esteem/skating/finding friends through skate Instagram and have basically given up on it all because it became too overwhelming. The isolation isn't good for any aspect of me if I'm being honest, but seeing your thoughts on how you use IG as a tool made realize that I do still want to skate and progress. I can't let my disappointments with lack of connections or even progress overshadow the feeling of wanting to do it for myself and only myself. Thank you helping keep this tiny flame lit!

aw, I'm happy to hear that Alysa! If anything, navigating social media can be as tough as the skateboarding itself. Keeping a solid perspective can definitely help--such as "this is a diary" in my case. I hope you get to keep skating for yourself and enjoying it Alysa 🫶

Free storage. Here's some problems; video improved skate progression is an express timeline to injuries in skating. The social media has it's own problems; ultra corporate fascist advertising and gruesome censored control. I don't want viewers, yet I don't care. And I'm ultra shadow banned. I put up a few inches of Ollie on the A frame yesterday. I'm happy I've got that back at 53. For me it's my truth. And no skater can say I haven't earned a new complete blank. Or pads for the bowl. Or shoes. Or an All terrain board out of the old board ( 43$ made in China toy with helmet; was perfect for testing if I was going to be able to skate. Hospital dead in December. I'm building some back yard dirt ramps for an all terrain skateboard, snowskate , mountain board, etc. Our only real competition is with ourselves, your worst enemy. It's easier to shorten your progression timelines to injuries. Don't let social media influence that.

Thanks for sharing the thoughts in this video. Seeing how others approach social media and skating is useful to think about. Social media and skateboarding is divisive for good reasons. A lot has been changing in skateboarding because of social media, both good and bad. The thing is, we don't fully understand the impact it has had on skating and that makes knowing how to navigate it, approach it, or even how to view it as skaters difficult.

ahh definitely! and I think that it's exactly what your thoughts demonstrate--a willingness/desire to approach it with a little bit of nuance--that's important 😃

Sarah, i apologize for this being totally out of context, but ive been considering putting some slim worms (lil johns) rails on my 7.3 Prey deck--just because i do tend to skate street along with freestyle. I was just wondering if there might be any reason NOT TO? As in, they might get in the way of certain things i havent considered, etc...? What do you think? The slim worm rails actually fit perfectly onto the deck without having to take the trucks off, etc. Just interested in a more experienced opinion!

sorry for the late response...you know, I haven't had rails on a freestyle deck. But, two things come to mind. 1. it might give a little grip for some tricks like underflips / caspers etc, but it also might make them uncomfortable. 2. it might make the board extra rigid for truck trucks, but freestyle boards have a little flex to them due to the lack of concave, so it might pull the screws out of the rails over time. Perhaps faster than a stiffer street board. These would be my immediate reservations, but unfortunately, I'm not sure what direction positive or negative they might swing. Sorry I don't have a better answer!
