Many microscopes come with a 100x Oil Immersion objective. This allows you to observe specimens up to a magnification of 1000x, which is pretty much the upper limit that one can meaningfully magnify with compound light microscopes. You do have to use immersion oil, however. But how important is it? I am going to show you the differences with and without immersion oil and I am also going to show you how it's done.
