Honestly I blame the Capaldi era for being as good as it was for giving me the whiplash when Chibnall took over. In Chibnall’s defense how do you continue the show after twice upon a time and the doctor falls both of which served as near perfect ends (or at least breaks) to the character (with Gallifrey back they could have let the Doctor die and revived them when the show came back in so many years; then use the off time to do spin offs to show off the rest of the DW universe; maybe make class relevant, possibly bring back Missy and finish off her arc, and so on)).

Um, why do you think Rusty went back to his home world? Where are you getting that from? In the episode Rusty goes back with the Daleks with the strong indication he plans to destroy them all- RUSTY: I must go with them. DOCTOR: Of course you must. You've unfinished work, haven't you? Rusty wants to kill daleks after seeing the Doctors hatred of them combined with its own awakening to the futility of the Dalek ideal. That's where we leave it in the episode, I'm not sure why you would think otherwise.

The issue Harbo and the rest of us have is you're right, rusty should've gone off to fight the Daleks, but in twice upon a time we find out Rusty is just barely hanging onto life in a tower on some planet.

Capaldi having grown up watching the show and legitimately loving the lore was a major highlight of his run. Both in his acting where he could tell he was channeling classic era doctors and in all the marketing he did. Watching any interview with him about doctor who is so entertaining because he acts like a fan first and THE star of the show second.

The writers and producers seem to have given PC a lot of input, for exactly those reasons, and it shows. Bill Hartnell seems to have had similar input in creating the character, if "Adventures in Space and Time" is to be believed

Up there with the line from "Last Christmas", when Clara references the movie Alien because of the face huggers, and the Doctor seems confused. Clara says "Don't you know? The horror movie, Aliens?" And he looks actively offended and says, "You made a horror movie called Aliens? Well no wonder everyone is invading you lot all the time!" That line always kills me lol

I think Rusty’s near growth and ultimate downfall was so well and realistically written. We got validation that Dalek’s are hardwired to focus on hatred and see themselves as superior (this is what Davros always intended), but we also got that if you change that wiring and remove that fact from their genetics that have the potential to choose (something we saw with the Dalek hybrid in series 3). What I like even more here is that when offered the universe, Rusty is overwhelmed and ultimately settles on the familiar, the Doctor’s hatred. It felt much more organic than when Dalek Sec pretty much immediately turned good. When exposed to a whole new perspective on life, people aren’t nearly that responsible and welcoming of change. Life naturally seeks the familiar. I don’t believe any one aspect of the Doctor was more overwhelming than the rest. He has his hatred like we all do, but he’s too old and seen too much for that to be all there is (and Rusty was beginning to see more), but the second Rusty recognized hatred he grabbed onto it and held tight. This is why its so difficult for us to cope with and change our vices and why battling addiction is an ongoing affair that requires constant support. We’re all prone to fall back into the familiar.

I think dalek sec turned good because he was made to think outside of the box, combining that with the fact he wasn't even really a dalek anymore, he probably lost all hardwiring and continued thinking outside of the box, but without any limitations

Well said. Into the Dalek is the best Dalek story of the Moffat era. It's worth noting that the battle sequence in this episode was done entirely with practical effects, everything from pyrotechnics and stunt actors to miniatures and multi-camera filming, so although it doesn't quite hold up to some other action sequences of the time it's still commendable that the production team were able to make an exciting battle sequence with such limited resources.

I loved this story and I agree! This story is the best Dalek story when I was in High School. I do like the 12th Doctor questioning himself about being a good man. I do love it when they are inside the Dalek and that is amazing and the line I do like from Rusty when he says you are a good Dalek, and I was like is that the same Dalek from Dalek?

My only problem with this episode is the whole soldier angle. In isolation, I love the unfairness I feel when Journey Blue (great name) can’t be a companion because she’s a soldier paired with Clara realizing the Doctor will hate her new boyfriend. But in the span of the series, it feels weird to have the Doctor hate soldiers so blatantly right after learning to forgive himself for being the War Doctor like two episodes ago? This episode is excellent but it feels weird to have the Doctor hate soldiers so much so soon after Day of the Doctor. It makes Twelve more complicated, not in a good way.

