There could've been fresh concrete where he sat. There could've been a wasp nest in the plant nearby. He could've been allergic to the flower's pollen. The weather could've been much worse. Yes. Nice day today. Just a minor setback.

Some people confuse pessimism with realism and confuse optimism with delusion. Toxic positivity and setting oneself up for disappointment are bad but so is toxic negativity. I call this idealism. Might not be the most technically accurate, but I understand it as a spectrum that goes Pessimism, Realism, Idealism, and then Optimism. It works out nicely for me
@WhistlingStickman6 ай бұрын
@@themindeclectic9821 I think thinking about it as a spectrum is the wrong way to go. Sometimes if we attempt to 'order' how we think about things, we end up pigeonholing and end up with classification errors. In this instance, I think there are various ways to look at things that flavors one's outlook that can't really be seen as a singular vector. For instance, some people might live moment by moment, without regard for future prospects, and some people might be 'farsighted', in a way, willing to sacrifice their moments for future prospects. The one who lives moment to moment might be in flux as to whether or not you can consider him an optimist, realist, etc, to the point where the terms are useless and 'apathy' might be a better descriptor altogether. And what do you make of the other scenario? Is someone who sees sysiphus-like sacrifice for the forseeable future necessary for the future to be good, is that person a pessimist or an optimist? Both at the same time? It's good to be aware of the perspectives of other people, consider them, and test with introspection and thought experiments to see if they reflect reality, but you shouldn't get too hung up on labels. A duck is a duck, it doesn't know it's a mallard, it doesn't know about scientific classification. But for everything we know about a duck, it knows more than we ever will what it means to live as one. If you've read all this and I haven't bored you to death, congratulations. I commend you!

the way i feel about optimism is that it isn't a naivety or ignorance, but an act of defiance to entropy. we need to find the good in the world because its genuinely hard to keep moving forward in this world full of such horror and tragedy. there's a lot wrong in the world, but we don't need to play a part in its cruelty, we all have a responsibility to make the lives of other people better, to our community. and in some cases, there is no community, so the responsibility instead becomes to make one. its important to say that if anyone isn't an optimist, or doesn't think about optimism like me, there's no personal failure, nor should anyone going through a rough time be blamed for it. if you're someone feeling like the world is cruel, and how could you not with the ongoing g-nocide in Gaza, in the Congo, across all the world, you are honestly completely right. and it's okay to not be okay because of how messed up this world can be at times.
