I was brought up in a 1950s house that had a coal-fired stove with back boiler. All the houses in the estate had the same ... thousands of them. Those beautiful blue flames bring back some good old memories. The stove had a damper at the base of the chimney, a cast-iron lid and a removable ashpit door. The damper had an embossed warning cast into it, something like "WHEN THIS LID IS DOWN DO NOT CLOSE DAMPER AND ASHPIT DOOR". We managed to do so a couple of times. The lid casting glowed red hot and we were lucky not to get a chimney fire.

When I was a kid in grade school i used to help the janitor shovel ashes. No matter the winter it was always warm in the boiler room and the smell of his coffee is a great memory for me.

Try top to down burn - lit wood on top of coal, and when goes to the embers, slide them on one side of the firebox and ad more coal. This way new coal gonna burn sideway,no black smoke out of the chimney. It's very efficient and clean method - fumes and gasses burn to,so less fuel needed to warm the house.

I've been using a similar stove for 3 seasons now, but still learning. maybe you can learn something from my comment as I learn from your video. I start a fire with a few small pieces of hard wood, get it burning hot to heat some of the coal. then can slowly add coal to heat the whole stove good and hot, but don't want to smother it or add coal too fast and remove too much heat. I leave the ash door open to get it started, but must keep a very close eye on it cuz it can go from barely a flame to glowing bright hot in only 10 minutes or so. once it's up to temperature, I've learned to leave the chimney damper wide open, I only use it if burning wood. depending how cold it is outside, I can adjust the fresh air vent on the ash door, and it'll keep burning at a steady rate all day or night. once it's going that vent is always more than half closed or the fire will eventually go out of control. on occasion I've even closed that vent completely and it'll stay barely burning all day from just the little bit of air leaks into the stove and from air circulating down the chimney. then when I need it at night I can open that vent and the fire kicks right back up again. it works well for me, although I have damaged the banking plate from excessive heat, from starting the fire then falling asleep before it's ready, not good. it only starts with an invisible crack, then grows and deteriorates the metal until it splits in two. from what I know, can't weld cast iron, so I'm looking for a solution or a replacement plate. I think a contributing factor was a small gap below the banking plate, which let in a slight bit more air, got it hotter in that area, and caused the fracture. one more thing to note, coal likes to be piled deep. get a thick bed of hot coals, rake and shake the ash out once or twice a day, and it'll keep burning hot.

We have a Jotul Oslo 500 wood stove which gives off quality radiant heat. The central HVAC system is geothermal loop electric but there is nothing quite like the feel of radiant wood heat coming from a cast iron stove. I've never had experience with a coal stove, but as a kid way back when I remember my brother and I had to take turns shoveling coal into a hopper for a coal furnace. Great channel.

Here in Wyoming, bituminous coal is cheap and plentiful. I don’t like to use it in our Hitzer coal stove for a couple reasons... first, it’s soft and crumbly... it also fuses easily, creating clinkers... last of all, it stinks when burned. I have been bringing in a few tons of Blaschak nut size anthracite every year, but this month, I bought a ton of anthracite nut from our local Tractor Supply for the same price as Blaschak back east. I’m pretty impressed and will use Tractor Supply anthracite from now on.

I have the same stove except my doors are brass and sliding to the right closes it. I've had great luck with filling the stove 3/4 of the way up on the front side and tapering it up to the top of the fire brick on the back side. Leave the door open on the bottom for about 15 minutes or until you see embers starting to glow through the coal. Shut the door and set it to about that pea size. And in the morning it still doesn't need to be touched. But I just shake it down a bit in the morning and wait until late afternoon before filling it again. Most 30-40 degree days it only gets filled once a day. Great stove. Try that method and see how it works for you.

If you should buy yourself a good humidity monitor like mini thermopro you'll quickly see that little pot of water does next to nothing to affect the humidity of the house.. I have a modified '76 fisher I heat with, and use a large humidifier that puts out 5 gallons per day and its still not enough to hold above 30% when temps get below 15° outside.. now if you have a newer stove that draws its combustion air from outside the home that'll cut your water requirements considerably because you're no longer exhausting your room air out your chimney and are then keeping more of what humidity you have in the house.

