I have had insomnia for 7 1/2 years since I suffered a serious TBI. I take a slow release 3 mg of Melatonin and even with that I often get only 3 to 4 hours of sleep. Such little sleep impacts my ability to walk, see and speak. As you know, it is common for TBI sufferers to experience either lack of sleep, or too much sleep. I do not eat rice, pasta, potatoes, sugar, processed foods, alcohol, sodas or any stimulates. I eat a nutrient dense vegan diet and I make everything myself. I have limited taste, smell and absolutely no Hunger so eating is a chore, when I remember to eat I only eat to keep my body healthy. My research has shown that Vitamin D can often cause insomnia so I take a high dose of Vit. D with K2 and my levels have gone from 13.1 to 13.3. I do not suffer from stress, bloating or any of the other symptoms you mentioned but I do not have a thyroid and take Levothyroxine. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you and God Bless.

I am sorry to hear this and thank you for sharing your story. I, unfortunately, can't give personalized advice to anyone who isn't my client because I don't know your entire health history. But I do have a few thoughts/ comments: I was vegetarian for 12 years and then vegan for 3 years and just 2 years ago I added animal protein back into my diet. It has been life-changing. I have seen how depleted of certain vitamins and minerals my system was because of the lack of animal protein. Also, if high doses of vitamin D help you sleep, I would investigate why vitamin D is low: are you getting enough sun? Is your body fighting inflammation and that is why the vitamin D is used up? Is it because you are not getting vitamin A (retinol, not beta carotene) in your diet (eggs and salmon would be a good source). Omega 3s is something that comes to mind as well. And if you don't eat much or regularly I would look into mineral deficiencies and blood sugar stability. Is your blood sugar dropping too low because times in between meals are too big or irregular? Are you seeing a practitioner to help with the repercussions of the TBI? Like an osteopath for example? Sorry that I can't go into too much detail, but these are some thoughts.

@@sleeplikeaboss Thank you dear lady for all this wonderful input. It provides a route into area that I can look into. I do take Omega 3s supplements, a very pure form of it and B12 once a week. Sadly, after the accident that caused the TBI, I have extreme pain in my gut when I eat animal products. My body and my face were rebuilt with titanium so eating was not possible for some time and I suppose my system stopped producing enzymes that break down animal protein. I truly am grateful to you for the valuable information that you provided and will ask my doctor to do more labs. Oddly, I have really elevated B12 which makes no sense. I guess I am a jigsaw puzzle to everyone who looks at my blood work. I am so grateful to be alive that all of this take backseat.

Hi, have you been able to see a physical neuro rehabilitation specialist in your country? I'm a uk neuro rehab and we see patients in your situation. The medics may have medication options to help incr sleep. And review other impacts. I'd also say after rbi & Major reconstruction a lot of people have stress you "stored" into nervous system and body. The body keeps score book/videos is a place to start or any somatic work to release the traumatic experiences, plus polyvagal vagsl activation, safety meditations can be helpful in many. Glad you have slow release melatonin, some find patches provide more genuine slow release. Vit d = fat soluble so have with fat and maybe low if you're fat digesting enzymes are low? Take in oil format or oil drops on meal with some fat, even full fat milk or avocado works. Whereas B12 is water soluble and you pee excess out in urine. Note if you had blood done just after taking b12 tablet it can impact results.

Yes, it potentially can. Cortisol - our awake hormone - is also an anti-inflammatory agent and if released in larger amounts at night to fight the inflammation this can lead to sleep issues.