Agreed. The whole “Am I a good man thing?” comes a bit out of the blue but can be made to work under the circumstances. The biggest slap in the face to the character is Clara’s response - “I don’t know”. Did she forget the part 2 episodes ago where he fixed the Time War and saved his whole race? Did she not see him in the previous episode give up 900 years of (what he believed to be) his last incarnation to defend 1 village? All of this because he has a new face and left her in Glasgow for a few week. It’s horribly inconsistent. If 11 had asked her the same thing she’d have swooned.

@@MrLethalShots Tbf in that same episode she saw how different the doctor can be. She knows 11 was, at his heart, a good but manipulative man. She doesn't say 12 is a bad man, but she's known him for 2 days and it's clear she still doesn't see them as quite the same person. Is it clunky? Sure. But it tried to do something new, I enjoyed were it went, and I'm willing to suspend disbelief a bit to have fun.

But if you binge the show or consider recent events in the show, its like having emotional whiplash. Best to just add it to the list of reasons Series 7 was a mess in my opinion and let Series 8 be good. I love Series 7 but its wild.

the doctor has sorta always hated soldiers, thats never been something in question, maybe its in your face for twelve but im not shocked since hes also the "grumpy old man" during the season, like clara cares so he doesnt have to.... plus he forgave himself for doing what he had to do, not necessarily for being a soldier but also its not that he forgave himself its that he actually remembers what happened since 11 and technically 12 himself completed the loop of saving them but not remembering it

I always felt it would have been nice if he and referenced his time with UNIT here in this story. A nice little scene with Clara, after coming back out of Rusty. Clara referring to Blue's being rebuffed as companion, "Why did you do that? She had changed..." He interrupts with, "You know? I used to like some people who were soldiers. That doesn't mean I like what they did... (Sotto voce) what I did... or became." Delivered in his wonderful Scot voice.

I would like to point out that the Doctor manipulated Ross to save everyone else while having already written him off, not to advance the mission. It's not like he had any reason to think the waste tank would be any closer to where they needed to go. The difference between this and how other incarnations might deal with this situation is that there was no visible effort to save him somehow or apology (10 would definitely apologize), which might jeopardize the chances of them getting out alive. The other difference is the lack of remorse. 11 would get mad, 10 would get sad and a little mad. I think this shows that 12 lacks deep emotional attachment to the people he's saving, protecting, or losing. He seems to not really know why he is helping people at all and just does it out of inertia because that's what he does. To me, this arc of self-rediscovery and rediscovery of his moral centre is very satisfying and I love the idiot in a box speech.

there needs to be more episodes about 1 dalek apart from the fleet. it not only helps to sell them as a proper villain but it also makes victory more believable. despite the fact that they are nearly impossible to kill, all you need to do is kill one and then you can sigh with relief.

I'm still not sure how I feel about 12's hatred of soldiers. The doctor has always disliked the military and the military way of doing things sure, but they've never hated individual soldiers. 10 got on well with Ross from the Sontaran poison sky story, and the Brigadier is a long running friend

From the Doctor's point of view, post the 50th 11 had to deal with reincorporating all the bad stuff he had to do in the Time War back into his personality and memory. And where did he do it? For nearly 1000 thousand years defending Trenzalore from just about every military force in the universe whilst watching a percentage of every generation that goes by killed in the siege. I think that would be enough to make anyone a bit sick and tired of armies, soldiers and war. I feel its more than justified for 12 to have developed a strong dislike for the military.

This episode and Mummy on the Orient Express are the two episodes that feature the Doctor if he were House (MD). Brash, rude, sometimes achieving objectives by using people who are certain to die, keeping the goal or bigger picture in mind. Later on they make him more kind of like a dunce when it comes to social interactions, to the point that Clara writes out notecards for thing for him to say.

