Also, this episode of VeggieTales featured close-ups of characters having human limbs, followed by the characters freaking out about it and going "Ah! The feet!" or whatever. Probably the funniest gag VeggieTales ever did, and it fits perfectly with the mystery/horror theme of the original novel

It’s so good because you probably didn’t even notice until something was off the carrot reacts to it because “hand knocks on door” is a very normal shot in all media that it can be shown without eliciting a reaction Until the carrot goes “THE HAND!” And you remember “wait they don’t have hands”

What made this even better, is that I rented a DVD copy of this when I was a child shortly after release, and it was corrupted. Disc was scratched and would glitch out, but it just so happened to glitch out basically whenever they did this gag. As a small child, that was existential horror.

It’s kind of like how one of the most accurate adaptations of the Arthurian mythos is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It doesn’t make sense why the comedy is so accurate at first, but I think that’s actually their secret weapon. By not trying to be serious adaptations they’re able to include things that traditional writers would drop in favor of a more conventional narrative.

I mean, it kind of makes sense, Robert Louis Stevenson was a Christian who was already using Jekyll and Hyde as a metaphor for sin and how it's something you are born with and have to control. Veggie Tales would have every reason to want to stick to the original story because both the book and the show have the same goal

Which is odd because the message is almost the opposite; it ends with Dr. Jiggle dancing in front of people without the restrictive costume that slimmed him down and learning that "When you realize God made you special, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, you can just be yourself." Which admittedly works better when all the good Doctor was hiding was his dance lessons. I do appreciate that, even if they talk about Christian values, Veggietales never shames the kids watching.

To be fair, Jekyll and Hyde being the same person is one of the most famous twists of all time. If you've ever heard of the story, the twist will be the first thing you learn, so it'd be pretty silly for an adaptation to hinge on the audience trying to figure out the twist alongside Utterson the way the original book does. That is, of course, unless said adaptation is specifically designed to be baby's first exposure to the story.
@curtthegamer934
@curtthegamer934 10 күн бұрын
I disagree. There are always going to be a few people out there who don't know the twist. You'd definitely want it to actually be a twist just for those few people. Heck, there are already parents who are deliberately raising their kids with no exposure to the Darth Vader twist from Star Wars so they can actually be surprised the first time they see it, and the results have for the most part been successful. There's no reason parents can't do the same for other famous plot twists.

@rainpooper7088 I was looking for this comment. I also feel like by shifting to the perspective of Dr. Jekyll the story works better as a musical. There's also another element here; the book itself is very bare bones. I don't mean to say that the book isn't brilliant either by the way, I'd say that the book is a masterpiece partly because of how bare bones it is. It has so much depth and so many questions and perspectives you could draw out of it. In that sense, it makes excellent fan fiction material.
@curtthegamer934
@curtthegamer934 8 күн бұрын
I feel like maybe they could pull one on the majority of the audience still, by simply changing the characters' names and maybe setting it in a different time period. Essentially do a "stealth adaptation" of the story, where it's an adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde, but you market it as a murder mystery movie. Nobody would know that it's an adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde (even those who have read the book) until the very end of the movie, because of the changed character names.

This isn’t the only time VeggieTales has done this. Several years later, they did an adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s _A Little Princess_ titled “The Penniless Princess.” In the book, Sarah’s father dies. In the 1995 live-action movie, they rewrite it to have Sarah’s father survive with amnesia, which is of course miraculously reversed in the end. Well, in the VeggieTales version, Sarah’s father (who is portrayed by _Larry the Cucumber,_ mind you), dies. For real. No fake-out, no amnesia, he’s dead. EDIT: I originally said “Disney movie,” but as a reply pointed out, I was wrong and it was made by Warner Bros.

