Jayalalithaa withdrew its support and that support was crucial because PM needs only one vote which was withdrawn. But, India follows a legislature driven style of Government. For Example, imagine if the POTUS wasn't elected by people through the Electoral College and was instead elected by the House of Representatives (In India this is called Lok Sabha lit. House of the People). This means, in India a govt. can "fall" way more easily if a majority of Lok Sabha Members are against the ruling party. This has led to a period of instability in Indian Polity from 1989-2014 when there were 10 govts. and 7 Prime Ministers in the span of 25 years). This is because the Indian National Congress (Centre-Left) and the party associated with Independence was basically ALL POWERFUL until 1989, when other regional parties and most importantly the Bhartiya Janata Party (Centre-Right) started gaining power and so you can see the 1947-89 era as a Congress (Left Wing) era followed by a 1989-2014 transition/unstable phase and the 2014-present era as a BJP (Right Wing) era. About the Emergency, just like the Sedition Act in America, India had a black law that could make any government all powerful in times of National Emergency if declared by the President (a figurehead). Indira Gandhi was filling her govt. with Yes-Men right from the moment she gained power in 1966 and in 1975 she made the President declare emergency. This basically means that the government could detain anyone, arrest them without presenting them in a court. So basically no civil liberties and fundamental rights. Therefore this is considered the darkest period in Indian Democracy when lakhs (0.1 millions) of people (all opposition parties) and everyone from potential PM Candidates to normal people were arrested and sometimes even died mysteriously in jails.
