If someone is asking how to use wireshark to being with, they are implicitly asking what to use it for... what types of situations... wireshark's role in the process. The fact that you included this is massively helpful.

Love this video. Conversation Filter is excellent, hadn’t tried it to understand it, will definitely be using. Today I was able to gain access to my companies FTP server for software/firmware updates. I’m an applications tester working towards my Security+ and I decided to do a penetration test purely from Wireshark. Tomorrow I will be talking with my manager and probably the IT director (Small company) so we can switch it over to SFTP.

Thank You for your explanation of how to use wireshark. I was wondering if it would be useful on my home security issues. There seems to be a WiFi port de authorization command that can turn off a camera. I am trying to find a way to prove this and try to block this command if possible.

I don't understand. If there's something nefarious going on, (and probably is) how would I know? I would assume after a page loads there shouldn't be any continued activity, but I see with just the resource monitor that there are all kinds of connections through all sorts of restricted ports that the firewall is supposed to tell us about... so how do I stop the traffic?

Hi Keep :). Can you block a hacker or someone sniffing, looking, visiting at your home network or PC using WShark, how will you know this? Also, I have seen lots of IPV6 coming into my network, are these normal, I don't know if these IPV6 are from outside or inside my network? How do you change from IPV6 to IPV4 address from outside network? :)

Funny enough about a year ago I was helping determine a network issue as I was on one side of the disconnect and the NOC on the other I could ping DNS but not transit much else, long story short I ran wireshark (I am a technician not HR) well network security did not take kindly to seeing wire shark running, a string of nasty grams and a locked admin account later I had to grovel send my reasoning for use and grovel a bit more. Oh well, it was a loopback issue problem solved by the NOC the next day, I provided little input but hey I try.

Oops-- I just posted this on your other video-- trying to discover where all of the internet usage is going? "HI, I enjoyed your video. What I'd like to know is if this program can help to detect "unusual" usage by the owner of an internet connection? A nearby neighbour swears he and his wife (seniors) have never used more than a couple of gigs a month, ever. Suddenly, they're seeing such high usage that their "limited" internet plan is used up in a week. I reset their modem & changed it's wifi password and it continues. Their ISP is useless as tits on a bull. Help?"

I first used Wireshark to better understand the protocols under the hood (cough "*TCP*" cough) when studying for ccna/ccnp. I then found out Wireshark SharkFest on youtube and saw the different ways people use Wireshark (learning, troubleshooting, analysis, etc.). Personally got hooked with Chris Greer videos explaining TCP and troubleshooting issues. kzbin.info kzbin.info

Lots of information is great, but if you don't know how to interpret that information, it's pretty much useless. Curiosity is great but if you don't know what you're looking for, it's pretty much useless. Where would you go to learn interpretation and how the different types of information relate to one another?
