I crack my own Diesel from waste motor oil with heat around 650° distilled then it is mixed with Ethyl oxide settled for one week then it is water washed settled for one week then you end up with a clear orange liquid that is in a diesel Spectrum runs an engine perfectly with no issues cost about 10 cents a gallon life is good

I was curious about this process and was glad to see a 3-4 minute video. Unfortunately, this is a bit too complex for a layman like myself to get from such a short video. I'll probably look for another 15-30 minutes when I have more time. Not all of it went over my head. Some hit me in the head, and now I'm a bit smarter with a headache. That's how learning works, right?
@kma3647Ай бұрын
You're right to observe this. You're probably wanting a bit more about the chemistry, which is really important. This is definitely the 3 minute version and it's a high-speed flyby of the topic. As someone with a biochemistry degree, I have a bit of a background, but many questions still arise about the inorganic chemistry at play and some of the jargon used. For me, the key themes are: we have a wide range of mixtures that we call "oil." Each of those mixtures goes through a very intricate separation process to separate the components of those mixtures. And for economic reasons, we find uses for literally every molecule that comes out of the ground so that none of the effort made here is wasted. The last thing anyone wants is industrial waste or oil spills.

We can take advantage of pulling up to a pump and fueling are vehicles with ease. Just like we buy a gallon of milk in the store. Little or no knowledge required to know how they came to the consumer. I worked in the oil patch “wrenching rods” on work over rigs as a kid of late teens into my early 20s. I listened and learned so much about the oil and natural gas business. Also the value of hard work in all types of weather. Thus I appreciate the men and women working in the patch or refinery every time I fill up my car.

Well mate milk comes from a cow. The cow first gets in calf via sex with bull. When the calf is born the cow begins to lactate. Farmer Joe milks the cow and gets paid 3/8 of FA. You buy the milk. The oil thing I'm not so familiar with.

So at about $70/barrel for light sweet crude, and 20 gallons of gasoline per 42 gallon barrel, that means each gallon raw cost is about $1.70. Less than half the price of a gallon at the pump. Fuel additives, profits from refining, transportation (plus profits), distribution (plus profits), and taxes make up the other $2+ per gallon we end up paying. In some states, the taxes are on the order of $1/gallon.

Compare the cost of 1 gallon of gasoline at the pump to the cost of a 1 liter of bottled water in the grocery store. Oil companies are amazing, where as government taxes are insane.
@lylestavast76524 күн бұрын
cost of a gallon of gas per EIA stats in October 2024: 55% crude, 11% refining, 18% marketing and distribution and 16% taxes. And you end up with more fluids after refining than you put into the process due to refinery expansion - it's almost 45 gallons of total various products out the back end, almost all of which are higher profit margin than gasoline specifically, and diesel same at times.

I suspect the stink is some of those sulfurous components mentioned in the video. Hydrogen sulfide is the same stuff that makes rotten eggs smell. Those sulfur components get removed from the hydrocarbons as much as possible (no separation is ever 100%) and because it's a volatile gas, some of it escapes to pollute your nose. My guess is that they recover 99%+ of those sulfurous components and are required to do so by the EPA, though I'd have to dig for the details.

I have wondered why, for the last few decades, Diesel is more expensive that gasoline. It seems like it takes less refining.

Very simple... taxes. Excise taxes, road use taxes, etc etc. If you want a real idea what diesel actually cost, check the off-road diesel prices at the nearest co-op.

@@jimgoff1170 more processing, same crudes generally. They often use Cobalt catalyst as part of the process to pull out most of the sulfur now. There are some other processes to do it too, that's just a really common one. They do that to gasoline sold since 2017 as well, just different specs. That spec set was called Tier 3, which dropped average S allowed from 30 parts to million to 10, and along with it newer catalytic converters on cars since then operate dramatically clean on it too - older ones even are cleaner. Not many places and volumes produce anymore that aren't Tier 3 compliant in the US but some smaller refineries got extra time to get updated for that set of changes.

Have always wondered is what if the oil refinery wanted to produce more diesel, for example swap the percentage of gasoline and distillates with diesel making up 45% of a barrel of oil and gasoline only 12.5. Could this be done?
@Ares-jx4epАй бұрын
Short answer, percentage of a given product depends on the specific gravity of the starting crude. Light crude will naturally produce a higher percentage of lighter output. By blending the input crude to a target weight you can adjust the output percentage of each product. If you start with a very heavy input you'll get a much higher percentage of tar.
@lylestavast76524 күн бұрын
depends some on what's called the complexity of the refinery, eg how many processing options they have. They can tweak beyond the natural splits of distillation for a given set of inputs up that stack a few %pts but it's not simply flipping a dial and change the output. You're limited in practicality and how much energy is needed to pull off whatever limits you can extend too. But short chains of HC can be joined or split if you have the right process/gear. More diesel, you might rejoin some short chains into longer chains, that sort of thing. Break down diesel length chains, you might come up with more of gasoline or jet fuels etc... it's kind of endless the options. And different properties in the source crude mix going in will allow variation in output of product. When they blend different inputs, they do the chem math and come up with a "crude slate" of inputs. Not all crude breaks up into the same %s of output products, you tailor that crude slate to get the desired output mix of products - but there are some limits. There are some standard output ratios they generally work toward too because they know what the markets can absorb/require.

imperial is easy to learn, if i can convert between the two with ease at 18, you should to. 1 gallon = ~3.8 litre 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 mile = 1.6 km 12 inches in a foot 36 in a yard nobody converts between feet and miles. likewise we dont use decimals height is 5”10 (five foot 10 [inches]), this is ~178cm. volume is a bit more difficult, but nothing that comes up in normal conversion. we generally use acres and square feet for land area. other misc information is that for precision endeavors, we either use millimetres or fractions for inches, for example, 6 & 1/16th inches. either that or thousandths (of a inch) for machine work
