Great of you to put Ian in with RJ, Rob, and Bruce. For some reason he doesn't get much of the respect he's due from a lot of the classic hard rock/metal fans. I see you are a man of culture as well. Further, I would add Coverdale and Rogers to that group when listing mine. Oh, and Plant is on his own damned planet, but it's a completely different one from the one Tate owns because they are radically different vocalists.

I started listening to rock and metal since 1970 (6 yrs old), and until the late 90's there was very few bands i never heard in full. Rock and Metal music from the 70's and 80's will never be matched..ever. The depth of lyrics as in the entire Operation Mindcrime album and songs like Diary of a Madman, and of course the we first side of 2112, will never be matched again. We all know the guitar Gods feom that era..with each having unique voices and soul, also singers like Mr. Tate gave the songa the talented and memorable voices, we will never hear again. Maybe I'm just getting old and living in the past?. But in past 25 years or so, there just is no real originality anymore. Damn, i wish those days never ended...

Tate's voice is partly so strong because however the heck he makes that general unbreathy vocal tone, the 'snarl' mix has REALLY strong overtones. When he hits that high note, you can hear three separate tones if you listen carefully, especially as he fades out a bit. I think that's why you're hearing the initial separation. The top tone might even be considered a whistle range sound. It's crazy, and I have no idea how much is technique and how much is just his natural singing voice, but I also have no idea how it can be replicated. Some of it is coming from really high and far back in his throat / sinus area. It's often easier to make a two-tone throat-and-whistle sound unvoiced (while sort of whispering really hard), but while belting it out like that? Crazy.
