Ohh... There's a lot of mystical folklore surrounding the Muslim figures in the past. There's one that is less known that I learned from my friend (he went to an Islamic boarding school for highschool). According to him, some people believe that there used to be a man-like man eating creature that's immortal living in the forest. One day, an ustad (kinda like pastor) decided to end the terror by slicing the creature's limbs and putting them in different places. I forgot the details but that's the gist of it. But yes, that's one of the many local Muslim folklore

Thats how schools and islamic schools teach you in fact they dont even let you know how actually islam is spread in the archipelago really is.. Trade /as for islamic strategy (ottoman) to spread to other nations taking examples of the chinese success to influenced other kingdoms by trade later political thats how islam set foot into the lands Later by preaching or shiar islam/dakwah with the advantage of the current kingdoms freedom of religions since buddhist and hinduism coexist at the time. After convincing other state lords or nobles to convert into islam then islamization begain to spread in every kingdoms and land and forcing its influence to the nations replacing the existed hindu-buddha Introduce peacefully? Yes political trade but it spreads by sword There are thousands events thats involving of blood shed by islam to turn the nation into islamic state/kingdomship and many also fight to rejects islam The fall of majapahit (much of them move to bali and making it stronghold) The massacre of batak people in converting them into islam The toraja massacre for rejecting islamic law and convertion And the failed attempt to convert the minahasa people after refusing to pay tribute to the sultanate and refused to convert into islam later lost the war and thus making the minahasa tribes to united taking posses of the former conquered lands by the sultanate up until now Fact that because of the this diversity the Indonesian government agrees that the nation is not a islamic nation or by islamic sharia law Although it is muslim majority Fact that most of eastern Indonesia is Christian majority

Through the war too. I have read that Banten sultanate had launched an invasion to Hindu-wiwitan, Padajaran Kingdom in west Java. The last Padjajaran king, Siliwangi, was the grandfahter of the first Bantenese Sultan. To avoid further bloodshed between family he fled to Halimun-Salak mountain and dissapeared there. His kingdom were taken by his grandson. Thus marked the Bantenese time to rule the Sunda realm. The story is almost the same with Majapahit whose dethroned by Demak sultanate. The first Demak sultan was the son of the last Majapahit king through his Chinese muslim wife from Champa, Vietnam. After the death of the last king, the remnants of Majapahit nobility who refuse to Embrace Islam fled to Bali.

Mataram Islam Kingdom was weird. They claimed that: 1. their ancestor was saint, Syarif Maulana Malik Ibrahim or Sunan Gresik; 2. their other ancestor was survivor from Majapahit; 3. their other ancestor was "bidadari"/kinnari/heavenly maid, Nawangwulan; 4. the founder of the family married the mystical Queen of the South Sea, Ratu Kidul. Since in the Islamic era you could no longer claimed as the manifestation of the gods (devaraja), they incorporated local belied to legitimize their sovereignty.

Traditionally Islamic Mataram Kingdom first king is Panembahan Senopati, adopted son of Sultan Hadiwijaya of Pajang (Jaka Tingkir). But to legitimate their rule in Java they use spiritual one with Panembahan Senopati spiritual wife is Nyi Rara Kidul (Ruler of South Sea), to strengthen Islamic influences by adopting title of Sultan from Ottoman like Prabu Hanyakrakusuma (Known as Sultan Agung), and by lineage by marriage of Panembahan Hanyakrawati with daughter of Bondan Kejawen (one of last Majapahit noble lineage)