Hey! Adric's freighter was traveling through time sort of half in and out of the vortex, there was nothing to lock on to!😋 "Except for the being chained up and penetrated part." 🤣 I would have liked to have seen another companion come on board while Clara was there. Her not having him all to herself could have raised some interesting character situations and conflicts. Still though, for me the best Companion that almost was but wasn't is the lady from the God Complex. I really liked her.

I started Doctor Who with Matt Smith, he was my first Doctor, and I was completely unfamiliar with regenerations back then, so his change into 12 was quite a culture shock to me. I started watching when all of 12‘s episodes were already released, but after Matt‘s departure and seeing Deep Breathe I first didn‘t want to watch anymore. Looking back, I am SO GLAD I eventually decided to give Peter Capaldie a chance. 12 is now my absolute favorite Doctor, and Deep Breath one of my all time favorite episodes. It‘s also my go-to episode I like to watch whenever I feel like rewatching and starting anywhere in the middle, or when I‘m just in the mood for Doctor Who without rewatching the whole series. 12 is such a remarkable and brilliant Doctor. He did not deserve my doubt, and I pity all fans who stopped watching after 11.

This is without a doubt one of the greatest dalek stories of all time. For up until this point the daleks hadn't killed anyone in any of their stories and their threat level had slowly diminished over the years. but then this episode came along and fixed it. the daleks were a legit threat, they killed people with ease with no hesitation. They began to regain that level of fear they made people feel. But what truly makes this episode great is the dynamic between the doctor and rusty. the doctor is forced to examine his conscience when the dalek makes the doctor realise that he carries a burning hatred within himself for the daleks equivalent to theirs, leading to him to attempt what he thought was impossible, turn a dalek good. The way episode explores what it would be like if the daleks had morality, conscience and empathy, all the things that were removed when they were created. What if these aspects were given back to them? What if instead of seeing inferiorities and differences being wrong, they saw they beauty in the universe. An incredible Idea. when I watched this episode for the first time I thought the daleks were finally getting back to what they were in RTD's era, a legitimate threat. complex and intriguing characters instead of the one dimensional disposable aliens they seemed to be turning into over the course of Moffat's run. But of course in typical Moffat fashion, he back peddled and along came The Magicians Apprentice and The Witches Familiar which turned the daleks into an absolute joke.

This episode makes me wish they kinda reinvented the Daleks to focus in this war with humanity. Something I feel Doctor Who doesn't focus on enough is that despite constantly talking about it and a few episodes showing it, we never get a good view of Humanity spreading across the galaxies. An episode focusing on this with Humanity holding their own against the technological superior Daleks with improvised weaponry and creative thinking could do wonders for both making Daleks a genuine threat again, and focusing on this (imo) underdeveloped aspect of the show. You could even do great things with The Doctor by having them recognize the eerie similarities between this conflict and the Time War, have the Daleks worryingly upset about this (in their eyes) pest somehow becoming a genuine threat to them.

Honestly, I DON’T like the Twelfth Doctor’s sudden increased disdain for soldiers. The whole theme of soldiers throughout the season felt kind of forced. It’s not to say that he hasn’t expressed a certain reluctance with soldiers in moments previously in Nu Who (and maybe its some kind of throwback to classic who that i wouldnt be aware of) but judging it off Ten in particular (with his encounters) seem like he wouldn’t write off individuals entirely, especially if it was a chance for them to be better. The scene where’s he’s talking her down is absolutely fine. But the continued sudden strong prejudice against Danny and refusal to take this character on the grounds that she’s a soldier specifically just seem to come out of nowhere with where he is that. This is a Doctor who knows the true result of the time war. I guess it can be argued that its a different incarnation and his prejudices are rising to the surface, but I dont really like that specific explanation either. There are going to be some differences/nuances between incarnations (and I suppose there has been?) but i prefer kind of a continuation on somethings with his previous incarnations. Maybe if theyd established a newer reason for his disdain it could have worked better.

