LOL he had some lessons and geoff even talks about the fact everyone states he trained long term with him... for some reason this little known fact goes unnoticed is that his grandmother also trained him and she was a classically trained opera singer also... he went to pyle for some finishing and smoothing of his technique... it is weird where everyone gets their info yet he is in tons of interviews talking all about it...i guess it is the fact they want to link local legends with another local legend.. shrugs

Great of you to put Ian in with RJ, Rob, and Bruce. For some reason he doesn't get much of the respect he's due from a lot of the classic hard rock/metal fans. I see you are a man of culture as well. Further, I would add Coverdale and Rogers to that group when listing mine. Oh, and Plant is on his own damned planet, but it's a completely different one from the one Tate owns because they are radically different vocalists.

I started listening to rock and metal since 1970 (6 yrs old), and until the late 90's there was very few bands i never heard in full. Rock and Metal music from the 70's and 80's will never be matched..ever. The depth of lyrics as in the entire Operation Mindcrime album and songs like Diary of a Madman, and of course the we first side of 2112, will never be matched again. We all know the guitar Gods feom that era..with each having unique voices and soul, also singers like Mr. Tate gave the songa the talented and memorable voices, we will never hear again. Maybe I'm just getting old and living in the past?. But in past 25 years or so, there just is no real originality anymore. Damn, i wish those days never ended...

Tate's voice is partly so strong because however the heck he makes that general unbreathy vocal tone, the 'snarl' mix has REALLY strong overtones. When he hits that high note, you can hear three separate tones if you listen carefully, especially as he fades out a bit. I think that's why you're hearing the initial separation. The top tone might even be considered a whistle range sound. It's crazy, and I have no idea how much is technique and how much is just his natural singing voice, but I also have no idea how it can be replicated. Some of it is coming from really high and far back in his throat / sinus area. It's often easier to make a two-tone throat-and-whistle sound unvoiced (while sort of whispering really hard), but while belting it out like that? Crazy.

Geoff is ELVIS! QUEENSRYCHE is one of the very best bands you will ever hear. Geoff is a badass singer! Saw them in concert 21 times from their first tour on up! Excellent, super clean, live band. Always delivered big time! Operation Mindcrime is a concept album masterpiece that you have to listen to completely uninterrupted, start to finish like you watch a really good movie, because that’s what it is, only audibly. Set aside some time by yourself to do it right. Have the lyrics in front of you so you can follow the story. It’s recognized as one of the greatest concept albums of all time. Going to take you back to 1984 here. I was 19, almost 20, and my favorite "new-ish" bands (as opposed to the established acts like Zep, the Stones, Rush, etc.) were Def Leppard and Iron Maiden. Distinct Brit flavor there. The year earlier I had heard the four song eponymous EP and really liked it, but there were a hometown band for me, the industry is never going to recognize a band from the backwoods of Seattle. We'd pushed our quota with Hendrix and Heart so too much to expect them to take any one else. Boy, did history really prove me wrong on that a few years later. So I was at a record store in Mt Vernon, saw their first full album, "The Warning" on sale and was so excited I bought it sight unseen. Tape cassette version. Got home, popped it in the stereo, hoping that it wasn't a turkey. The album floored me. Not just Geoff's vocals but Chris and Eddie's dual guitar attack, Michael and Scott's tight rhythm section, top to bottom a great album from an awesomely talented band.

Watch this entire concert here on KZbin. I discovered them after Rage for Order was released. Been a huge fan since.

Of course the commercial songs like Silent Lucidity are really really good. You’ll fall in love with his voice. The deep cuts in a where he amazes. The Mindcrime album is just… do the whole thing. Concept album. Incredible music and vocals, the whole album.

I remember in an interview Geoff made a comment about another interview he did after Silent Lucidity broke big. The guy doing the interview basically had little or knowledge of the band, he asked them why they did such a "concept album" like Empire. His reply was that it was the "least concept album" they had done.

Stop already so surreal I had this song one of my favorites from warning playing in my car on cassette while driving around campus as a freshman in college and back then simply couldn't believe what I was hearing. Now looking back I know most people knew little about warning. I can't imagine a better review of little known song here. Thanks for sharing your expertise

Lovely - I’m hoping you enjoy the neighborhood. I lived 1 street north of Lincoln Center / their nearly 20 years! What a truly wonderful place for young, aspiring artists to make make their mark ❤️😊

I was blown away when I heard their ep in 1983 through my neighbor's 12 D battery ghetto blaster. Saw them the following year open up for Iron Maiden. My first real concert, and still one of the best.

If I had to guess, I would say that when he "separated" that high note he actually took a quick breath so that he would have enough air to sustain the note the way he wanted.

Not only is he that in tune, this is also the end of a 3+ hour concert where nearly every song was at this level, it's hard to fathom.

What I always loved with queensryche (or how you spell it) and Jeff, is that he’s a master at pulling his pitch a bit down! Always loved it ❤️

Never forgrt- 14 years later and I still love Queensryche for kicking complete Arse Live and caring enough to come to a combat zone (Joint Base Balad, Iraq) and remind us of home and those we're fighting for and love--Thank you so much!

This is one of those songs that you remember exactly when, where and what you were doing when you hear it for the first time. That would of been out on a logging landing in my 69 Ranchero tipping back some adult beverages with a bud and he says to me, here dude you gotta hear this man it will blow your mind! That was almost 40 years ago and it still gives me chills every time I hear it!
