1973..Toy the lead singer/lead guitar player..served 2 tours in Vietnam..was wounded..recovered..went back to Vietnam for 2nd tour..received Purple Heart..Toy wrote this song because of all the Dear John letters the guys in his Unit were receiving while in Vietnam..Returned to the U.S. form the Marshall Tucker Band and dropped this number 1 hit..Toy died in April in the 1980s..age 26..legendary Southern Rock icons..and Toy lead guitar player never used a guitar pick..just his thumb..please please don't run a commentary throughout the song..speak afterwards..thank you

It's nice to see you enjoying this music. I'm 73 years old. The Marshall Tucker Band was one of my favorites back in the 70's. I was fortunate to see them perform live. The 70's were a wonderful time to be alive! The music was so genuine and band members had real talent. We took all that music for granted. We didn't realize how great we had it. I'm very fortunate to still be alive and I remember those times so well. I even still have my long hair!

Classical Greek profile and such a powerful, clean voice that seems to be effortless. He sang this song perfectly, live, no autotune. Women just went nuts over Tom, for obvious reasons. The guy was a Hunk. A Welsh/Greek Harry Belafonte. Belafonte is another powerful, melodic voice worth looking into.
