Hey guys! Sadly I think this video is not getting recommended to people by KZbin and a lot of my followers said they weren’t notified when I posted it. It would be SO helpful if you share the video with a friend who you think will enjoy it or post it on a platform you’re on. I would be so grateful!! @@Kellydoesherthing I dont think it is always a bad measurement of time. It can always be that it is just not possible to finish work on time because people get to much work. Or it can also be that you just care about your job. F.e. I used to work in a group home for handicapped people. One time I was the only one on shift. And one of the inhabitants had a series of epileptic seizures. Took an hour until 911 had him on the way to the hospital and I had documented it all and informed his guardian. So then the hospital called me back 15 minutes before the night shift (1 person for 40 people instead of 8) took over to tell me everything was fine, they had given him medication and would get a transport to send him back now. So I waited for like another hour until I had to go so I wouldnt miss the last train (I really didnt want to take the night bus). That was 5 years ago. By now I think I should have waited until he was there because in the situation he was in at that moment he would probably have wanted to see someone he sees 3 or 4 times a week during daytime and not someone who he only sees a few times a month for very short moments at night.

Folke Hoffmann yes but you’re described single instances. It’s totally under stable that you might have too much work to get done here and there, or even once a week every week...but in the video, I’m describing people who consistent work exaggerated hours without there actually being an abundance of work to do. Also that was very nice of you to help this resident ❤️

@@Kellydoesherthing yeah but it is even expected in other jobs. For example in grocery stores. If they get fresh produces 1 minute before your shift is over, you are expected to get them put away even if it takes an hour. And here in Berlin that happens like 5 outta 6 times a week.

In Denmark you can pay at the pump - or you must. In some cases you don't have a choice anymore. You delay the people waiting in line, by having to go into the store and pay. Fine with me. i rarely need to go into the store for something. As a tourist in the US it is a problem if you have to punch in your zipcode, unless you have figured out an imaginary zipcode that works. Because of the zipcode issue, I often have to go into the store, even though I don't feel like it. As for working long hours, Danes are not believers in that. Whoever spends too much time at work, is not efficient. You do not get more done, just because you stay longer. Probably in the beginning, but very soon long days will exhaust you and your efficiency will drop. If you boss keeps pushing work into your lab, because she does not get it done, push it back to her with a "No Thank You". I am already up to my limit.

Dear Kelly, how is American and German Culture Changing? There is one very, very important difference between the American and German culture, you never focused your attention on. But this is one of the most important and critical differences between both cultures and could be decisive to understand the future development in both countries. The American people loves freedom and democracy at a point to be always willing to defend it at whatever cost this coult be. In Germany at the other hand the love for freedom and democracy have always been and are also today so week, that freedom and democracy are always at risk and stake in Germany. It Germany the political development to a new dictatorship as a real option and possibility - in the US it isn't. If the left or the right in the US try to reduce democracy, the voters switch to the other side - nowadays to Trump. But if Merkel - raised and educated in the eastern German dictatorship - starts to reduce democracy in Germany, the voters accept it and do not switch to the other side. The Germans simpy accept that democracy - given them as present by the american people in 1948 - is taken away from them another time. The German people - with the exception of the fight in eastern Germany in 1989 - never fought for democracy and possibly will not in the future. Michael

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As a german (and fan of the us) i watch your channel to learn more about both of our countries. In my company (2.200 labors) we converted 600 workplaces into home office driven by corona to keep social distancing. We just made the descision to stay with this after corona as chance for more digitalisation. Another important aspect in this crisis is the german concept of "Kurzarbeit" (short work?). You have to reduce your worktime (if needed to 0) but you get paid for it (up to ca. 80% of your standard income) for several weeks from the state. This is to keep your working place without running your company into ruin. Personally i am working for a forwarding company and i am a essential or importand worker, hurray :)

A lot to think about! One of the things I wondered first (hah!) was whether culturally we would all start washing our hands more because of the pandemic? One of the things you didn't mention Kelly is that, can we say, Germans are generally more trusting of their government than Americans-more trusting of what the doctors and scientists and politicians (Mutti Merkel) are talking about than their American counterparts. I think it's also safe to say that Germans don't have two different media that represent different perspectives from which they get their news and therefore, world view-and I wonder to what extent that fact has contributed to the German nation making quicker progress in the face of the virus? I would like to hope that we could learn from each other-which is one of the ways in which you vlog is really helpful. It will for sure be interesting to see how all of this settles out.

13:20 Only non-essential businesses *open to the public* (like retail, hairdessers, restaurants etc.) were closed in Germany. The rest of the companies could continue to operate. Some large companies, especially the car manufacturers, closed their factories, not because legal regulations forced them, but more because they ran out of the parts necessary for production.

