Fire trucks have the easiest lives of any heavy trucks. Compared to other applications for trucks ie gravel trucks garbage trucks etc fire trucks are pampered pussies!

Very nice video. When your department decided to invest in a new truck, did you solicit ideas and input from every member of the department? I'm curious as to the internal process of figuring out what you needed, what you wanted and what you could afford in a new truck.

Great Questions: Major considerations in the design of a new fire apparatus are community need, industry standards and firefighter feedback. Fire apparatus are built to a buyer’s specifications. You can design fire apparatus with different length ladders, pump sizes, etc. to meet the needs of a community. Most of Allen’s structures are single family residential properties. Our apparatus have historically reflected the pump capacity and hose layouts needed to combat a fire in these types of structures. As Allen has grown, the features of our fire apparatus have evolved with the community (bigger buildings mean a need for bigger pumps and longer ladders). National standards, such as those developed by the NFPA and ISO, also dictate features of fire apparatus. Apparatus manufacturers and buyers follow these to insure a quality product is designed and built. We are often, but not always, able to fulfill the requests of our firefighters in the apparatus design. On our latest fire engine, our firefighters requested a specific type of siren, a rapid deployment hose reel, and slightly more space in the cab for their gear. Our strategy has been to incrementally improve our design with each new fire apparatus. We use the most resent design as the basis and incorporate new features and lessons learned from others to make each one better than the last. Fire apparatus are expensive investments in our community’s safety. Having fire apparatus with specific sized pumps, ladders, etc. helped Allen to achieve an ISO Rating of 2 (top 1% in the county). This rating is used by many property insurance companies when establishing insurance rates for a community. While every insurance provider differs, a better rating typically equates to a better insurance rate. I hope this answered your questions. Thanks for watching the video. Allen Fire Chief Bill Hawley

3:29 Awesome Truck!!! I have a question, was that training/testing facility at the time stamp I posted at Pierce's mfr plant or was it a training academy for the local fire dept in Pierce's area?? Lastly, I like how you guys have a small tax on your FADO(Fire Apparatus Driver Operator) hitting curbs with the apparatus & they need to buy the ice cream.....Cool Idea, I LOVE IT. This is super cool, but it seems like from a manufacturing standpoint it is a very inefficient way to build a vehicle. Do you really need 100,000 options on a fire trucks? Don’t 90% of all fire trucks serve the same purpose?