@@exanbsll "It started with a cunning Indian guy. This is going to be quite a long story, so please bear with me. It started with an Indian guy that went by localized name of Marah Silu. He saw good business opportunity in the northern tip of Sumatra. In 13th century, sailors and merchants from West Asia and Egypt that sailed to China needed a port to wait for trade winds in busy Malacca strait. He traveled from Gujarat and setup his entrepot in Pasai, far north of Sumatra. He called his port Samudra, means ocean in his own language He made good business there, mainly because he was a muslim and therefore gained the trust of the mainly muslim traders. He then proclaimed himself as King of Samudera Pasai, the first Islamic Kingdom in Sumatra. Back then, to be a legitimate king you need to claim some supernatural origin, just like the king of Hindu kingdoms in Java claimed that their ancestor were born from the seed of Shiva or Vishnu. Being muslim, obviously he can not claim divine ancestry. However, being Gujarati he knows that he came from the place where Alexander the Great's conquest ended. Where he came from, every Tom, Dick, and Harry claimed as descendant of the great conqueror. So there. We had Marah Silu a.k.a Sultan Malikussaleh, the first sultan of Samudra Pasai, descendant of Alexander the Great. A great king he became, and Samudra Pasai was recorded as one of the greatest kingdom of Sumatra, from where the island herself got her name. Fast forward to 15th century. Samudra Pasai was declining, but Malacca on the peninsula, the other side of the strait, was rising. The kings of Malacca copied the supernatural origin of Samudra's kings. So now, they also, are descendant of Alexander the Great despite never have stepped their foot in Gujarat. This tradition continues. All the kings of Aceh and Melayu, despite being Malay, claimed as descendant of Alexander the Great. The mountain people of Minangkabau, deep in the hinterland of Sumatra was also in the process of creating Pagarruyung, their mythical Kingdom. This people does not have their own great kingdom. But, they just learned that carrying a long letter from a supossedly great king of Pagarruyung smoothen their travel experience a lot. So they invented their great kingdom and a king need an origin story. They need this story, too. They learned the story of Alexander from the Acehs coming from west coast and the Malaccan coming from the east coast. The rest is history, or as the Minangkabau called it, Tambo. Source: various, mostly from being Minang myself and obsessed with logical explanation of our silly origin stories."

so-called "peaceful"ness of indons is merely a facade. this country is barely functioning, the reason why we're not balkanized is because we're just too lazy or find strange comfort in our dysfunctional country. if you actually know the discourse between each group everyday, everyone secretly resent each other, there's just too many of us to have a unifying voice to make an impactful revolution, but for those who care they engage with conflicts daily.

I heard one from my tribe (Sasak) recently. The interesting thing is that there's different versions of it, and it's only one of them that has a muslim figure in it, while the rest seems to be more like a Hindu story. So it might be that these stories are altered versions of an older one derived from the Hindu faith. In Sasak legend, it's the Legend of Mt. Rinjani.

there's a story, that some Walis, or we call here as Walisongo spreads Islam through cultures like wayang or shadow puppets, gamelan or instruments, and dance. They also didn't prohibit old customs like offerings to the Hindu gods, but modify it that the offerings which is mostly food to be eaten together , and the mantras that were spelled during the ritual for the Hindu gods, to be replaced by praying to Allah and praise to Prophet Muhammad, we call it Syukuran.

@@johnthiam2446 This is false most Malays have not forgone their tradition. You might be confusing the term Malay ethnicity (who are extremely supportive of Islam and Malay culture) vs Malay race (which about 20% of the total Malaysian population are made off due to cultural assimilation) about half a million of these Malays are Arabs, another group that are considered Malays are “malaynised aboriginals” who have a different culture thus syncretism the two. Those who are non Malay ethnically deem certain cultural practises from Malays either haram or non-acceptable to their cultural syncretism. For example: KDM Muslims who are often Shaefi-Sufi are extremely against FGM which is practised by Kelatanese Malay (Shaefi-Whabbi Muslim) as culture procedure and justified by religion. We practiced a Monotheistic religion before the prophet Muhammad called waaqism and immediately accepted the final prophet Muhammad peace be upon him even before the prophet migrated to medina, before many of the prophet's closest tribesmen converted. There is a mosque in northern Somalia with Jerusalem and makkah as its prayer direction, the first Muslim prayer direction was towards Jerusalem, before it was changed to mecca. This was very early on the prophet hood of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him . The mosque was built by the first Muslim migrants to abbysinia, the companions of the prophet during the first hijra.

