I grew up in a textile town, she wasn't kidding when she said that all that knotting had to be done by hand, but that's an understatement, a whole lot of other tasks also had to be done.

Very interesting. I used to work in textiles before the industry left my area. Those automatic winding machines at the final stage in this video are actually splicing the ends of the yarn together, not knotting them. This ingenious process uses air pressure to blow the fibres through each other. The older types of automatic winding machines were, however, fitted with knotters. They tie the 'fisherman's knot'. I still have one of those mechanical knotting heads in my garden shed. I retained it as a keepsake when the mill closed down.

this is how most of videos explain how Cotton becomes a string 1:45...." so you get a cotton ball and you put it in this machine and then some magic gobly gobly happens and then you get the string.

Yea... I'm still confused about how the cotton fiber magically turns into string. Don't get it

Friction. The fibers are lined up and twisted around each other so that the friction between the fibers holds everything together. To get a better sense of how this is possible, look up the phone book trick where the pages are interleaved. Think Mythbusters did a thing about it. Same principle :D
@michaelmorrison4201
@michaelmorrison4201 4 жыл бұрын
@@niamhoconnor8986 huh, I did see that phone book trick! So they are all just inches long each but when they're twisted they get stuck like the pages... that's honestly the best explanation I ever heard for it! I'm still impressed with how everything is stuck together... now on to how thread count works... haha thanks

For decades before the Ring Frame became popular, Cotton Yarn was spun on Mules, but of the hundreds of thousand such machines once in use, only one is still able to spin at full production speed - see here:- kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqjPmYx4f5dng5I

The whole process takes 48hrs? this seems like its being overprocessed & the cotton yarn ends up losing some of its great natural characteristics such as looks, texture, & feel qualities before the dyeing coloring process because its being put through TOO MUCH mechanical unnecessary over processing!! No wonder cotton yarn is so expensive! & wish for a company out there that makes cotton yarn without all this overprocessization.

The spinning wheel was mist likely invented in Islamic world as ancient illustration recovered from Baghdad shows it's use by 1030. Evidence also point use of spinning wheel in 1090 in China. It was later spread to India so definitely not invented in India.
