Here’s how I’d’ve done it (set in the CGI timeline): “Old Stuck-Up” starts with the arrival of twin Class 08s Paxton and Sidney. While the two are friendly, James reminds everyone of what happened with Diesel- perhaps they’re putting on an act. As he’s ranting about how much trouble diesels cause, he forgets to notice how one of his flatbeds’ bogies has slipped onto another set of tracks. The flatbed knocks over a signal. Surprise, this is also half “Crossed Lines”! “Mixed Signals” is about Sidney’s forgetfulness and his driver’s naïveté regarding Sodor’s railways causing much confusion and delay. James oversees Sidney’s bumbling and makes a rude comment- something that earns him the rebuke of Edward. “Paxton’s Little Friends” acts as Paxton’s first introduction to the Skarloey Railway crew. Unfortunately, Sir Handel and Peter Sam are in no mood to make friends with him due to James having spread rumors about him. This results in Duncan, in a rare moment of being the voice of reason, having to sort things out and give Paxton a proper chance. “James Runs Dry” takes the place of both “Deep Freeze” and “Gordon Runs Dry”. A pebble punctures James’s boiler and, despite Paxton’s concerns, he puffs on until the leak renders him unable to steam. Paxton comes by, and James assumes the worst- only to be surprised by how kind Paxton is about the matter. The two have a chat on their way to the Steamworks, and James decides to put his distaste for diesels aside.

I for one liked how Christopher Awdry addressed the serious real-life issue of racism in this book. Speaking of serious issues, the books The Twin Engines and Enterprising Engines also addressed the issue of asylum seekers, in a way that makes it clear that the Rev W Awdry stands with them, and supports helping them. Douglas and Oliver are both asylum seekers who fled to Sodor to escape scrap, and reading and thinking about both their backstories helped shape my own view on asylum seekers in the real world. I would love to see you make a video on this once you're done with TUGS month!

That is a nice idea. James never had to really answer for what he said about Rusty to Duncan in "rock 'n roll". It certainly makes sense that Duncan would later defend Rusty as by then Rusty had earned his respect and gratitude; Duncan would not be impressed by James' attitude the next time he badmouthed diesels. It is perhaps fitting that Rusty would be the one to help James out and finally resolve James issue with Diesels in the TV Series. As for the railway series a random Diesel (The Works Diesel) James barely knew to finally change his mind just doesn't seem right but then again it can still serve as a bit of an eye opener for how James would feel about Diesels from the other railway in general. James barely knew Old Stuck Up and he displayed the typical attitude James seemed to expect from Diesels from the other railway. By contrast the Diesel that won him over may have been able to change James outlook purely on the merit that he was the first Diesel who presumably still belonged to British Rail to be nice to James. Sure James liked Boco and Bear but they belonged to the fat controller. Though one could argue Bear should have won James over already as he did try to defend the railway from D199's hostility; after all when he and D199 came they both still belonged to British Rail initially.
@cindersandashesuk5744 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, and I agree. While I get that a stranger diesel can show that good people can come from anywhere, doing that just wastes opportunities to flesh out already established RWS characters that haven't had much time in the spotlight (Rusty & Bear etc). Plus James liking Boco and Bear never made sense to me since the only time prior to this book that he interacted with either of them was when he belittled Boco to Duck. How did Boco win him over? Just seems like a throw away line and wasted story potential. Thanks again! :)
@Damocles178 Жыл бұрын
@@cindersandashesuk5744 Absolutely. Before even being bought by the Fat Controller Bear defended the Fat Controllers engines. He alone should've had the power to change James attitude despite being under British Railways at the time. At the very least in the Railway Series illustration of Super Rescue it's implied James was there for the argument between D199 and the others. Still would be nice to have seen proper interaction between James, Boco and Bear.

Another logical but impressive interpretation on the Railway Series book, nice work Cinder. Allow me to share my own spin on the story arc. My interpretation is the stories would take place around Season 4 (acknowledging James and Duncan’s interaction in Rock n Roll). But I would move Fire Engine to Season 5 because it will be a fitting episode in a series about disasters and horrors. My take on the three other stories build off the character conflict from Season 3’s Buzz Buzz. In that episode, James has a dislike towards BoCo and it was never resolved afterwards. I think he will overcome his diesel prejudice with developing a friendship with a diesel he knows, and it will also give BoCo some characterization. In Crossed Lines, James badmouths about BoCo to the others before getting his comeuppance with the signal. In Deep Freeze, BoCo is the one to rescue James and change his mind about diesels. Finally, I would use Old Stuck Up as the last chapter of the story arc, as a way to flesh out James’ newfound friendship with BoCo. Class 40 will be in place of the visiting diesel whom BoCo showed around. Instead of Henry cracking a joke, James will be the one to have a laugh with BoCo. And that’s my version of James and the Diesel Engines. Again, good work on your part Cinder.

