100% agree. Subconsciously the brain of the listener is making decisions on behalf of the conscious listener. A well produced, mixed and mastered track is always more appealing.

The mix itself has got to be lively first. But the polished master just makes a song sparkle with beautiful harmonics that the general public might not understand but their ears and brain picks up on it.

VERY important. Without it, there's no double-checking of the audio, no making sure of compatibility with different systems, no DDP writing, no metadata input (for TV/radio), no conversion to multiple formats for different distros (yes, some still use 44.1kHz 16bit)... There's so much more that mastering engineers do than people think, and it's not just "finishing off the sound of the track". When I got into mastering a few years ago, I realised I'd jumped into the deep end and had to invest in new software to do specific things like DDP authoring. So glad I did. tl;dr - You need a mastering engineer if you're serious. You don't if you're not serious.

@PrincipalAudio bet you get this a lot. So what do you do just make it louder? Well that's about 2% of what I do.

Complete agreement. I mixed someone's EP and played it several people once I'd finished but pre-mastering. General reaction was 'yeah, that's ok, quite like it'. Nothing more. 3 months later after mastering, without priming a couple of them, I played them the same tracks.... 'I love this'.

Brilliant! Thank you, I love watching your videos because of your honesty and bluntness. Is it possible to learn some mastering techniques for an audiobook with music in a 1:1 session? I am located in Germany.

@michael_maurus I feel that's the best way to be. There's too much dishonest paid content on youtube in the audio community. Leaves people not knowing what to trust. Anything is possible. Send an email over and we can discuss what you need. studio@audioanimals.co.uk

@christopheroconnor8842 Yes, I agree. I'm experimenting with a different recording setup and this recorded in 720p with the camera mic. Rather than rerecord it I still wanted it to go up.

What are your thoughts on AI mastering like LANDR
@AudioAnimalsStudio
@AudioAnimalsStudio 21 күн бұрын
@KunchangLeeMusic terrible. I get sent these as reference masters a lot. And the difference is huge. Allowing AI to guess how to master your song just seems mad to me. Why put all that hard work in, to fall at the final hurdle.
@Chaos-Dynamics

I’m personally totally against using AI in any creative arts. A creator has a vision and an unique way of expressing themselves. Any engineer has a different sound signature which makes it unique. Also if money is the issue then probably the song isn’t worth investing anything in it.
@AudioAnimalsStudio
@AudioAnimalsStudio 21 күн бұрын
@Chaos-Dynamics I also find most producers can achieve a better result to AI mastering using stock plugins in the box. What annoys me about AI is that it is learning from us with the goal to try and replace us.
@Chaos-Dynamics
@Chaos-Dynamics 21 күн бұрын
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I agree, that’s a big reason why Photoshop lost a lot of users. They stated that they could train their AI on creative work of their users. Even bypassing copyright infringement. It pissed a lot of creators off and made them switch to other programs. There is even a platform created called Cara which is for creative artists and they prohibited any AI generated art. If you do upload AI generated art anyway you can loose access to the platform. A very good initiative imo we should have a platform like that for musicians and music services as well.
@Chaos-Dynamics

@@AudioAnimalsStudio And by the way, any AI used in any stage of production of music should be tagged in the metadata imo
