I would have to disagree with you. On pure tenor ability, maybe. Don't get me wrong, I listen to David Phelps a ton! He is absolutely incredible! But as far as talented singer I would think Dimash has to be in the same discussion and probably more gifted over all! But David Phelps never gets old and I listen to him 100 times more than Dimash. But solely based on ability I think Dimash is probably better. Just my opinion...... I feel so dirty saying someone is better than David Phelps! LOL

@@PBAdventures146 To me the argument can be made both ways, but for me personally Dimash has a lot of niche vocal tricks that he uses to stand out but his normal chest is inferior not only to David but I think to many other tenors such as Bocelli or Pavarotti, I would even say someone like Steve Green in his prime was a much better pure tenor then Dimash. And if Dimash truly is a better vocalist then why did you not say you constantly listen to him? Why is it painful to say he is better then David? Could it be there's more to being a great vocalist then tricks and vocal range? Don't get me wrong I think Dimash is a great talent but people don't listen to him for the music or the song or what he's singing, it's all about what weird thing he will do with his voice that no one else does. And to me this doesn't make him a great artist just a talented vocalist with his own gimmick. Again I say all this not to insult Dimash and lift up David, David doesn't need anyone defending him and probably thinks Dimash is amazing as well lol. I say this merrily to express my opinion.

@@benbowman6995 the reason I listen to Phelps way more is because I'm a Christian and I listen to Christian songs 100 to 1 🙂 and David is about my first choice for that. I wouldn't argue with you when it comes to pure tenor. I thought I mentioned that.. Maybe not. Loved Steve Green as well.. went to several of his concerts.. both are phenomenal in their own right and both have an amazing ability to tell a story with the way they sing and express their body language.

David is a vocal performance major from Baylor University in Texas. He was brought to the big scene by Bill Gaither straight to the Gaither Vocal Band as their new tenor when Johnathan Pierce left for personal reasons. David was with the GVB 3 different times for a total of about 13-15 years. He has always said that he has always felt he was called to sing Gospel music and that’s what he does.

As someone else pointed out, this was from about 20 years ago. The Gaithers (Bill & Gloria) attract some of the best talent in the world to sing with them. There are maybe a dozen Dove and/or Grammy award winners in the choir behind him. I believe that both writers of Mary Did You Know are there (Mark Lowry is right behind him and Buddy Green is with the musicians, if he's there). Gloria Gaither, by the way, is just to stage left of David. Sadly several of those in the choir have died in the intervening years. One of the best parts of listening and watching a Gaither event is how the "backing vocalists", all of whom are artists in their own right, appreciate, support, encourage and are blessed by whoever has the spotlight at the moment. You could do worse than react to any Gaither video. It may not be your musical taste, but you won't lack genuine talent.

This is my favorite version of this song. Just a note all the background singers are gospel artists in their on right. Either as a solo artist or a group. They are some of the most famous southern gospel singers of all time who get together with Bill and Gloria Gaither to do these homecoming videos. I don't know if you noticed the Piano player Anthony Berger. He won the dove award in gospel music for best musician so many time I think they named the award after him. On a sad not he passed away in his 40's while doing what he loved. He was playing a song with Bill and Gloria on a gospel cruise and had a massive heart attact while playing his piano and they couldn't revive him. So sad.

I was lucky enough to be into the Gaither Homecoming videos a few years befor this one. The Christmas Concert the year before this one they featured a different tenor, Larry Ford who I thought did a spectacular job with "Oh Holy Night". I didnt think at the time he would be topped the following year when they featuered David Phelps. Boy was I astounded when he did this live the next year. I have listened to this recording hundreds of times since and have never heard anyone do it as well including other recordings of him doing it. It amazes me that there are people who still are hearing this for the first time some 22 years later. How someone with this much talent hasn't been better known until now is actually a testiment to his dedication to remain mostly a Contemporary Christian Artist. He does perform some opera and covers some secular songs with every bit as much perfection. Try listening or reacting to Whitney Houston's " I Have Nothing "

each individual in that choir is a talented/famous gospel artist in their own right. Right behind Phelps is Mark Lowry who wrote "Mary did you Know?"

Your reaction is the same as EVERYONES when they first hear this: Stunned silence. This is one of the most powerful performances I've ever heard.

I can't believe no one on KZbin has done a reaction video to Al Green's version of O Holy Night, it's truly a unique & special version, he manages to make a 70's soul version, and of course Al Green has a flawless voice

I loved your reaction to this, Schnell. He really is amazing. I saw the Gaithers at Air Canada Place, probably 10 or more years ago, and it was a wonderful evening of music. David Phelps is a very, very talented singer, and pulls you right into the story of the song.

David is classically trained, as you could tell. He is a member of the Gaither Vocal Band and sings with Bill Gaither’s Homecoming gospel group. Bill and Gloria Gaither have written many, many gospel songs together. He usually writes the music and she the lyrics. Please listen to some of their songs. You will be blessed!

This performance always reminds of Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma where even he knows something supernatural just happened and all he can do is be in awe. David seems to have sensed that, also. Amen is right!

David Phelps has been around for quite some time (I believe this video was many years ago), although he's still performing and have always admired his work, but have never seen him live !! I don't know if your reaction to Christmas songs are now over, but, if so, one disappointment is that you missed out on the huge play list of Pentatonix....one song in particular is their "Carol of the Bells" that they recorded 10 years ago. If anything, it shows Mitch to be truly an "alien". At the point, when he starts singing, it seems that he goes almost a minute continuously without a breathe...HOW IN THE WORLD CAN HE DO THAT ?? As a singer yourself, can you explain how that is done ??
