But most of the Hutongs that were a big part of the cities heritage have been destroyed already.

@@eh4026 what do you mean "most"? the city wall ran along the 2nd ring road majority of the urban space inside it are made up of Hutong, there are modernization needs by having wide boulevards, but Hutong is the norm with wider modern roads bisecting the areas into neighbourhoods. I encourage you to visit the city instead of listening to 3rd hand information. compared to Kyoto, Beijing has much bigger preserved historic neighborhoods. funny how no one speak about Japan in such ill informed attitude.

It would be a dream to me to visit Beijing. I dream about know the culture of China, its Places, poetry, arts, History and to present to the Chinese People the culture of Brazil. The drums of a Brazilian Band called 'Timbalada'. The songs of Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Zé Geraldo, Zé Ramalho and many more. The Brazilian and Portuguese poetry. It would be a wonderful experience for both sides.

My parents live in an old part of Beijing. They hired some people to build a third floor. Though government officials have aisles to take it down, I hope they can come to a compromise.

China: Changes we can see

They should design mid level rise (3 to 4 stories) traditional Chinese architecture homes and tear down the Concrete block housing in Beijing. Also make more of the city car free and walkable. Rebuild the Old City walls and surround them with a wide green belt with gardens to separate the City from the Urban Sprawl. One more thing, add more grandiose Traditional Architectural(Chinese) public spaces (palaces used for public/exhibition purposes, and Temples teaching traditional religion).And do all this with quality and multi generational use in mind. I feel that this will turn Beijing into a brighter Jewel of a City. A Rome of the East. p.s This should be done in nearly every town(and new cities and villages) in China