To understand that our life carries meaning in our daily actions and consequences, now, later in life, or in the hereafter. Toward the eventual demise of our life, we should strive to live in harmony and peace. That was the teachings of our prophet Mohammed PBUH. For those who debate whether Islam was spread by the sword or not, please understand that most conflicts are based on politics, wealth, prosperitym natural resources or land, while nationalism and religion are generally used as tools to legitimize or justify these war, invasion, or any kind of conflicts. Both Islam and Christianity benefited from war and conquest, this was a normal and commonplace thing in the past, even normal interactions between two countries were generally not free from the sword. As for Southeast Asia, conflicts rarely occur in this region because natural resources and food are abundant, even Austronesians avoided inhabit the islands that were already inhabited by Melanesians, the earlier ethnic group in SEA and Australia, so lack of conflict can facilitate spread of Islam, trade and commerce become main facilitator for spread of islam.

I agree with most of what you said for example in the early Islamic caliphate, which was led by the prophets companions and early Muslims were not actually for the sole purpose of spreading the religion of Islam , but the religion spread as a result of winning thoes wars that were caused because of a long-standing, political and economic tension that stretched back even before the emergence of the religion of Islam for example the rashidian caliphate wars against the romans and Persians (which lead to the fall of the Persian empire and the spread of Islam outside Arabia,), were mainly out of political and economic reasons especially the economic since it’s linked to the silk Road , both romans and persians had detrimental effect on the trade of mecca which flourished after the shutdown of the North Silkroad, because of the tension between the Romans and Persian in the area (which allowed Arabs to open the Southern silk Road) Both romans and pesians supported different parties to control the silk road trade in arabia yemen(supported by the persians) and Abyssinia( supported by romans) the Yemenis for example were very brutal, they famously commited a ganocide in the city of najran against arab christians who allowed trade with the Romans( representing the Persians interests,) and the Abyssinians tried to attack the city of mecca to drive away their influence on other arab cites in arabia so the political background was very very intense even before the emergence of islam , and it wouldn’t come as a surprise that once the Arabs got united because of islam they would not accept the trade to be interfered in or not being able to trade the way they like it, so this led to wars which consequences were naturally the spread of Islam outside Arabia this is true about the first Islamic caliphate which was led by the prophet companions they didn’t go into wars for no real purpose and their position is very important to me, at least as a Muslim because they are supposed to be the people who understood Islam in its true form since they learned from the prophet himself I don’t know much about the later Islamic empires and the reasons of wars that lead to the spread of Islam Consequently, but it’s not important to me because they’re just regular people they don’t affect the core of the religion itself or its values , it would have been detrimental if it came from the prophet companions, but it didn’t .

Just a minor correction The prophet companions actions definitely means alot but they’re humans after all so their understanding of religion have the possibility of flaw as well as correctness , so we can always discuss and agree or disagree with what they did after the prophet passing It’s important to note that for muslims The companions are not the main source where we take teachings of islam from , because they have the possibility of imperfection always that’s not the same with the main sources ( the quran and the prophet)

Indonesia became the largest Muslim country through a complex and gradual historical process involving trade, cultural exchange, and local adaptation of Islam over several centuries. Here's a breakdown of key factors: 1. Trade and Early Islamic Influence (7th-13th Century) Arab and Indian Muslim traders began visiting Southeast Asia, including the Indonesian archipelago, around the 7th century. These traders introduced Islam, mainly along coastal trading centers like Aceh in northern Sumatra. Islam spread through peaceful interactions, with Muslim merchants establishing communities and blending Islamic practices with local traditions. Gujarat and Persian influences also played a role, as traders from these regions were instrumental in spreading Islam across the region. 2. The Rise of Islamic Sultanates (13th-16th Century) In the 13th century, Samudra Pasai in northern Sumatra became the first Islamic kingdom in Indonesia. This kingdom prospered through its role in international trade. Islam began to spread more rapidly, especially as more rulers converted, seeing the advantages of being part of a broader Islamic trading network. Major Islamic sultanates emerged in Java (Demak, Mataram), Sumatra (Aceh), and Sulawesi, among other islands. These sultanates helped Islam penetrate deeper into society and replace Hindu-Buddhist influences. 3. Syncretism and Local Adaptation Islam in Indonesia often blended with local beliefs, such as animism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. This syncretic form of Islam made it more appealing to the indigenous population. The Wali Songo (Nine Saints) played a significant role in Java, promoting a version of Islam that incorporated local customs and spiritual practices, making it easier for local people to embrace the new religion. 4. Colonial Era and the Spread of Islam (16th-20th Century) Despite European colonization by the Portuguese and Dutch, Islam continued to spread during the colonial period. The Dutch attempted to limit the influence of Islamic leaders, but Islam became a rallying point for anti-colonial resistance. Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and ulama (religious scholars) helped maintain and spread Islamic teachings, further solidifying the religion’s hold on the population. 5. Post-Independence and Modern Influence After gaining independence in 1945, Indonesia maintained its status as a secular state, but Islam remained the dominant religion, with approximately 87% of its population identifying as Muslim today. Islam in Indonesia has remained largely moderate, with a strong emphasis on tolerance and pluralism, though there have been rising currents of conservative and fundamentalist movements in recent decades. In summary, the spread of Islam in Indonesia was a gradual process facilitated by trade, peaceful proselytization, the influence of Islamic sultanates, and the religion's adaptability to local cultures.

