when they just started an impromptu version of it ... man, so cool! I love Brandon so much, he's really a genius (at least to me) when it comes to writing music, and building everything around the relatively fast rhythm - the piano progression, the vocal line - but in such a haunting way in can't deny my love is just another example for his top notch skills. simple but so effective.

Does anyone know how artists typically split the earnings on a song like this? Would they split the royalties?

Very few artists are open about how they split their royalties, and in this case, I'm sure Darren Beckett is getting a piece of the cake (otherwise he could sue Brandon Flowers). But, for example, Coldplay is a band that openly say how they split the royalties, and they go for 40% for Chris Martin and the rest of the band (3 members), get 20% each. Chris Martin explained they do it this way because he writes most of the lyrics and contributes with the base tempo+beats for the song, and the rest of the band completes the music.

From the outside it always appears as though artists are quite co-operative and it's hard to tell whether they have something for you in exchange for some royalties or whether they trust you will sign a drafted contract *after* you've used the part they've given. Especially complicated when there's an artist who collaborates with many other artists on their album ie. Kimbra on The Golden Echo.
