Tucked away in the serene waters of Dumboor Lake, deep in the northeastern state of Tripura, lies one of India’s last island villages before Bangladesh begins. 📍 Where is This Village?
Dumboor Lake, a stunning freshwater lake, is located in Gomati District, Tripura, near the Bangladesh border. The lake, spanning 41 square kilometers, is home to 48 small islands, but only a few are inhabited. One of these islands hosts this final Indian settlement before the international boundary.
🌿 The Beauty of Dumboor Lake & Its Islands
Dumboor Lake is a paradise of calm waters, floating islands, and migratory birds. It is named after Lord Shiva’s ‘Damaru’ (drum) due to its unique shape. The lake is surrounded by dense forests, tribal villages, and the confluence of the Raima and Sarma rivers, making it one of Tripura’s most scenic destinations.
The islands scattered across the lake remain largely untouched by modern development, offering a glimpse into a life that is simple, slow, and deeply connected to nature.
🏡 Life in the Last Island Village
This village, located on one of Dumboor’s remote islands, is among the least explored settlements in India. Life here is challenging yet peaceful-residents rely on fishing, small-scale farming, and forest resources for survival. With no roads or bridges connecting them to the mainland, the only way to travel is by boat.
Limited Connectivity: The village has no proper network coverage, markets, or healthcare facilities. People depend on boats to travel to nearby towns for supplies.
Traditional Lifestyle: The villagers, mostly from indigenous Tripuri tribes, live in simple bamboo houses and practice age-old customs.
Borderland Challenges: Being so close to Bangladesh, the villagers have witnessed both peaceful cultural exchanges and border tensions over the years.
🛶 How to Reach This Village?
To visit this hidden island village, one has to first travel to Gandacherra or Nutan Bazar in Tripura, then take a boat ride across Dumboor Lake. The journey through the vast waters, surrounded by floating islands and lush greenery, makes the experience truly magical.
