If you want to know how Intensive Care at Home can take the pressure off intensive care units and emergency departments, stay tuned! I’ve got news for you.
My name is Patrik Hutzel from intensivecareathome.com where we provide tailor-made solutions for long-term ventilated adults and children with tracheostomies at home and where we also provide tailor-made solutions for hospitals and intensive care units at home whilst providing quality care for long-term ventilated adults and children with tracheostomies at home, otherwise medically complex clients, adults and children at home, which includes Home BIPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure), Home CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), home tracheostomy care for adults and children that are not ventilated, Home TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition), home IV potassium infusions, home IV magnesium infusions, and IV antibiotics. We also provide port management, central line management, PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) line management as well as Hickman’s Line management, which also includes palliative care at home.
We have also sent our critical care nurses into the home for emergency department bypass services for the Western Sydney Local Area Health District, the in-touch program.
Today, I actually want to focus a little bit more on emergency departments.
Yesterday, on the 12th of July 2024, there was an article in, “The Age”, which is a Melbourne based online and print newspaper and the journalist Tony Wright published an article about, “A day - and an unexpected night - in the emergency ward,” and he describes what the busiest emergency department in Victoria looks like, which is at the Northern Hospital.
So, some takeaways from this article and I link towards the article. Thank you, Tony, for publishing the article. I think it’s very insightful, just some figures and numbers to illustrate what’s going on in an emergency department, the flow on effect into ICU and then also, how our service Intensive Care at Home can help not only intensive care units but can also help emergency department services, and also help patients and families to experience healthcare episodes at home rather than going into an already frantic emergency department which has no ICU beds but that comes in a minute when I go through the article.
So, some key takeaways from the article, apparently the Northern Health emergency department experiences 120,000 presentations per year, that’s around 330 presentations in a 24-hour period. According to the article, up to 400 presentations in a day. Apparently, it’s flooded with 93 to 126 ambulances every day.
According to the article, there are many days where there are no ICU beds and some patients in ED obviously need to be triaged to intensive care especially when they’re going through the resus area where they might need resuscitation such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), inotropes, ventilation, and so forth. They all end up in ICU if they get there. There are many days where there are no ICU beds and some patients in ICU, we can take home with Intensive Care at Home, especially long-term ventilated adults and children, but I come to that in a while in more detail.
Apparently, the Northern Health Hospital also set up a Virtual ED, a statewide free service, which gets up to 1000 presentations a day.