James & the Diesel Engines is a fun concept that's not executed well. I would've liked it if this were Bear instead of a random Works diesel because the latter feels sorta on the Mainland as if he still belongs to British Railways. Also, Henry's story is fun but why this book? The same issue I had is also w/ Percy & the Trousers being in Henry the Green Engine when it should've been in Percy's book to give a prologue to Percy's arc. Fire Engine could've easily taken place within the events of Out of Puff and Overhaul to give a build up for Henry's overhaul. What do you think?

Fire Engine and Deep Freeze are both adapted during Season 5 (With James in Edward's role and Derek in the Works Diesel's role). As for Old-Stuck-Up....well, I have many ideas! 1. Adapt it during Season 2 and have Diesel in Old-Stuck-Up's role (By giving him a second chance) and Daisy in Bear's role. 2. Adapt it during Season 5 and have D261 in Old-Stuck-Up's role (Again, by giving him a second chance) 3. Adapt it as a short prequel film to Thomas and the Magic Railroad and have Diesel 10 in Old-Stuck-Up's role and Toby in BoCo's role (Only instead of crashing into the back wall of the shed, Diesel 10 derails and, in a attempt to stop himself, swings his claw (Pinchy) wildly around, only for his claw to smash into the side of the shed making a hole in it, hence why there's scaffolding in the film). 4. Adapt it during Season 21 and have it take place after Super Rescue (With D199/Spamcam in Old-Stuck-Up's role).
@12Snowpeach Жыл бұрын
Here's how I would've done it. Old Stuck Up replaces some nothing episode like Baa! in Season 5 and will give Douglas a role who was totally absent anywhere that season with Old Stuck Up being a repaint of Class 40 much like how Bertram is a repaint of Duke, Crossed Lines would take place in Season 6 replacing some unlikable episode like Thomas, Percy and the Squeak or hell even ax Dunkin' Duncan another weak episode that season which showcases Duncan stepping into boundaries, Fire Engine and Deep Freeze replace What's the Matter with Henry? and James and the Queen of Sodor's placements in Season 7, but instead of Edward rescuing the express it's an existing diesel character like Salty as we've seen smaller diesels move heavy coaches. Look at Emily and the Special Cars from the HiT era, and it would end with Henry making a cheeky remark to James "See James diesels are alright and trustworthy after all." with James' comeback being "You should've controlled your temper. You would've been better off. Ah well as least you're not willing to make a rude remark about the color of fire engines now." Which in turn would make the story relevant to diesels and in Deep Freeze it's Salty that replaces the Works Diesel and James admits to Henry that Salty really is a handyman like after all which can speak for all diesels which puts a conclusive end to James in the classic series much better than some rehash of his attitude in Dirty Objects, but his karma being nowhere near as sympathetic. What do you think?

If I were to adapt "Old Stuck Up" It would be a flashback story told by James and Class 40 would be repainted BR Blue Daisy traveling 2 ways at once in "Crossed Lines" is an ingenious idea so I'd keep that, maybe as well as a signal, Daisy could also collide with a small building or even better, a support for a bridge and have it be a half adaption of TUGS's High Tide. Of course, I prefer to keep things faithful as possible to the RWS so I'd have the "Crossed Lines" adaption as a separate story to the real one with the real one being mentioned by James in the episode

While I can understand why some may look down upon the Works Diesel, I do see why he/she was needed. If that had been BoCo or Bear, James may not have changed as he already knew them. What makes the Works Diesel different from other good diesels, except Pip and Emma, is he/she is a good Diesel despite being part of the most numerous and one of the most successful mainline Diesel classes in the UK. However, I would probably end the book with James rescuing a Diesel from scrap, much like T1E2H3 did with Oliver and Paxton, but with James and Old Stuck-Up, allowing OSU to redeem himself, making him different from D261 or D199. Also, I would probably move the book to Season 4 so we would've seen Bowler. His model could be repainted to make Old Stuck Up since they're both Class 40s.

Man! Your adaption ideas are very clever! Here is how I would adapt James and the Diesel Engines Old Stuck-Up The story is part of Season 4 in my version, but Spamcan from Super Rescue takes the role of Old Stuck-Up as I don't want him to be a one time character. Crossed Lines Crossed Lines is part of Season 2 in my version, but it takes place after Edward's Exploit whereas James' hatred towards Diesels is still very present. Fire-Engine Fire-Engine is part of Season 4 in my version, but it's adapted quite beat for beat and the fire starts to roar like crazy in order to add a bit more impact. Deep Freeze Deep Freeze is also part of Season 2 in my version, but it's set before Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree and it will explain why it's snowing in the aforementioned Christmas episode. But Boco is the one who helps out James here. For your next Railway Series adaption, I still think it could be Great Little Engines.

