Everything about Ledian has always made me so sad, I love it's design and the base concept of being a PUNCHING bug, despite it being barely able to punch at all. Exactly how I feel too! Especially with Ariados. IRL, I hate bugs of any- and every- kind. But in-game? Ariados looks so cool. Gen 6 did Beedrill good (barely) so not much to say on that lean, mean, stinging machine. That said... Poison Types. ... oh boy. My favorite type yet whenever I see a primary Poison type out there to catch (like Grimer and Ekans), I catch it with hopes to use it only to look up move sets to just sigh in disappointment and box them. Why do they learn so many special based poison type moves? It just doesn't seem fair.

For one thing, I had NO IDEA power trick could be baton passed, that's the most outrageously creative thing I've ever seen. I'd like to see a couple Poison Types like Ekans/Arbok. Or Grimer. They have decent-to-good Physical attack, yet they learn mostly special based poison moves? ... why? And the learnset via TM are either meager with Poison types or are near-impossible to grab until late game. Kinda makes them useless for anything else unless you're willing to sacrifice a great deal of time or use them purely as gimmick Pokémon. I'm more casual so I just sigh in disappointment and box them. It just seems/feels like it's intentional. To make you, the player, use whatever Pokémon GameFreak thinks you should be using. 4:19 I think one thing to keep in mind is that, especially before the physical/special split, not every Pokémon has to be running stab. There’s something to be said for Pokémon that focus on wider coverage rather than using any stab, and it adds a lot of diversity that otherwise wouldn’t be there if every Pokémon tried to align it’s offense with it’s type. Gengar is one of the best Pokémon in Gen 3 and it doesn’t really use stab since it’s types are both physical and it’s stats aren’t, but it has plenty of excellent special type moves. You mentioned Ledian’s low attack as negative because its the stat it uses for both it’s stabs, then immediately followed with “not that it matters” because it doesn’t learn stab to gen 4, when I think the point is that yea it doesn’t matter. It’s not designed to use stab in the first place. It’s (theoretically) probably designed to be able to make better use of the elemental punches, given how much punching ties into it’s design (and why it later gets Iron Fist). Those were all special moves pre phys/spec split, so it got a bit more power out of those coverage moves and could fill out some offensive holes you may have on your team early game. That’s probably why the gen it first gets stab is the same gen the split was introduced and it became more standard for every Pokémon to have stab. Now of course, in the case of Ledian, it’s special attack is still also too low for that to actually really matter, and it means using your TMs for those punches on Ledian instead of a better Pokémon, and it still has problems with it’s typing defensively. Obviously Ledian is a badly designed Pokémon, not arguing that at all. But I do think it’s a decent example of the different design philosophies that come into play before the phys/spec split, and how some Pokémon don’t need to be designed with stab in mind. It may be something worth considering in future videos when fixing Pokémon for the first 3 gens (obviously since this one is gen 4 it doesn’t matter anyways)
@hi-i-am-atan Жыл бұрын
the big problem with this sorta philosophy is that it's really more theoretical than something that works out in practice sure, you have the occasional standout that complete succeeds without stab because its base offensive stat and coverage is just that good ... but, like, good stats and coverage _aren't_ actually mutually exclusive with a good stab move, even in early gens. hell, pokemon like rhydon get strong coverage by _having_ stab moves, because rock + ground are just that great of an offensive pairing. mons like starmie, meanwhile, have the solid pair of water and psychic bolstered by access to surf and ... psychic, yet _also_ get complete access to _boltbeam._ and nothing really needs to be said about the strength of normal type privilege in the early gens, considering gen 1 ou says all that needs to be said and stab really is such a huge difference. sure, a thunderbolt from gengar _hurts_ ... a little bit less than one coming from an electric type packing 87 special attack. it's scarier than starmie's thunderbolt, but its ice punch is about equivalent to the star's ice beam and it can't outdo either of its stabs without outright _blowing itself up._ sure, this all doesn't stop gengar from being an amazing pokemon, but that's the thing: gengar is an _amazing pokemon,_ so not getting to leverage stab ( + its stab types ultimately being a bit mediocre anyway ) is just a single mark against its fantastic list of strengths. less pushed pokemon don't exactly get to say the same and like, sure, there's nothing _wrong_ per se with the philosophy of overwhelming specialization vs. adaptive versatility, because it's a very real design ethos. it's just very much not one gamefreak used. sure, there's signs that they flirted with the idea in places ( normal type privilege in and of itself stems from it ), but ultimately system mechanics like the type chart and actual pokemon design make it plainly obvious that they had no real commitment to it. the proliferation of stab moves wasn't something that came about because of the physical-special split; rather, both stem from the same place of gamefreak gaining a better understanding of the systems they created back from the very beginning of the series, and making efforts to better utilize that understanding going forward
@autumnwolverton4154 Жыл бұрын
This is my favorite video of yours yet! The storytelling with the quirky personalities and backstories of each team member is something I always love when FlygonHG does it, and you pulled it off perfectly! I was vaguely aware that Baton Pass could be used for things other than stat boosts, but I never would've considered Mind Reader or Power Trick! And Power Trick in particular is such a fun option; focusing purely on defensive stats doesn't usually make for particularly good team members, especially outside of competitive play, but you found a way to completely transform their playstyle! Incredible! It's not really a strategy that anyone can use in the base games, either; Gligar and Meditite can technically learn both Power Trick and Baton Pass, but only with the help of egg moves, except for Meditite in Gen IX where Baton Pass is a TM move. Maybe I'll have to play through Violet again to try the strategy out myself! The first thing I thought of when I saw the video topic was the Ledian Crest in Pokemon Rejuvenation, which takes a very different approach to fixing Ledian's shortcomings. As long as Ledian is holding the Crest, all its punching moves hit four times per turn, effectively quadrupling its damage output with those moves. It's got four arms, after all, so why not punch with all four of them? Moves like the elemental punches can potentially trigger their additional effects on either of the first two hits, so there's a better chance to get a lucky burn or freeze off to turn the tide of battle. And, hilariously, Comet Punch's multi-hit-ness stacks with the Crest, meaning it can potentially hit up to 20 times in a single turn! Rejuvenation's approach here - effectively taking Ledian's abysmal Attack and writing a big "x4" next to it - is probably the "stronger" option, and works better in a game like Rejuvenation, with a much higher difficulty curve than any canon game and all 890 Pokemon from Gens I-VIII available as potential competition. But honestly, your unconventional Baton Pass approach is probably even more fun! Being able to completely alter the playstyle not just of Ledian itself, but its entire team, is just such a phenomenal concept that really gets my teambuilding brain firing on all cylinders! You narrowed it down quite a bit for your next video topic, huh? I'm guessing it's either Dusknoir, who's famous for becoming worse than its own pre-evolution the moment the Eviolite came onto the scene, or Lickilicky, whose stats are just aggressively mediocre even after evolving. And as for requests, I'm still holding out for Lumineon, whose design I love, and who just really, desperately needs a reason to exist gameplay-wise.

