I used to work as a technician for a fire truck refurbishment facility. We did everything, Pearce, American LeFrance, Oshkosh, even some Military crash trucks (also made by Oshkosh). I can safely say, you can not imagine the amount of wiring and computer control some of these modern trucks have. It's mind boggling.

I'd trade one of those overprice computer on wheels junk for an old Mack anytime!.Seen those old Mack model B in action 24 hrs a day non stop for a week to empty a long tunnel that had flush flood in Montreal in the 1980's.Kenworth pumpers were no match for that kind of work!

I work for Oshkosh Corporation. I used to assemble the chassis for the Striker and the military vehicles we build (HEMTT, MATV, FMTV, HET, etc.) A lot of the main wiring harnesses run along the inside of the frame so if an issue were to arise it's not a fun fix.

Fire trucks are red because bricks are red too. Two plus two is four, and four times three is twelve. Twelve inches in a ruler. Queen Elizabeth was a ruler, she ruled the seas. The seas have fish, the fish have fins, the Finns fought the Russians, the Russians are red, and fire trucks are always rushin'. That's why fire trucks are red.

As a volunteer fireman my self in NYS I would like to make a few notes one the Truck @ 5:15 is not a ladder truck it is called a Quint it already has a hose running up the ladder, second thing the the the main trucks we use the most in my experience are Tankers, pumpers, and ladder trucks/Quints or Bucket trucks it depends on the apparatus . I could go into more detail but I feel that those are the most important ones on the fire ground. other than the firemen them selfs. besides that this video is really informational with some variances between the country's and states. Thanks for the vid keep it up.

As a firefighter I would like to point out that while I personally have never heard a pumper referred to as a wagon, they are usually reffered to as engines. At least in my area. A pumper is an engine, An Ariel ladder with no platform is a ladder truck, A ladder truck with a bucket or platform on the end of the ladder is a tower truck And most engines are capable of drafting, or pulling water out of a lake or stream. Tanker trucks are more suited for wild land firefighting just because they can carry significantly more water. All that being said there was a lot of fantastic info in here about the history of the trucks. Great video.

4:52 That 5,000 gallon truck is not a pumper. It is technically a tanker. Usually at that size, they don't pump, but act as giant reservoirs used for forest fire or rural operations. One thing that you might find interesting is what is known as a "tender taskforce" tenders are "pumpers" (we use the term engines) that have a large capacity (ours had about 2,000 gallons) and a dump valve (which ours could dump the entire 2,000 gallon tank out of a chute in a minute). Now you might ask, "for what purpose would there be to dump water on the ground like that?" They often carry portable ponds. IN rural areas with large fires needing extended operations, a team will setup at a hydrant. The tender comes to fill at the hydrant, and then trucks the water to the scene. It's dumped in a large, framed, essentially nylon bag called a portable pond. From this pond, water is drafted into an engine and fed to attack lines. Essentially, if there is no body of water nearby, and no hydrant, you bring the water to you. Edit: saw you included the tender... was seconds off.

I love fire trucks too! I think most boys in their childhood loved them too! What was not to like, they were big, red, made all kinds of sounds on their way out to a call and could send off high powered streams of water to quell fires. Not to mentions, that fire fighters, in their kit are modern day knights. 🙂👍

I still question how you confused Rainhill Trials Competitor Novelty for a fire pump. Keep in mind I could find record of the machines being built, but needless to say they don't exactly bear a striking resemblance to Braithwaite's primary achievement . I should mention a key issue in that Novelty was, in fact, self propelled