Thanks for being so positive about the future, Kelly. I'd lie if I said I that I am. Judging by past events (one of the more recent ones being 9/11), people complaining how they just want to go back to their "normal" lives, and the behavior observable with the ease of restrictions, I rather doubt there will be any substantial changes in the long run--except for the people whose lives may be changed forever in a certain way due to the loss of friends/family. Once the current situation is over, the resolution to "do better" will likely be "conveniently forgotten" by many people. Man is a creature of habit, I guess. I hope I'll be proven wrong though.

15:20 min Luckily more and more people in Germany understand: When you are always the first at work in the morning and the latest in the evening your body sometime will take a terrible revenge on you. We have only one life and one health, no job in the world is it worth to end up in a burnout-clinic. In Germany we still can learn a lot from Scandinavians: When you sign a work-contract in Danmark, you are automatically member of the labour-union protecting your rights as employee. Scandinavians put a great value on a social working-climate and refuse mobbing. I worked in a Danish company in Hamburg, this time was more like a big family then a company (they ordered us free Pizza for overtime hours, we got free ice-cream in the summer at work, free soccer-stadium-tickets, on Easter Danish children brought us chocolate and candies, we got costumed Halloweenparties at work, absolutely Incredible for a company!). I also heard it from Swedish companies: Their meetings and discussions take an eternity because they do not want to leave anybody unsatisfied...

I can't remember the German term for it right now, but "Keeping up with the Joneses" exists here in Germany as well, though not as prominent anymore as it was a few decades ago: People used to try to keep up with the pace of perceived wealth accomplished by their neighbors and friends. For instance, it was very visible to me when I was a teen back in the 80ies: First a few kids (like me, who were interested in programming) had a computer, then everybody (even if only slightly interested in it) had to have one too, and preferably more expensive models. Suddenly all of my friends had computers. In the adult world of the 80ies it was similar: The cars people bought, or houses. Social status used to be very important to many people. (I live in a town with a Mercedes-Benz truck plant -- which used to sell regular Mercedes-Benz cars at a discount to its employees) At some point, Mercedes-Benz was the most driven car brand here in the area, it was really comical. IIRC, only after the discounted sales to employees stopped, people resumed buying other brands. Also, people just HAD to buy houses, even if they couldn't actually afford it. Just so their kids could brag at school, or something. That was actually one of the reasons why a school friend of mine had a more expensive computer than me: His father just HAD to buy him something he could brag at school with, as he told me much later. His father actually was a forklift driver but he bought a house and did everything so his kids had the best "bragging rights" in school. It's because in this area, there are a lot of rich families and all the kids - rich and poor - went to the same schools. Those parents, they were all from war or post-war generations, and they wanted their kids to have the life and wealth they never had. The generation(s) that followed raised their kids in the same environment they grew up in, so wealth was sustained, not significantly increased afterwards, and so nowadays, this kind of peer pressure, "Keeping up with the Joneses" is mostly gone, here in Germany.

We are at the moment required to use an einkaufswagen while shopping. I don't know if it is to keep a limited amount of customers in the store at one time or for distancing. But you probably already know what the aisles are like here. So shoppers will leave their cart in one place and walk to what they are shopping for. No more einkaufskorb for a while.

Who else gets 30 days paid vacation a year from the company ? I have next week 5 days off and in summer 4 weeks straight and remaining 5 days as backup. Not to mention the 40 overtime backup hours, that can be used as unpaid vacation or shorter work days. Guess witch country makes that possible ?
@jessicaely2521
@jessicaely2521 4 жыл бұрын
My brother does. He automatically gets 4 weeks vacation and then if he works overtime he gets an hour vacation time per hour worked over time. For example if he worked 8.5 hours overtime he had 1 day of vacation (a work day is 8.5 hours). If Florida has a typical hurricane season that he reports on (he's a reporter at a local station in Miami) he will get 5 weeks vacation. During the rare season of 2005 he got 8 weeks vacation. While he was setting up a news bureau he had 7 weeks of vacation. He gets 2 weeks as sick days. If he uses up his sick days he needs a note from the doctor saying he can't come into work. Your union jobs (factory worker, journalism, police, etc) and technology jobs generally gets a minimum of 4 weeks vacation and a minimum of a week of sick leave.

My sister-in-law technically would get a month vacation, but she usually just rolls it over to the next year. She took 8 weeks off for vacation in Chile. It took her 8 years of no vacation to do this. She prefers to keep her vacation time and use it for a 2 month excursion.

6:19 - In Germany, there is a strong incentive/plea to pay wirelessly or even use Google/Apple/Samsung Pay. Some people just recently got a wireless function on their EC and now I guess it is becoming more common - at the moment at least. Before Corona, there were also protests about the government planning to take away the cash option entirely, so it is to be seen if the wireless EC trend is here to stay.