Yup, the baton pass power trick is an excellent idea. That gives a very interesting change of game flow in competitive. That could have a niche even in the Uber tier or something like Cresselia. I love that Technician idea. Ledian learns a ton of low-power moves, so even with that pitiful stats, it could do something now. Well, definitely not as much as Heracross, which could be caught relatively early in the game, but I suppose a lot of people who started their adventure wouldn't even know how to get Heracross. Also, good choice of moves. My only complaint about them could be maybe a bit too much focus on technician build. Swarm is not a good ability, but I would still give something, like Bug Buzz a bit earlier. Overall, a very good list of changes. I'm impressed. I like how smooth its transition from offensive to supportive pokemon it went through the game.

Yeah definitely one of my favorite HIWF runs due to how Ledian’s changes affected your ability to make other Pokémon more usable. Baton Pass, Mind Reader, Power Trick… very fun tools to use in a playthrough!

The "unsalvageable gen 2 Pokemon" is usually considered to be Sunflora. The only thing Ledian needs is rotating it's stats. Make it's physical attack it's special defense, make it's special attack it's physical attack, and it's special defense it's special attack.

honestly this might be some of my favourite pokemon content to date, underpowered nigh useless mons getting the attention they deserve, taking into account character rather than blind buffs to stats, is so fun :) i’m very excited for future content from this channel !!

I can’t thank you enough for showing Ledian the love and care that they deserved! Edit: On a different note, I love how you gave the entire team their own intro cards and stories. I would love to see this in future episodes, but if this doesn’t happen, I’m at least happy that it was in a video about a Pokémon that was redesigned to support other Pokémon!

X has to be the best party member hands down. Just the image of someone pointing at you and their pet crab starts BARRELING towards you sideways at mach 2, snipping its pincers with undeniably murderous intent is hilarious.

Focus Energy + Comet Punch seems like a neat combo for Ledyba, but yeah Sonic Boom is pretty strong early game.

I love the extra effort you put into these runs to tell a story, but this one takes the cake with the wacky crack team of offbeat heroes. Truly an beautiful embodiment of Karen's philosophy: "Strong pokemon, weak pokemon, these are but the foolish perceptions of people. Truly great trainers should try to win with their favorites." Your dedication to giving these underdogs a chance to shine is truly impeccable.

What a fun Pokémon fix video. I love the story of each team member as misfit superheroes. I had a healthy amount of stupid grins. 🤩 This is your best video so far. Also, my best guess on the next fix is a twofer so I have a double chance to be wrong: Lickilicky or Gallade.

While I understand not giving it all the elemental punches, I feel like its Pulseman inspiration justifies Thunder Punch.

I love this series. It’s always interesting to see how wildly a Pokémon’s usability can swing with what seem like such minor tweaks. It’s also great that the goal is always to find a reason to use the mon, whatever that niche may be, rather than just always making a powerhouse. Not that the occasional powerhouse (luxray) isn’t fun too. Mind reader-baton pass is just soo satisfying to watch.

Considering that I requested Ledian before. I'm really happy with the amount of effort you put into this entire video. The little superhero deserved it.

