Your friend isn't 'driving' the boat. The helmsman doesn't just randomly decide to turn. The whole crew are required to turn the boat. It's coordinated by command. Plus there isn't God awful music blasting in the background.

Yep, there's the helmsman, but with these boats the trim of the sail is partially covered by a crewman on a computer finding the perfect angle for the sail relative to the wind, and all the other crew who have to be ready to move to raise and lower the hydrofoils on either side, or to run across to maintain balance.

Whoever the social media director is for SailGP is needs to chill. Between the crazy over the top editing of all of the media surrounding the races, and the absolutely ridiculous commentators (particularly the American commentators, the British ones are fine) its getting really obnoxious. Its hard to turn people on to an exciting foil catamaran racing series when this is the type of content they find when they look into it.