To understand that our life carries meaning in our daily actions and consequences, now, later in life, or in the hereafter. It's good that you didn't just repeat the cliche and incorrect theory that Indonesia was Islamized by Arabs, Indians, or Gujaratis. We've known for a long time that the most significant influence in the Islamization of Southeast Asia was China. This has been significantly downplayed by both Indonesian and Western historians. Islam arrived from the North, not the West. One thing you left out was the influence of Dutch. Because the Portuguese had the goal of spreading Catholicism (while the Dutch didn't have the goal of proselytising) this enabled the Dutch to undercut the Portuguese and make alliances with Muslim Sultanates. This enabled the spread of Islam in Sulawesi for example (The Sultanate of Gowa was established in 1605, before that the pagan leader was going to convert to Catholicism). And also East Java (Blambangan) and Lombok were under Balinese/Hindu influence for hundreds of years until the Dutch assisted.

First Islam community indeed came from arab, persian, indian muslim that trade along the coast and established community there. There was even a letter wrote by Srivijaya ruler in 8th century for Caliph at the time to send teacher of Islam . I doubt on how big influence of an individual eunuch could make for a large imperial like China even though he also a muslim, but indeed he have a part for sure. All of that theory of course mixed each other and its become factor that make Islam possible to spread in Indonesia.

In exchange, the Muslim granted religious freedom by the King. Indeed, the syncretic nature of Indonesia's Islam can be reflected by the names and naming convention of the people, particularly the Javanese. Around the world, Muslims have adopted names of Arab origins (Muhammad, Abdul Rahman, Hasan, etc) and naming convention (given name + father's name) as part of Islamization, be it the Muslims in India, in Indonesia's neighbour Malaysia, or the ethnic Malays on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. But most Javanese (who form the majority of Indonesia's population) continue to use local names and naming convention (sometimes no last name or surnames). Names like Sukarno, Suharto, Joko Widodo, and Prabowo (yeah, I just listed a few Indonesian presidents) are clearly non-Arab names, but Javanese.

Islam does not reject local names as long as they have good meaning

Very similar to us Central Asians. We get a fair share of Mogameds and Fatimas, but also tradition Turkic or Iranian-inspired(due to historically parallel developments) names like Timur, Aygül, Tolui, Rowshan, Shahzoda.

@@irbis_rosh I think all non Arab Muslim people have their fair share of native names along with the Arabic ones.

According to Suma Oriental Portuguese dated 1511 the Arab, Turk, Persian, China, Bengal the Moor merchants took the northern coastal of Java by cunning and established an Islamic kingdom in northern Java, they eradicated many Javanese locals and brought their own kind to the northern coastal of Java. This knowledge is from Javanese Buddhists and the Tome Pires the writer of Suma Oriental makes a note on that history. Meanwhile by the time Tome Pires in Java he witnessed the Moors kingdom northern Java fought the inlander Javanese Buddhist kingdom Majapahit Daha the Maha Raja which is now located in Kediri province that was backed by Malacca Sultanate. It's never by peace like Indonesians have always mentioned.

Hi excellent video -reminds me of how Islam expanded into Western Nigeria (Yorubaland) through trade with the already Islamized Malians. I hope you can do a video on this (and Islamization of Western Africa by extension) one day.

language is also a factor for these conversions.. classical Arabic , Malay and Java have rhymes when they speak in that day.. progressing towards literature and arts are in the interest of nusantara people at that time.