Just found your channel today and these videos are great to put on the side while I'm hunting. This one especially was really good as it was amazing seeing how you took all these gimmicky strategies and moves and turned them into viable strategies that make up for your team's weaknesses. As for the next video, I'm guessing it's going to be Murkrow as that's a Pokemon that's pretty much never talked about and did receive a Gen 4 evolution that makes it viable yet outclassed by most other birds. I'll have to wait and see though, so I'm looking forward to the next one!

Absolutely loved this channel after discovering it through the paras video, the way you make so many mediocre or downright bad Pokémon worth using without even changing their stats is incredible, it feels like actual improvements instead of slapping on some busted stat buffs, or at least make them fun to use, your videos fill a unique niche in the Pokémon community and a really entertaining one, can’t wait for the next video!

I know this is Ledian's video, but I was on the edge of my seat watching the Precious vs. Steelix fight. I loved the narrative direction and was rooting for her so much. I almost cried when she won. Precious vs. Steelix is now a canon event

I had no idea ledian was a special attacker. Look at those fists! Look at it's early game punch moves! You probably could've convinced me it was a fighting type physical attacker if I didn't know better X3

You know, I love this series. It's made me realize just how badly neglected Pokemon's singleplayer experience has become. Instead of Pokemon being designed around early game, midgame and lategame effectiveness (as with the Bug types you mentioned in the earlier generations), they're designed around specific sets and niches for the competitive side, and as a result most Pokemon in the later games become easily capable of steamrolling it with a little bit of prior knowledge and itemization. I know there's the argument of "oh it's a kids game" but there really is some serious power creep in the recent gens, and I do wish the complexity of the strategies used in the gyms could level up along with the immense diversity in available Pokemon and items (eg. Iono's levitating Mismagius turning into an electric-type was really cool, I wish we saw more of that type of thing).

I usually am a silent viewer on KZbin but i had to write a comment here. I already really liked your channel, especially your philosophy of sticking to the core design of a mon while fixing it. It just shows that these Pokemon could have been fixed in the canonical games as well while the idea of the Pokemon stays roughly the same. But I really enjoyed this new storytelling even more, with you giving each team member a little back story to show the idea that it is the team that is important for Ledian as it is the helper that lets its buddies shine. I just wanted to thank you for over an hour of entertainment in this video alone. I am not an active Pokemon player, after playing a few other monster tamers, the whole randomness just doesnt catch me at the moment but I still enjoy well done content about Pokemon just like your channel because it was the first game i was ever obsessed with and for that it will always have a place in my heart, especially the first 3 generations.

I like what Unbound did where they just gave him huge power and said "yeah, that's enough" no new moves or shit. Huge power ledian goes from 35 attack to 70 attack, still terrible but at least he's somewhat usable, my beloved
@ultimapower6950 Жыл бұрын
Wdym no new moves it learns victory dance. But yeah Huge Power Ledian is a pretty powerful mon in the midgame of unbound especially if you delay it’s evolution from ledyba until level 40 when it’s gets victory dance at the exact level cap of marlon thundercap. In fact I even used it back in my mono-flying playthrough of unbound insane mode where with a moveset of Acrobatics, Knock Off, Ice Punch and Victory Dance, a held Flying gem to OHKO Dusclops with a +3 acrobatics as well some help from Normal Gem Swellow to scare off Zapdos with the threat of STAB Boomburst and cause marlon to switch in Agieslash and Help Ledian Get in for free to setup by switching it in on the same turn it was able to sweep his entire team.
@Disguised_Cat Жыл бұрын
Yeah but that's it, he doesn't get like first impression or random bs, it gets its normal moves. They made him usable but not broken, you would still rather have a Scizor
@ultimapower6950 Жыл бұрын
@@Disguised_Cat you can’t get scyther until the postgame. But yeah even with the buffs it’s still outclassed by other options such as Archeops, Gliscor, Salamence and especially Gyrados.
@galvsparks6295 Жыл бұрын
Huge power doesn't work that way, it boosts the stat after EVs IVs and nature, depending on those factors, Ledian's attack stat with huge power is between 75 (0IV, EV, bad nature) and 120 (31 IVs, 252 EV, good nature). Let's say that for an average ledian for an in game playthrough (15 IVs, 100 EVs, neutral nature) it's base attack will basically be 95 which is pretty solid actually, but its still lacking in good stab moves though
@Disguised_Cat Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know So it's still very balanced.

I like the bug/fighting type for Ledian but I also think it could be a good fit for a Normal/Bug type too, and it would give it STAB on comet punch and even Return
@haidynwendlandt2479 Жыл бұрын
Personally I agree with Ledian to be Bug Fighting a bit more over Bug Normal as it’s based on Super Sentai and other tokusatsu heroes. Bug and Fighting type since Gen 1 have both been inspired by the genre
@VCV95 Жыл бұрын
Aerialate would be a really neat ability for ledian imo. Gives it the option to almost have flying stab, and increases it's power offensively while leaving it's current bug/fighting defense alone
