How Is Occupational Therapy Different from Physiotherapy? | Occupational Therapy in Paralysis
Today, in this video, Dr. Pragti Gupta will be talking about the difference between occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
Stroke leads to neurological damage that affects the motor system, making limbs weak and limiting movements. It can also affect sensory input to the brain impair speech, vision, touch, and more.
Fortunately, stroke survivors can regain movement and prevent further complications through passive and active rehabilitation exercises. Each type of exercise serves different and essential purposes for stroke patients. There are two types of activities that help relieve stroke. The first is active exercises, and the second is passive exercises.
Active exercises involve your physical effort exerted into muscular activity.
These exercises can include an active range of motion, like self-stretching, or general stroke rehabilitation exercises where you move your muscles through therapeutic movements.
When you're doing the exercises yourself, it is known as active exercise.
Passive exercises prevent stiffness and regain range of motion in muscles, whereas active exercises help strengthen the communication between the brain and body for increased movement. Therefore, immediate and continuous rehabilitation exercises are essential in a survivor's progress after stroke.
Occupational Therapists (OT) and Physical therapists (PT) are part of your stroke care team. OT and PT will create a rehabilitation program tailored to your specific needs to help you regain function and become as independent as possible. A rehabilitation program is not a "cure." It cannot reverse brain damage, but it can significantly help patients achieve the best possible quality of life after a stroke. OT and PT serve different roles in stroke rehabilitation.
Physiotherapists focus on improving gross motor skills, which need entire body movement and involve the body's big muscles to perform daily functions. These everyday functions include sitting upright, standing, walking, and running. For example, children will have trouble playing with friends at the playground, playing sports, or moving around without gross motor skills.
On the other hand, occupational therapists focus on improving fine motor skills, which involve using the minor muscle of the hands. Fine motor skills are vital for a patient to perform their daily self-care.
