The CP setup is really nice in this level. After all it seems that behavior of CP1 changes without collecting any other CP, which is impossible. What actually happens is that Carl hit CP2 below clown car and was pushed back to CP1 off screen by the muncher on same life. This saved the red coin right after CP1, so now it can behave differently.

the way the setups being different are done is with the entity limit being reset once you hit the second check point with only 1 red coin. the entities are full again allowing different things to happen. also with where you spawn into a room different things are able to spawn VS you coming in from the right side.

Played this level last night and felt the same thing you did, same spot hits you with 3-4 trolls. What I liked about it was it was overly difficult to get back to areas once you figured them out. Some troll levels are so specific that they can become unfun to play if you die constantly after you've already figured it out. I also thought the CPs were very well spaced.

Rewatching this 3 years later omg the red coin shenanigans after unknowingly cp1ing yourself was genius. You unknowingly got cp2 saving your coin then got trolled, when you got pushed offscreen by the muncher that was you also collecting cp1 which at the time I assumed it was cp2 with a replicated room.

The checkpoint setup wasn't red coins; Carl got the second CP just before he died to the CP1 setup. It was at the same spot, but the first time he could get out of there due to the mega mushroom. Then, the new switch state was saved when he died to the CP1 setup.