Thanks for this very insightful video! When you mentioned grocery shopping, I thought about the people who pack the bags for the customers after they payed - would this not be a greater risk than shopping bags brought from home? I mean, do the have time to desinfect their hands after every customer, or do they touch the grocerys from one customer after another? (I just moved into a German appartement with door knobs at the front door and my first thought was 'I HAVE to exchange them!") Thank you especially for the explaining of individualism in the US vs. Germany - I never thought about this and the way it influences pandemic measures.

German public smoking: sadly, this will have no impact on German smoking habits, as masks are only required in public transportation and shops. As long as you can keep a distance of 1.5 m or more, you are not required to wear masks in Germany as of right now (and even those rules are currently being lifted step by step). This means, that - outside of public transportation areas, smokers are free to smoke as usual... and I heavily doubt, that many smokers will actually follow the rules in public transportation areas, as they did not follow the non-smoking rule in those areas before COVID! Home schooling: Simply NO. German parents have NOT become the teachers. They are NOT home schooling. The children receive tasks and sometimes even material from the teachers and are usually taught remotely. There are very good reasons, why Germany does not allow home schooling and this has not and will not change due to COVID.

I'm Sorry, but children being taught remotely for me means that they would be under control of their teacher the whole "school lessons"...that's definiely NOT happening. In case of my 8 yo daughter the teacher was so helpless and changed three times the online platform for videoconference because of security issues. Most teachers didn't even want to be given feedback about the tasks. Parents are forced to explain and supervise the "homework"...and afterwards even revise it. Many parents are completely overburdened.

There will be concerts and comedy for about 500 cars, complete with food and beverage service at the car. So drive in festivals are the future here in Germany. 😊 Due to the corona virus in some cities like Berlin there are more and more pop up bicycle lanes popping up from week to week, because less people want to use public transportation due to distancing rules. A lot of things you talked about here deserved their own videos so for that I will just comment on the dynamic of work changes. I've read how designers (be for home or businesses ) are already thinking about new ideas, one example was to make halls be one way instead of 2 ways to avoid see people face to face. Another is that in the past years there was this trend of open office spaces supposedly to collaborate better and now they talk about putting more walls, give people more personal space and avoid cubicles be too tight together. A change I would like is that businesses where people have the power to let people work from home to at least change it to let's say always Fridays at home, I read somewhere maybe come in the office in the morning go home to eat and continue working there. That kind of change will reduce the amount of contact but still, you wouldn't feel confined to one place. ps: I really enjoyed thes video, the best one yet, like other people mentioned already it looks r=this one required some work.

With all the information you presented in this video it would have been easy to miss the really great photography work that you used. I don't know if it was the exquisite quality of the camera or the variety of landmarks that you seemed to have gotten a fresh angle on, but that was some really nice work Kelly! You made Washington look inviting! I have a question for Misha though, in his opinion, which country outside of Germany, has had the most lasting impact on Germany since the end of World War two? And by impact, I mean good or bad. It might be a country like Russia that Germany keeps a strong military to be able to defend against, would be a negative impact. Or it could be Italy that has a certain impact on the German high end auto industry. Without Italian Ferrari, would Germany have developed Porsche? That was certainly a positive impact. Here in America, Germans rank high on both positive and negative side of this question. German immigrants were here when we declared our independence from Great Britain. They helped set the standards that "Made in USA" meant quality, but then we fought two world wars with Germany. So which single country impacted Germany the most since the war?

Some tourists visit only NY or Chicago or LA and say americans are like this or that. A lot of americans recognize the hustle bustle of big cities but would never ever live there stacked up on top of each other when one's preference is a four/five bedroom 2.5 baths on 2acres of land. The corona wont change the South. We will still smile at you, wave at you, ask how youre doing - how youre momma's doing, stop and help you on the highway if your car is broke down. I know yankees and Europeans consider it fake but its not. Sorry if you live around assholes we don't and if we do they are shunned until they go to a place where other a-holes live. I was in Germany in summer of '98 Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Flensburg. I really felt as if I were in America sometimes. It was the 50th anniversary of the Berlin airlift and one night after eating and drinking all day until about 10 o'clock my friend and went to pay our bill the bartender said the older couple you came in with paid for everything. I'd had a conversation about my dad being in the army during WWII and she said she was a little girl during the airlift and how scared they were about the soviets coming into west berlin. she was so emotional in thanking me for America's friendship with Germany - the memory is emotional for me as I type this. I'm using my bank card to pay a lot these days, but I do want to go back to more cash in the future. I don't think the privacy issue people might have with credit cards, etc. isn't actually that strong of an argument anymore if you think about how we behave online. but I still think it's good to have cash in circulation. with the current situation being an outlier, I think that bank runs during a financial crisis (and the realization that there's not enough actual cash) are a great reminder how flawed our system actually is with banks generating more and more money (and debt) out of nothing requiring a hard reset every once in a while (in increasingly shorter proximity to the prior crisis) ruining the livelihoods of millions just to continue the same way as before. Don't want to start an argument here about capitalism vs whatever haunts you in your dreams, but cash and the realization of its actual scarcity maybe, just maybe, help create the opportunity to improve capitalism a bit during one of the next few financial crisis.

