Elections in India aren’t like others. India voted to pick its central government for the next five years throughout the spring of 2019. An eighth of the world’s entire population was eligible to vote in this election. That’s 900 million people, and more than 67 percent voted.
India runs the world’s biggest elections, and officials put in a lot of effort to make this democratic exercise is as accessible as possible. This means they make sure everyone, even in the most remote locations, is near a polling booth - even if it means bringing voting machines to them by elephant.
This Vox Borders episode looks at how India pulls off massive elections.

I spent six months working in India a while back, and during my stay, many of my Indian coworkers made legitimate complaints about political problems in India: corruption, political dynasties, and other things. And I agree, there is still a lot to root out. But there's one thing I can't shake: throughout its independent existence, India has never had a military coup. Never had a dictator take power. And quite frankly, that's better than much of the world, so kudos.

Actually, fun story: I was in India during the 2019 elections (my family and I had to go for a family emergency). I had never seen an Indian election in India before, I had always watched it on the news. But it was super cool to see and watch everything going on outside our home! It was insanely organized, right down to the last voter. If only bigger countries could adopt this model. Edit: Also, I recommend the movie _Newton_ to anybody interested in this subject. It's about officials trying to get tribal people in India to vote, even though there's only 76 of them and they live in the depths of a jungle.

Yet somehow all of these people are required to have voter ID, but Democrats think that’s too much of a chore in the US.
@siddharthmehta6220
@siddharthmehta6220 4 жыл бұрын
@@JM-mr6lv you're right, you must have a voter ID to vote in India (so only citizens can vote), no exceptions. Not just that, you can only vote in the constituency where you are registered to vote, for example, I'm a working professional in Delhi but my voter id is registered in another city (hometown) which is pretty far away. So if I want to vote I'd have to take time off work when it's election time in my state and fly back and forth on my dime, which is why a lot of working professionals don't/can't vote and hence why many rural places/towns have higher turnouts than big cities. It's not like you can just waltz your way into a booth and vote like it's nothing. Also, even with all this voter fraud is not complete uncommon. The ruling regional political party of Indian state of Bengal has given voter ids to hundreds of thousands (if not a couple million) of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh (think India's Mexico/Central America) to increase their voteshare. The ruling conservative party at the federal level has promised to deport every illegal immigrant from the country, but as you would guess the issue is as complicated as in the US. Firstly, Bangladesh has already said they won't accept any deported people without any thorough proof of them being Bangladeshi. And Secondly, India & Bangladesh enjoy very friendly relationship, so India for the larger good wouldn't want to upset Bangladesh especially with China already having an eye on all other neighbours of ours. So yeah, illegal immigration is also a hot button issue in India. American conservatives are worried about future demographic changes due to unchecked immigration, a couple of states in India have already undergone a significant demographic change due to years of unchecked Bangladeshi infiltration and one of those states is already pretty close to being a Muslim majority. I'm an out and out social liberal, but I'm against illegal immigration as well.
@elfunny1212
@elfunny1212 4 жыл бұрын
@@JM-mr6lv theyre seen as illegal and unfair because for the very poor, the IDs are not as easy as its made out to be to get. For example, there may not be a DMV in rural counties where many poor people live (and in the south a lot of black people). These people may not have reliable transportation, putting an unneeded hurdle in their ability to vote. Also a lot of states that put these laws in place couldnt provide evidence of impersonation or illegal voting either, so there was no point

That movie is inspired by the book *Broken Republic* by Arundhati Roy. In that film, in an earlier scene, the army officer, played by Pankaj Tripathi, gives his gun to the polling officer, played by Rajkumar Rao, and says, "भारी है? ये देश का भार है, और हमारे कंधे पे है।" ("Heavy right? it's the country's weight, and it's on our shoulders") Classic example of the ultra nationalist narrative which preaches that army is some sort of deity and it's incorruptible, so it's unquestionable. But in the climax, Raj Kumar Rao snatches the "country's weight" from Pankaj Tripathi's shoulders, just to register few couple of aadivasis' votes!

Well tbh EVM's are not very much reliable nowadays in India making it worse for democracy to work there are many aspects to Indian voting system like here in India the major drawback is the voting here is based on caste base politics and votes are easily being manipulated due to lack of educational awareness among the rural region man power is another aspect that plays a major role in corrupting the voting system India being a quasi federal state makes it more peculiar for the largest democracy to work properly so basically it's all hoax in reality