I love to see the patterns in doctor who and there are so many ways in which Clara is like Rose and a lot of them are on display in this episode and the last one. And these similarities work over their whole story arcs too, since in the end, Rose gets the doctor without the traveling and Clara gets the traveling but can't be with the doctor. Plus they're the only ones in nuwho to be with the doctor as they regenerate

This season was the first season I watched as it aired every week and so I often forget how freaking good it was! I watched seasons 1-7 on Netflix before it was removed and so I was able to rewatch those seasons over and over and those seasons also have a bit of nostalgia for me which blinds me to some of its issues. This seasons is great on its own without nostalgia and the tumblr fan girl culture that I engaged in with 1-7. Also Capaldi + Clara is the best duo

There was an episode of Lost in Space in which Will Robinson and Dr Smith were miniaturised and went inside the robot and had to avoid the robot''s self defense droids floating around inside. There are clear parallels between this Lost in Space episode and the much later Dr Who story. The Lost in Space robot was however a force for good, protecting the humans and having a relationship with Will Robinson similar with that shown in Terminator 2. The robot learns as much from the child as the child learns from the robot. The protection offered by the robot becomes personal. Why do I remember more about 1960's episodes of Dr Who and Lost in Space than I do about what we were being taught in school during the day? It would be interesting to see a modern Dr land at the crash site of the Robinson's family colony and see the Dr's reaction to the boy, Dr Zachary Smith and the robot. A meeting of the 1960's 2 legendary sci fi doctors. They both fled their responsibilities and rode off into space.

Unless I'm mistaken (which sometimes happens, lol), when the Doctor meets Danny Pink, they don't seem to get along at all. Apart from the Dotor's general dislike of soldiers, the Doctor immediately dislikes Danny (and vice-versa), right? I wonder/theorise if through his physic, etc. Time Lord abilities, the 12th Doctor might have picked up (to a degree or more) on what Danny Pink had done as a soldier, and that's why he disapproved of him so much, perhaps..? (Also, imagine if the 12th & 6th Doctors met... lol)

I do think it was a missed opportunity to have an episode focused on the possibility of a good Dalek featuring Clara but never address the fact that Clara was a good Dalek

I love moffats era but he did do generally weaker dalek stories .I still like them all to a greater or lesser degree but this one is superb. Ben Wheatley is a top tier director too. Shame he isn't valued enough by the movie going audience

Serial 9 was a miniaturization story in 1964. I'm suppressed you didn't bring it up, because doctor who did it before Fantastic voyage did. Definitely not the first ones to do that, but weird you left it out.

I loved those Doctor Who games... I think I still have them on a PC somewhere. Another favourite was the isometric game playing as the Dalek from Dalek - trying to escape the Vault. Unavailable now, unfortunately.

Well journey blues brother must of been an adric. The Tardis is a time machine right and after he detected the distress call he could have got there just after they sent it and saved both but cuz story didn't call for it. Like the story and audience called for adrics death.

Not exactly, because of paradoxes. If you go back in time to prevent something, it doesn't happen; therefore you never go back in time to prevent it in the first place.

I feel like with 10 and 11, when he did dubious shit it was because of some outlier of a circumstance reducing his empathy or grief clouding his judgement with anger. The darkness was there, but it was underneath. For 12, being a cold bastard is like breathing. His tactical use of the soldier's death (a cold and calculating move that shocked the soldier by his side, that he didn't think twice about, but he hates soldiers) here is one thing, but in Thin Ice, he just lets a child get killed in front of him, and all he does is pluck the sonic screwdriver from the kid's hands, and then let the kid die without any attempt to prevent it. I was convinced at the time it would be a fakeout, but it wasn't. 12 is just a cold bastard. Not saying that is a bad trait for a Doctor to have, but it did take me aback at first.
