Fabytendo Wallace and gromit where made out of plasticine, which is very similar to play doh. Although nowadays aardman have got a lot more sophisticated with their models.

Fabtendo when i was like 4 i had no Idea how they did it so i asked my dad and when he said they were out of clay i imagined them made of clay but as big as humans for some reason so i was so scared that a human out of clay would come into my room at night.

Photoshop, frame by frame

Definitely not frame by frame and photoshop is not necessary. Simply put, the animator took a shot of the scene without the puppet or rig in the shot. During post production, the editor will layer the animated footage over the image of the set without the puppet and essentially erase the parts of the footage that feature unwanted riggings or supports. This is called compositing.
