Hello, Flynn Dixon from Brisbane Australia here. Would you say it is more important to have a vast knowledge of scales and just know all the basic chord shapes (barre, Open and a few different fingerings for basic chords) or to know 3 or 4 common scales and learn extensively about chords, chord progressions, how and why different chords go together and as many different chord fingering positions for as many chords as possible? Thank you have a great day.

I play most instruments, and love recording and producing covers, just for my own enjoyment, but I feel like I don't do it well. I use Reaper, and for guitar and bass use the Positive Grid Spark as my amp since I can use sims in there, along with the audio interface parts so that I can record it, and that sounds ok, but it still just doesn't come out the way I want it, and I don't know how to fix that. Hey Trey, I'm Shannon from Australia. I've played guitar for 16 years (since I was 7), but when it comes to recording tracks, I feel like everything, such as my playing & tone, have to be perfect otherwise it will be unlistenable. I was wondering if you have any tips on how I can overcome this mental hurdle so I can have some confidence to learn & start recording? Cheers!
@alexeypolevoybass3 жыл бұрын
Trey is never going to respond you, so I will. It's a yes for playing, but a no for tone. Even if you've got shitty tone, you will sound good if your playing is at level. I mean, Dimebag Darrell had one of the shittiest tones in entire metal music history, yet he's a true, self made legend. If your tone is tolerable, most of listeners are not gonna give a slightest fuck about that; but if you play like wet pussy, some listeners gonna notice that immediately. Of course, you can “fix” your timing and sloppiness by making a Frankenstein our of your recorded tracks, but always remember how ashamed you will be when you gonna play that live with all the horrible mistakes you cut out behind the scenes. So yes, if you can't nail it, don't call it a finished recording, and never attempt releasing it. You'll thank me a lot for this advice if you actually use it. However, you should always record yourself to just know if you are ready to record anything for a release. You're not gonna learn much if you don't record and analyze yourself. So you must learn basics of recording as early as possible, and be conscious about what goes into release and what doesn't. If you can't record the whole part in one take from start to finish of the song, you didn't learn the song yet. If there are lots of mistakes and crappy extra sounds like unused strings ringing, there they will remain until YOU actually do something about that. Don't listen to those who say that “you can fix it in the mix”; get your playing right, it will speed up your recording process exponentially, until you get to the point where you record in under three takes, so you can theoretically record an hour long album per day, working less than 8 hours. It's real, and takes not very long to achieve, just don't expect yourself to be the next Guthrie Govan, who can pull off almost everything that's ever written for any instrument out there. Your playing should be perfectly good, but only for stuff you're playing, so if you can't play 16th notes sweep arpeggios in 220 BPM, that's not a problem if you're, say, covering Pink Floyd or playing indie rock/pop; but stuff like not muting strings you don't use is a huge problem regardless of genre, because it's a basic fucking thing. So get real, practice for real, and release some real stuff. Don't jump in on the train of “I'm too lazy to learn even the basics”. Your value as a musician is skyrocket high when you actually know how to handle your instrument. I am a long time bass player with formal training in classical music, been working as a studio recording/mixing/mastering engineer, as well as a live show sound guy, for a bit more than a decade, coming into business back again really soon. You won't believe amount of outright shitty musicians I dealt with, coming in confidence they will sound better in studio because they've got shitty interface at home, and you probably know how much more of them are on stages. Not a single one of them liked to practice, almost 100% despised metronome, and complained it “kills their focus on rhythm”. If you've got the money, you can hire better musicians to record and arrange your songs for you, like many famous rock bands do, and you can even hire them to be full members of your band, like Dave Mustaine did. Otherwise, you need to be good at playing to release your stuff. There's no third way.
