Fun fact: Adams and Cromford do not have names in real life, just their numbers, LSWR 448 and BR 58850 respectively. In a way, Awdry basically created OCs out of two real engines by giving them fan-made names! Edit: Yes, their _TRS_ names are based off their origins, but I was referring to how the engines themselves aren't named like Stepney or Bluebell.
@wellsworthflyer29243 жыл бұрын
So, I'm not sure where Cromford comes from, but Awdry got the name "Adam's" from the LSWR class 415 Radial Tank's designer, WIlliam Adams. It's possible that Cromford's name has a similar origin, but I don't know. You'll have to look that up.
@russellgxy29053 жыл бұрын
@@wellsworthflyer2924 Cromford is actually named for his last place of work on the Other Railway. This was the Cromford & High Peak Railway, and he was the last engine of his class to work up there Interestingly, both he and Stepney started life as commuter engines, but finished up life working with trucks

Mountain Engines is the 19th book of the Railway Series, and was first published in 1964. It was written by the series creator Wilbert Awdry, and illustrated by Mr. & Mrs. Peter Edwards. Over 57 years later, and NONE of the books four short stories were adapted into episodes of Thomas and Friends. And with no adaptations, we can't spot the differences. (Wah-wahwah-wahwahh)

I have been to The Real Bluebell Railway, and seen Stepney, Adams, Cromford and Captain Baxter in real life too. Wish the crew had had the budget to adapt them into Season 4. I think budget was the main reason as to why Stepney’s backstory was changed for TV.

Interesting.
@russellgxy29053 жыл бұрын
I actually think it might've been a crew decision. I don't remember all the details but there seems to have been some kind of rule about using Real-Life engines in the show. City of Truro didn't speak and Flying Scotsman (pre-2016 of course) only had his tenders shown. So I think considering Stepney's tied to a whole railway, they kinda wanted to avoid that Also Allcroft apparently tried suing them over Stepney? Not sure how true that is but I doubt it went far
@samuelfarris19493 жыл бұрын
It is true that the pacing of the original book feels rather lagging in the first half, taking a little much caution with introducing a new concept into the Railway Series, picking up again in the second half as it reverted to the more usual atmosphere with Stepney just happening to be involved. It might have worked better as an overall book if the first story was set around Terrier locomotives like Stepney working on one of the little-explored parts of Sodor, and being introduced to Stepney through members of his old family, introducing us in the classic Railway Series style to the story of the Brighton Terrier locomotives and the preservation of the Bluebell Railway. Regards, Samuel Farris.

Here's a difference you missed while comparing the differences between Stepney's Special (RWS) and Thomas and Stepney. In Stepney's Special (RWS): After Thomas passed Stepney and Duck and the alarm went off, Duck had only one line of dialogue "Hello! I wonder what’s up". But in Thomas and Stepney (TVS): Duck didn't say anything at all. Even when the alarm went off he didn't say "Hello! I wonder what’s up".

Duck in the classic series has a weird habit of having side roles in episodes but not speaking at all: thomas and stepney, the runaway, thomas and the missing Christmas tree, spotless record, put upon percy, thomas and the special letter and snow engine heck he doesn't have a single line of dialogue in season 7 then he disappeared as we all know besides randomly appearing in the navigation song and season 12 then truly returning in season 17 then the show eventually ended Duck has had a weird history

Apparently the Reverend Awdry stated that he did not want to have engines outside of Sodor to be shown with faces as he felt it would add a sense of charm to his primary setting that distinguished it from its juxtaposition with real-life geography; his rule was that unless it was required for conservation scenes or a juxtaposition moment (namely the second and fourth illustrations in 'Bluebells of England'), engines were not shown with faces on the mainland. If one thinks that's passive discrimination, then of course you may note that Awdry never openly determines Bluebell and Promise to be female, which likely indicates that he was uncertain at the back of his mind that girls would be interested in steam engines in the same way boys were, and shied away from introducing female steam engine characters in his stories thus. Regards, Samuel Farris.
