In 1958 Momofuku Ando developed a new food with the goal to help end hunger in Japan. You might be surprised to hear that that food was instant ramen. But every day, an estimated 290 million people eat instant noodles. Instant ramen and Cup Noodles have become a staple of supermarkets around the world. And over 100 billion servings of instant noodles are consumed every year. So, how did a 48-year-old businessman who knew almost nothing about making noodles start a multibillion-dollar industry?

I live in Central Vietnam where floods and typhoons used to be very frequent sights. Instant noodles were considered a major emergency ration for regions isolated by high water since they can be eaten raw or with warm water when rice becomes difficult to store and cook due to electricity and gas shortages. Even when life has been good and I hardly eat noodles anymore these days I will forever be grateful to Mr. Ando for this wondrous invention.

After rent and utilities I was still left with like $20 in my bank account because my job didnt pay much at the time. Ramen was a great way to get cheap food. I have never smoked, drank alcohol, played the lottery and didn't even eat out much. I was poor because my job didnt pay much. Like I said now I'm way better off but for many many people it's not a choice or a fault to be poor, it just happens and is a part of life for people who don't have the privilege or help otherwise. My teenager taught me how to up my ramen game. Now i add veggies or boiled eggs and sometimes leftover chicken but my favorite is adding a small spoonful of peanut butter which gives it a wonderful flavor. Obviously i don't add all those things at once it just depends on what's leftover in the fridge 🙂 I just wish the sodium wasn't so high in the flavor packet. Using half the sodium packet is less salty but also less flavor. I'd like the best of both worlds, all the flavor and half the salt.

Fun fact: Actually Japan had been facing poverty/hunger issues way before WW2, so a lot of industrial food inventions were made by ordinary people/scientists during the 1910s to 1930s. Many of these products are still used and loved today. Examples are Yakult (created due to rise in intestinal illnesses from economic downturn in 1920s) and furikake (due to calcium deficits in Japanese population).

A little story about the Cup Noodle the video didn't mention: in 1972, the Asama-Sansō incident (a hostage crisis/police stakeout) happened in the mountains and it was widely broadcast around Japan with very high viewership. Because all the food froze quickly when they are taken up to the mountains, the cops relied on Cup Noodles which can be eaten with boiling water from kettles, which popularised the product.

Thanks for introducing the story to English speaking world. What wasn’t mentioned in the video: Mr. Ando 安藤さん was originally from Taiwan named Baifu Wu 吳百福, born during Japanese colonization. He moved to Japan in his early 20s. After World War II, he changed his last name to Ando and then regained Japanese nationality. Ando was his third wife’s last name. It was not widely known but controversial whether Mr. Ando was really the inventor of instant noodles. Two other Taiwanese origins, acquaintances of Mr. Ando’s, claimed they were the inventors. Every one of them obtained patents about the same time. Apparently Mr. Ando was the smart one who successfully marketing it.

I watched a Japanese tv drama on him. He lived an amazing life. So many ups and downs. Great man. Also, I hope others also watch the drama. It's through his wife's perspective. But such an inspirational story.

I had no idea they were invented in 1958. It was in 1960 while we were living in Japan that we started eating that ramen. We had the two part Japanese ceramic soup bowls (bowl and lid). We'd break up the ramen a bit to fit in the bowl, then pour hot water and cover for 3 minutes. Still a favorite brand I get at the Tokyo Central Market in SoCal

You can certainly boujee this up! With a friend of mine who had almost nothing and had just moved into her place, using what she had around I whipped us up some ramen, spiced up the broth some more, added chicken, boiled some eggs and cut them in half, and added in some sliced scallops. Man. That meal was delicious and it brought tears to her eyes because suddenly she didn’t feel so alone and poor. Great memory! (:

Ah, good ole cup noodle and instant ramen. One of my favorite things as a kid to have. Growing up in a lower middle class Hispanic family with parents always working, they had to make every dollar count when it came to food and it was very easy to get boxes of cup noodles for very cheap. Easy little snack/meal for the boys that didn't require any cooking, just dump the water in and 3 mins in the microwave. Even after all these years, I still quite love instant noodles and enjoy them for either lunch at work or something quick to have at home

My God... as long as i remember, i already eat instant noodles as toddler, just about once or twice a week... Then after i start went to primary school, my breakfast are usually instant noodles with some rice, sometimes with egg, and i eat noodles practically 5 packs a week... In my teenage days, i eat more noodles, 2 packs at once, sometimes with rice or/and eggs... sometimes i eat noodles twice a day... it already about 10-15 packs per week.. In my college days, literally no day without at least 1 pack of noodles... sometimes just for snack and eat the noodles dry, without cooking it... i easily eat about 15-20 packs a week... in my 20s, this is the peak of my noodles consumption, since now i usually eat 3 packs in one serving, and my personal record is 5 packs, plus 2 eggs... i even try to mix the flavor, i eat 3 packs of noodles with 3 different flavors, and somehow still delicious... i eat about 20-25 packs a week... and now in my 30s, my consumption decline, because i already married in this time, and have a wife too cook me more healthy food... but still i consumed about 5 to 10 packs per week... Now i'm 37 y.o, and estimated has eat at least 20.000 packs of instant noodles... 1.5 packs per day on average... still healthy, and thanks God now there is much more interesting new brands and flavors than ever... 😁
