The rise of big data has redefined the relationship between science and one of the world’s most physically demanding sports.
Technology is being used to give players, coaches, and trainers more information than ever before. In this episode of The Numbers Game we discover what data is being recorded, what can be done with it, and how it translates into real wins on the park.
Catapult Research Development is an Australian company at the forefront of wearable GPS technology. They walk us through the ways they’re giving teams a competitive edge using analytics collected by tiny devices worn by players in games and at training. These devices record data that maps player performance and provides deep insight, eliminating guesswork from training, coaching, and strategy.
The developers explain how rolling average is one of the most important statistics drawn from this data. Acceleration and deceleration is measured to produce stats on peak player performance. It’s used to find the performance levels needed in training to ensure the best possible outcome not only in matches, but throughout a player's entire career.
Will these new metrics ever replace gut instinct? We spend time with sports scientists from Catapult and Victoria University, as well as coaching staff from NRL club Melbourne Storm to find out.

What a ridiculous comment. It's got nothing to do with making the game complicated, they're making training better, getting an edge for the game. Look at the game and athletes now compared to 20 or more years ago. Lifelong couch potato are ya?

Vice I love this. This is some genuinely interesting and enlightening stuff. Never knew about this before. But I gotta ask, why Australia? American sports have a TON of data and analytics. I mean, Moneyball is a good example.

As somebody who has played both rugby league and baseball, I think the Moneyball question is relevant. But.....on a statistics level, baseball is about stats more so.

I don't understand the appeal for rugby league when union the skills seem to be so much better and maybe Australia would be good if they didn't focus on league as much
@MajesticSkywhale
@MajesticSkywhale 8 жыл бұрын
because league is faster, heavier and requires more stamina
@MajesticSkywhale
@MajesticSkywhale 8 жыл бұрын
***** I have played both, although aussie rules is my main game. You have more time to rest in union because of lineouts and actually setting up to contest a real scrum, so the game is mostly runrunrunrunHIT, runrunrunrunrunHIT
@MajesticSkywhale
@MajesticSkywhale 8 жыл бұрын
***** indeed maybe it was just because I played Prop, so i spent almost the entire time hitting and getting hit, and it seemed more frequent than in union. I prefer AFL much much more anyway, much faster paced than both rugby codes
@MajesticSkywhale

***** just said I played Prop :P
@MajesticSkywhale
@MajesticSkywhale 8 жыл бұрын
***** well, it doesnt for a prop, and i personally enjoy union more because theres more intricate things to do, i mean in league the team as a whole seems to do a lot more running, if for no other reason than you never see teams kicking it back and forth for field position in league and theres no lineouts, which are both chances to catch your breath in union
