Retiring comfortably in the US these days is almost impossible. I'm planning to retire at 59 in another country outside the US that is free, safe and very cheap with a high quality of life and good healthcare. Here in the US more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.
@SteveEstrada-js9nu4 күн бұрын
The cost of living keeps going up, up and up!! Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.
@Derekhoffman3124 күн бұрын
I completely agree; I am 60 years old, recently retired, and have approximately $1,350,000 in external retirement funds. I am debt free and have very little money in retirement funds compared to the total value of my portfolio over the past three years. To be honest, having a portfolio-advisor for investing is genius! What I figured out years back what that with proper guidance, we can predict some of these situations and take advantage of them. Have you considered seeking the help of a financial advisor, the are vital towards retirement planning.

My wife and I are leaving as soon as we get our two boys on their way (est. 2029). Reasons? - Health Care. #1. I shouldn't be worried about going bankrupt if I need to go to a nursing home for more than 90 days. Note MEDICARE does NOT cover Long-Term Care. - Cost of Living. I have a son in college in Paris, France right now. I will pay less for his FOUR years in France than I paid for ONE year in Akron, OH. - Food purity. Our youngest just spent two years, one each, in Spain & France and he can't accept how artificial US food is. Our son in France says the same. - American-On-American hatred. When I was growing up, even under Nixon, people could still TALK to each other. Nowadays we're absolutely tribal in our outlooks. - Gun violence. I'm a gun owner, veteran, retired law enforcement and I absolutely agree we need gun control, AND mental health spending. Watch the hatred this post will generate and you'll see point #4 in action.

There was a time when America held her head high as being a safe country, a prosperous country, a just country. Those days are gone. I am watching the violence, the theft, the rich get richer, and the poor struggling to survive. It's like watching a third-world country on tv when I was a kid. America is falling. It's extremely sad, and I hate it, but when people VOTE for it, well, I'm done here. I DO live in a "third world banana republic," and I am safer here, I feel more respected here and more free here. There isn't the gaslighting of "We're the greatest country in the world." Ecuador knows what Ecuador is, and the people are proud. They fight the government when it oversteps. "Indians," the indigenous here are and have been completely accepted into society. They have shops, businesses, families, and farms. They have a strong voice in government. Being from Montana, I see the differences, and I am sad for the North American tribes. They continue to suffer. They continue to be considered outsiders when THEY are the original Americans. The sins of America have become too many to bury, too many to hide and too heavy to carry.
@sleepinglady2778Ай бұрын
The hate on immigration is going to backfire too. Americans hating on immigrants have no idea how much they contribute to our economy and communities. Even Regan was a big proponent of immigration. Not sure when Republicans started hating on immigrants but it's shameful how the kids/babies were separated from their mothers at the border the last Trump administration. They violated human rights laws. The way they dealt with them was similar to the NAZIS treatment of Jews in Germany. I can't believe we did that to people. Humans. The cruelty is unbelievable this day. Christians do not treat people this way.

I agree 100% with Bianca Lynch on every single point she makes. The American Dream has become a fuzz at best. I would even say it’s become a bad dream. The US is still a decent place if and only if you are a billionaire. It wasn’t always this way. The disparity of wealth has skyrocketed and keeps accelerating to unsustainable levels. We are approaching a situation akin to Russia where the majority of people live in or near poverty while a tiny number of oligarchs own and control absolutely everything. When a single individual is so rich that he could solve homelessness with fraction of his wealth but instead chooses to build private spaceships there is something seriously wrong. When the unhooked numbers tens of thousands next door to the greatest concentration of wealth in the country there is something seriously wrong. People are angry and upset because they get poorer every generation while the few get richer. But the rich have successfully bought politicians with great talent for political misdirection away from the disparity of wealth and onto culture wars. That is unlikely to be fixable without another revolution.
@rauxhyde2614Ай бұрын
Yup
@DannyBowen25Ай бұрын
DEMOCRATS created the disparity in wealth. Every plan that a Democrat has to solve something, does the opposite of it. Raise the minimum wage? That means more people in the middle class are sucked below the poverty line because THE POVERTY LINE MOVES KIDS. That means that the business MUST raise its prices to cover the new added risk, and since every business must do this, the inflation that is caused has to be added to the profit in order to reduce the extra risk. Literally, government regulation is how businesses smash the little guys, and you guys have one idea.. MORE GOVERNMENT POWER, that can be exploited by lobbyists even MORE than it already is.

I agree with this woman 100%! Life is too short to have to constantly struggle!!! I want to leave the U.S. matrix myself!!! I already have a U.S. passport. I just have to find a way to earn extra money/passive income to be able to travel and live abroad. Also, I'm tired of this country's worship of money and that almost everything caters to the wealthy or big business. For example, things like healthcare and college should be free/a public good not as a scam or racket!! However, a second Trump administration will only make things much worse!!!

Maybe your choice of country wasn't right. As an African American, you thought that going to an African country was like returning home. It is not. Only to white Americans are you an " African American." To everyone outside the US, including in Africa, you are an American full stop. I think Trevor Noah expressed it very well. If you choose a South American or European country you might feel more comfortable. Don't kid yourself, there is racism everywhere, but few countries reach the levels in the US.

I left the USA for 2 full years (2017-2019). During that time, I hopped around to 9 different countries, including coming back to the USA for less than 6 weeks in that 2-year time span. During that time span, also lived in Wales, United Kingdom and Poland as a digital nomad. More than 10 years ago, I lived in southern Spain and Canada as a digital nomad, as well. So sure, I certainly understand about lifestyle choices, better food, and that feeling of freedom when we are elsewhere.

Exactly correct. I have lived in Southeast Asia for most of the past 11 years and am now retired. It's so nice to have freedom FROM so many harsh, dangerous, and excruciatingly painful about living in the US. Wonderful not to be in survivor mode and living in fear. And definitely wouldn't be able to live in a/c two bedroom, two bath house with clean water, hot showers an a second floor balcony for less than $300 with utilities included! Best wishes from Cambodia.

Ever since Trump appeared on the political scene, I have seen an epidemic of anger, trolling, vindictiveness and fear, mostly coming from those supporting Trump. I have seen wealth concentrating in the US since the 1980's, but no American ever wanted to acknowledge that it was a problem. It was as everyone was happily marching towards the cliff's edge. It has reached a point where three people have as much wealth as half of all Americans. I thought "at one point, something is going to give." The US is reaching that point. Either it becomes a full on dictatorship, a feudal type oligarchy, or it explodes into revolutionary violence. I grew up in a war. I understand why people would want to get out.

As the oppressed it makes a big difference for mental health and opportunities when you can remove yourself from a toxic environment. Sadly when slavery was abolished here in the US the same blessings weren't afforded. They had to stay in the trenches and fight for every advancement for African-Americans. So honestly, I don't blame her for leaving. It vastly affects your health in more ways than one.

I’ve already developed a plan to buy several homes in Europe over the next 10 years and live in various countries until my eventual retirement in 20-30 years.