I CANNOT. BELIEVE. I got recommended a video with this title 💀 I am not kidding I have literally said this to my friends and they do not believe me, WHY is the Veggietales parody of the novel the most accurate adaptation?? I grew up with Veggietales so I had this episode, like most of the rest, emblazoned in my memory eternally - and just last year I read the original novel for the first time and fell absolutely in love, I have been obsessed with the story ever since, it's my favorite book probably of all time. And in my head I may or may not have always read the name "Poole" with Angus' angry Scottish accent. So when I went looking for adaptations of this story, I was soooo disappointed to find none of them are remotely close to the original - not even the very first silent film adaptation (which I DID enjoy actually, dont get me wrong.) I was recommended the awful Broadway Musical adaptation and it's as opposite as it can possibly be to the novel. Then it hit me one day that the silly little cartoon about a dancing squash was MORE faithful to the genre, plot, setting, everything than major film adaptations. I am so tickled to see this pop up and see someone else had the exact same thought!

And to actually answer the question "Why does vegietales have the most accurate adaptation?" In the directors commentary, (its been a few years so ill have to go fact check it) They said the director of the segment read the book for some reason and went "Hey, this is pretty good, lets use it for veggetales." Edit: Anyways fact check yourself before making bold clames online kids. It turnes out, alot of people at big idea really enjoyed the book and wanted to do a parody of it. So the director went and read the book, and agreed with them, and a couple scripts later we got the episode.

In the comics, The Mask allowed Stanley to act on his repressed anger and kill people, while in the movie, Stanley's frustrations are more with his humdrum life in general, and he's not really a violent guy, so instead The Mask makes him a charismatic cartoon character who can do as he pleases.

I love that Veggie Tales did this sort of stuff; just sitting there quietly making - genuine artistic choices, in a Christian children's TV animation about talking vegetables. They did not have to make that much of an effort, or really any effort at all, but they did it anyway. Also - I think there was a French adaptation that was somewhat faithful to the mystery genre, and which made the relationship between Jekyll and the detective a main focus of characterisation. 'Le Testament du docteur Cordelier' is what Wikipedia has it as; I saw it one time on lat night pay TV when we were staying at a motel somewhere, and I was studying French at the time so I stayed up to watch it. It seemed pretty good but I was overtired and only had a middling understanding of French so your results may vary.

Veggie Tales really was a gold standard of storytelling, because they really made an effort to tell entertaining stories. It's not surprising that people don't know Jekyll & Hyde's original story, because so many filmmakers don't adapt the story and characters. It's funny to think about how lots of people object to modern filmmakers not being true to the source material, like anyone with Tolkien's Middle Earth, but there's not too many complaints about older works that filmmakers constantly change from the source material. Dracula is a prime example, as the first two movies made, Nosferatu and the Bela Lugosi movie, drastically change character and story part, but people don't talk about Dracula's adaption failures because not many people know the original work, just knockoff after knockoff. The same goes for modern Sherlock Holmes stories, that ignore key parts of his character, like how good he is with interacting with other people, comforting them during a crisis, or that he is religious.

I'm not sure how I missed out on this movie even existing, I loved VeggieTales and had a whole hyperfixation of Jekyll and Hyde adaptations. (As an aside, I just looked into VeggieTales and there are so many more than I thought?! I watched it right after it came out but like the last one I owned was the Rumor Weed one and I THINK I either checked the Esther one out from the library or watched it separately somewhere else but I knew about it existing and when I looked at a list of episodes it's FAR beyond that. o.O) And that's true about Utterson. There's such a weirdly high tendancy for Jekyll to have no friends or for Utterson's role as friend (although never as main character) to be pushed to Lanyon instead. There are a number of versions that just have a Lanyon as the concerned friend but no Utterson at all. MazM Jekyll and Hyde is one of the only other adaptations that does have Utterson IN that role as protagonist, because it's quite faithful as a mystery genre style game.