Morning Joe.... Thanks for the stove follow up. A couple of questions I'd like to ask, and you're probably going to answer them in the next video. First, how long did you have to wait before closing down the stove after you added the coal to the wood embers? And what you'll probably answer in the next video is, how dusty does your house get using wood versus coal or both? When I first moved into my home I had a combination heat pump with electric backup and wood stove and the house used to get pretty dusty over a heating season from removing the coals and cleaning out the ash bin every day. When I purchased my outdoor wood stove and piped hot water to heat ex-changers in the house I almost totally eliminated the dust on everything. I have allergies and it was a major improvement getting the wood stove out of the house. I still use a fireplace (can't have a log cabin without one!!) but I don't have those issues like when I had the wood stove in the cellar. I only have to load up my outdoor wood stove once every 24 hours, sometimes twice a day if we stay below zero temps, and I like that because I'm not always tending it. Other than the Winter season, I only clean out my stove twice, maybe three times a year. During the Winter the coals build up more so I'm cleaning them out every three weeks or so. A lot less maintenance than having a stove in the house and I think, a lot healthier. The only draw back with the outdoor stove is when the power goes out, which is quite often here, I have no heat to the house, hence a generator is a necessity. The water from the stove is pumped into the house by a small 75 watt pump so it doesn't take much to get it there. I'm wondering if coal would be a better heat source in an outdoor wood furnace, maybe tending it less than the wood stove itself. But like you mentioned earlier, we're getting to an age that is making it more difficult to deal with all the work. Looking forward to the next video, thanks.

Good morning Mr Jo Good information on burning coal and wood. I have a Nashua wood stove up in my mountain home. I’ve had it for 20 plus years and heats up our downstairs of the house beautifully. I burn red oak when I have it , burns nice and hot. I think the company is not in business anymore because I wanted to buy another one. My wife and I will be up staying up there after Christmas for s few months. I love being there as my home is like yours with my closet neighbor being s quarter of mile away. There’s nothing like wood or coal heat. Our downstairs is about 1200 sq ft and I can get the bottom floor up to 75 in a couple hours. Come on down and cut some trees. Lol I have plenty!! Nashua is a pretty good stove, I use to sell them in new homes when coal stoves were "in" back in the 1980s. I bought many of them. I have seen them last 25 to 30 years with just a change in the fire brick. Don't be tempting me, I am considering moving if the sun does not shine soon.

Josaljo Won Come on down Mr Jo and Sally You are welcome at house anytime !! I own 236 acres that I bought years ago. Only 3 acres are cleared around the house, the rest is all timber. Through the years I have remodeled the whole house. There is not one length of original pipe or electrical wiring. I just rebuilt the whole kitchen AGAIN lol as my wife is a fantastic cook. I built her a 10 ft island with her 6 burner gas stove top and farm sink built into it. The house originally had 1 bathroom built in 1948. I tore that one out and added 2 more bathrooms total of 3 now. Now when my kids come with their families there’s plenty. I have some really big cherry trees that I am going to cut down after the Holidays and mill A couple of the General Contractors who hire me out to trim out their houses are not happy when i disappear with my wife for 3 months. I laugh and tell them at 66 yrs old I get to do what I want. Lol After 40 plus years I still love being a carpenter and love the smell of cut wood. Come on down Jo, the coffee is on and we will go cut some trees. Stay warm up there my friend 😄

I didn't know you could burn coal and wood at the same time. My father used both but that was in an old, huge furnace in the basement. It was beautiful. I actually used to make fires in the morning cuz when we got up in the morning, it was freezing in our big, old, drafty house. I wouldn't want to get out of bed as a kid, but we built a tolerance. You need to have not one but several Carbon Monoxide detectors if you heat with any method that burns fuel. Yes that includes natural gas. Redundancy is the key. Two on each floor. If you have plug in detectors the second detector on each floor needs to be battery powered with an audible low battery signal. Never enter an area with a high level alarm. Leave the house fast, Then, Call 911. Fire / Rescue will enter with Scott Air Packs. They'd rather fan bad air out, than carry you out.

(IT DOESN'T SAY AVOID TRIBULATION BY RAPTURE), 23“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24“For false christs and FALSE PROPHETS will rise and show great signs and wonders to DECEIVE, IF POSSIBLE, EVEN THE ELECT. 25“SEE, I HAVE TOLD YOU BEFOREHAND. 26“Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27“For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 29“IMMEDIATELY AFTERNOON HE TRIBULATIONS of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31“And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER HIS ELECT from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. CHRIST GATHERS HIS ELECT AFTER THE TRIBULATION!
