I'm really glad you're giving us examples in practice. Being able to hear it makes a lot of difference in understanding what's happening exactly. 👍

Great demo Tom. The first studio I built was in a post video suite in 1982. I Used the TASCAM 58-OB 1/4" 8-Track Reel to Reel Tape Recorder into theTascam M216. then Quad out to BETA-SP machine to sync audio with a 2-pop. Also had the TASCAM 32-2 1/4" 2-Track Reel to Reel Tape Recorder used for voice over and down mixing to stereo original music and program material. No time code needed then. I added it later.

@Junkie XL You are a very lucky man. Enjoy it! 2 questions/requests, if it is possible: 1 - Would you like to show up your preamp/s and other "coloring" outboard gear (compressors, EQs, tape) that/if you are using beside the buchla and eurorack effects? 2 - Do you use a "safe-limitter" somewhere at the end of the chain before going back into Cubase? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and studio info with us. Very useful!

Noice!! I've discovered the joys of classic analog mixers to effectively re-synthesize oscillators. Got myself 4 x PRE CR and 4 PRE BX DIY modules from Feedback. These are Mackie 1604 and Boss BX range channel strips respectively. A 303 really isn't, until pushed hard through a 1604. Cranking the low shelving pot introduces pleasing HF content whilst simultaneously exposing how those old acid barons solved bass loss at high resonance! The Music Thing Minimoog Drive again, when fed back then mixed 10-15% against the original....

Fantastic video! Overloaded signals are a wonderful thing. Also for control voltages for additional "uncertainty", as I'm sure you know. Anyway, I'm digging your recent video output, more please!

nice idea to treat the complex oscillator with the old mixer before going through the rest of the Buchla system 🙂

Hey Tom! Big fan of your work! I think just having a standard signal path of Oscillator to Low pass gate to mixer channel would be much easier and allow you to add FX to dynamic signals (low pass gates controlled by envelopes), as you can always just open the low pass gates if you want a drone with FX and process using EQ / Distortion. I do not see why you would need to add EQ / Distortion / FX to original oscillator sound before the low pass gate. In the setup you currently have you are loosing the possibility of adding a delay for example to rhythmical sounds as the delay will be processed by the LPG and loose all of the space, same applies to Reverbs. I have spent many years working with modular synthesisers including buchla, would be a pleasure to help you figure out the new setup! Ivan

Exactly what I thought, would be interesting to know what he puts on those auxes. Most likely not reverb/delay for that very reason.

The difference is amazing, and really good idea. Is this a Buchla 'e' idea? Never fell in love with the oscillators with the 'e' series myself. So quite a good workaround. Thanks for sharing!
@tracyharms354811 ай бұрын
The signals are taken back to the modular through each mixer channel’s insert jack, right? So the channel must apply EQ before routing it to the Insert?
@bjornlohmander743111 ай бұрын
I'm guessing this has the rather popular direct out mod.
@bjornlohmander743111 ай бұрын
I tried on my non-modded mixer and the insert i/o is post EQ, so you can ship the signal straight from the insert jack if you just want the overdrive and eq and don't care about the post fader leveling. :)

Will you have an episode about the Rebel Moon score?
@erwinm18711 ай бұрын
do you just directly route the oscillator audio directly to the tascam? isn't the eurorack signal usually too hot for line level signals?
@TomChurchill11 ай бұрын
Buchla is not the same signal spec as Eurorack - it has lower audio levels - but even if it did, overloading the mixer is kinda the whole point here 😀
@artisans852111 ай бұрын
So basically, you are using the overloaded Tascam as an overdrive. Cool idea. It's subtle enough. It adds some grunge to the Buchla.

X-Desk has no EQs, so how would it be possible? I believe Tom's idea is to add some vintage vibe or/and to remove some Buchla's harshness with it, especially from 259e