@buzzytrombone43539 ай бұрын
I would've adapted elements of it in the story of Day of the Diesels with James taking Percy's role because he would want to give some lip to Diesel 10, only following his requests about the Dieselworks as a way of getting him in trouble for the disgusting stuff he did to The Fat Controller, who he had a bad run in with, with the crashes from Old Stuck Up and Crossed Lines being the inciting incident for the story and the second act break respectively.
@LukeOfSodor22 Жыл бұрын
TBH, if I were to write fire engines, I would replace Edward with either BoCo or Bear. Don't get me wrong, i love Edward he is my favourite character, but think about it if James hears that a diesel engine is taking a steam engines train that will give James alot more amo for his hate for diesels believing that a diesel is replacing a proper engine until deep freeze when he realises that the sodor diesels aren't here to replace any steam engines, maybe you could have the works diesel take Henry to the works and James thinks the works diesel is taking Henry to be scrapped and then the works diesel brings James to the works and then James sees Henry in the works and realises that Henry wasn't scrapped.

Every time I see this book discussed I see the point of 'Deep Freeze' missed. The works diesel is deliberately an unknown. He is a representation of every diesel and could be anyone. James knows and accepts Boco and Bear, they cannot change his opinion on 'other' diesels as James knows and accepts them as individuals already. The works diesel has to be new, he has to be unknown, he has to be a character james does not initially accept and has to make that effort to win him around. If it had been Boco or Bear then James would have no character development as he has no prejudice against them to overcome. Otherwise great video and great interpretation of the stories. Tying in with the original intent of the story, I do like your idea of using Rusty as that diesel. It still works as the two have had no interaction prior to this
@cindersandashesuk5744 Жыл бұрын
The same thing could have easily been achieved by using a diesel that James has never been known to interact with (Rusty/Bear). James liking Boco and Bear doesn't even make sense since he's never interacted with the latter and only ever been rude to the former. How did they win him over? Wasted opportunity. It is always better to flesh out underused characters than needlessly introduced randos for the purpose of a single story. Even if we were to accept that James likes Boco & Bear, then there's no reason to say that we can't use someone like Rusty, who is just as much of a stranger to James as is the works diesel. There was no need to introduce a stranger over giving more depth to already existing character that deserve more than they got.

For my own version, I think Bear would be the diesel who helps James during the deep freeze, then form a friendship. Bear and James could bond over their paintwork. Bear could bring James down to earth, while James teaches Bear to embrace his individuality. Then maybe have the THEBURIEDTRUCK's story "Rescue and Redemption" as a proper closing, and to give viewers a backstory to Bear's name. Then, when Dudley the Vagrant Engine arrives, James becomes conflicted about whether to stay loyal to Bear or Dudley, and ultimately does the right thing. I wrote a small story titled "False Friends" that explores that. If anyone's interested in reading or helping me improve it, I could upload it to Google Docs.

Your class is the most superior? Let’s see: You broke down D199 became a spamcan That stuck up diesel rammed into a wall Ah, yes, totally the greatest class out there……
@D261-Class40 Жыл бұрын
@@bernarda1247 first off, 199 is not the same class as me, and second off, Roderick is just dumb, I'm the greatest one! AND THE ONLY REASON I BROKE DOWN IS BECAUSE OF A DAMN HAT

Source: duck makes diesel look like a total jerk on his first day You care nothing for your trains! Source: incident where a diesel left their coaches and passenger behind You just moan for a fitter! Source: A spamcan broke down and was whining for a fitter when flying Scotsman came to visit Sodor Engines bring it home! Only with one cylinder! Source: Edward broke down but got passengers to vicarston when boco was on his second day on the NWR, heard it was because awndrys books about the NWR engines, they like engines more than diesels! THIS IS 100% FACTS AND NOT DEBETABLE, LEAVE YOUR THOUGHTS TO BR.

I can’t get behind the Criticism of Chris Awdry I think he is a better writer than any of TV writers from the CGI era to now. I will say that Thomas and the fat controllers engines was a boring book but James and the diesel engine is a childhood classic for me.
@cindersandashesuk5744 Жыл бұрын
He certainly isn't the worst Thomas writer out there, and certainly kept the books in spirit with his Father's work. I think it's execution of certain stories, as opposed to the stories themselves that falls a little flat from time to time.

@@cindersandashesuk5744 that’s fair. I guess I remember enjoying those stories at younger age and it’s like nostalgia really hits for me