Hello Kelly, well done✌️ i love you and the channel, it's so much work you are doing every time👏👏. I don't believe that the pandemic will change the cash is king preference in Germany. Credit cards are a good thing if you can handle it and have under control. And with depit cards you need a pin code and for that a lot of people need to touch the buttons, there is a risk too. A good working and save public transportation service is for my opinion the best thing a country can have. Cars are dirty and even the electric cars, because you need a lot of dangerous things for the battery. We will see what happens, hopefully our civilization learns something about it. As a german, I would like to add, that there HAS been a change in using reusable grocery bags. While it is still perfectly legal to use home-brought bags in normal groceries stores, it is now banned to use specific kinds of bags. Before the virus there has been an increase in using reusable bags for goods like bread, veggies and so forth, which are usually put in one-use-bags (similar to zero-waste-stores). All of these bags are now banned in Germany. You are not allowed to bring your own bags for bread to the bakery, etc. they are required to put the bread in a plastic or paper bag before handing it to the customer. This has a similar reasoning, why people are supposed to pay with plastic, as it decreases the items, which have to be exchanged between cashier and customer.

"Pay at the pump" ... well, german gas station owners make a living of selling all the stuff inside the station, especially sixpacks and snacks, they have a much higher margin on that than on the actual gas where, as far as I remember, they only make less than 1¢ per liter. So they really need you to pay inside to make a living. Some of the larger stations are really more like convenience stores, with the advantage that they are not bound to the same business hour laws. This is less of an issue nowadays, apart from Sundays, as legal opening hours have been extended from the original "07:00-18:30 Mo-Fr, 07:00-14:00 Sat (until 18:00 every first Saturday in a Month, and for the four Saturdays before Christmas), all closed on Sunday" ever since 1996 (20:00 instead of 18:30 on Weekdays, 16:00 instead of 14:00 on Saturdays), 2003 (20:00 for all Saturdays, too), and then eventually allowing states to allow up to 24x6 ... but as most shops still close at 20:00, and only very few are open after 22:00, gas stations are still where you get stuff outside of these hours or on Sundays if you need something urgently and you're willing to pay the higher prices ...

I can only speak for the small town in Germany I live in but here no one wears masks outside. If you're in a shop that requires them sure you'll carry a mask with you and put it on before entering but I've seen basically no one wearing one for just walking around in the streets.

Maybe something for those of you who still read books: Peter Barnes "Capitalism 3.0 : a guide to reclaiming the commons" (2008). It's not the "latest version" of the New Testament, but an interesting contribution to the question how economy and peoples life could be in the future. I'd never heardt the word "illth" before ;-) ... Although COVID-19 wasn't known at that time it can be a basis to develop answers to current questions :-)

Your apartment must be newer as it has door latches in place of handles (at least the ones in the background of the video).

I would feel paralyzed if I coudn't open a door with the elbow or the knee, in case of my hands are full or just dirty. Even some cats manage to open a door with a doorhandle just be jumping on it.

I wonder where the US will go. I guess we'll see in November, but I fear an ever growing polarization. It started years ago from what I can tell as an outsider, but it's getting worse faster with Trump and Coronavirus. That said, Coronavirus protests at least in part influenced by weird ideologies are starting to pop up more and more in Germany now, too, mind.

I had to really unplug from following a lot of the news because the polarization started to really drain me. The conspiracy theories are for sure the scariest part

@@Kellydoesherthing conspiracy theories have become a problem in germany too. We hold up against it and try to respond in an active way against the tinfoil hats (in germany people who are trapped in conspiracy theories are called "tinfoil hats").

I live near a small city in New England, and today I drove a bit out of town and visited a farm stand where I was happy to see everyone there wearing a mask. I continued on to a BBQ place for takeout another 6-8 miles away and almost no one was wearing a mask, not the customers nor the employees. I don't think this bodes well for the area.

Isn’t that fascinating? In DC, I feel like people are pretty good about wearing masks when they can’t social distance....but I crossed the river into Virginia to go to a few of the stores and places you see in this video, and it was a completely different experience

@@Kellydoesherthing It is fascinating, I expect it to play a big role in how the virus tears through an area too. It only seems like the outer suburbs are safe but they're just not.

Fun fact: Almost all Germans use the term "Home office" wrongly. When you are doing what is called "Home office" in Germany, your employer is legally responsible for your home work place to follow legal requirements for ergonomics. Most people who think they do "Home office" actually do "mobile working".