I might be sharing this take with the VeggieTales fandom if you don't mind. Combining a book-accurate parody with a lesson in self-worth and diving into the topic of self-consciousness is a massive win for this segment of A Snoodle's Tale. VT also has this whole gimmick where it doesn't exclusively appeal to Christians, so anyone of any religious affiliation, including secular, can adapt the messages to their own fit, which is my favorite thing about the show as a whole. I haven't seen their second movie based off their Pirates song yet, but their first one about Jonah has kinda grown on me (mainly because my severely Autistic brother has it on everyday lol) Also FYI you used fanart for the poster, which that itself isn't a bad thing, but what irked me is that you didn't say who the artist is, and it's kinda iffy in regards to animation right now in terms of credits & recognitions & all that. I can kinda understand since there's a whole community within the VeggieTales fandom that animates and makes fanart with their own models and it can be hard to tell the difference for most people (even some people running the official social media get messed up sometimes lol) . It can be so good in fact, that the creator of the show praised a fan project reanimating an entire episode for the 30th anniversary (Rack, Shack & Benny: Re-Molded) .

The only other version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that I know of which has Utterson is the 1986 animated version. That one tries to hybridize the mystery from Jekyll's friends' perspective while also trying to explore Jekyll's perspective (although in this version the formula is supposed to completely eradicate his evil side). It's also hilariously violent for the time. I can think of five people off the top of my head that Hyde murders in that movie.

@MoviesAndHeists There probably already are adaptations just like this out there and you're just not finding them because they don't have Jekyll and Hyde on the cover. Which is precisely why no adaptations ever do this. Say you're adapting the famous Jekyll and Hyde story (even when you're not) and you'll get a big budget and a big audience, call them Gabe and Hank and no one will care and the few who do won't be able to find it as a version of Jekyll and Hyde unless you explicitly mention Jekyll and Hyde, which in turn would give away the twist.

It sometimes seems as if everybody already knows the twist in Star Wars too. That doesn't make it any less of a great twist, and that doesn't mean that younger people who only know the Star Wars and Mr. Hyde by their popularity won't be surprised by it. If a movie accurately adapted the twist it could very well become a default best version to recommend to people who haven't heard of the original story.

Having never seen another adaptation but read the book, I didn't realize that Utterson is just completely gone from pretty much every version. I could've guessed, considering that coming to the novel from the cultural idea I was surprised by Utterson being the protagonist. A lot of Veggie Tales, especially after the company was bought by a secular children's entrainment publisher, if it's not specifically adapting a Bible story, will be a Good Moral story that has a Bible verse at the end that the publisher could cut out if they felt it necessary to sell in secular stores.

I am gonna say shout out to monster high for making the most confusing take. The characters are Jackson Jeckyll and Holt Hyde and at the beginning of the series, do not know about each other. The first confusing element here is the "Hyde Condition" as its called is supposedly a family thing that can be passed down. Yet nobody in their family thought to tell them. Second. Jackson is human in a monster high school and doesn't question it that hard. Why? Because the other half of his family are fire elementals. And so is Holt. So like a human and a fire elemental share a body and switch back and forth with different names and sets of memories... And nobody decides to study that.

I think what it comes down to is that people think if they know about a plot twist, that it is suddenly not worth partaking in fhe plot anymore. However, that is not how it should work. A good plot twist adds rewatch/reread value to allow for judgment. Whether things add up. They hit because they make sense. Unpredictability is in my opinion the least imporant part of a twist, because it's the easiest one to do. Anyone can make an ending that comes out of nowhere. What is for more important is that the audience COULD suspect it, with there being no contradictions, as well as there being an emotinal impact. Just because we all know the twist in the story doesn't mean they can't pull off an adaptation that isn't in Jeckyll's point of view. People will still be interested in the lead up if you do it well.

I guess I can see what most "adaptations" are going for because the story is so ubiquitous, you know the twist culturally, so perhaps the thought (if indeed any thought was put into it) is that "people know the punchline, so we have to do something different with it." ... not saying it's right, I think the world needs more faithful adaptations, but I'm just wondering if that's the "Why?" behind it all. Much like so many remakes of War of the Worlds tend to be. As you say, building on (...or bastardizing) the concept moreso than adaptation of the original work. Back to the topic, VeggieTales doing it accurately makes sense... young children won't necessarily know the story, nor the twist, so it's all brand new.
