I love these, and have considered getting one a few times. What has turned me away from it is picturing luggage handlers at an ariport....well, handling. I'm sure it can handle the abuse they'd offer, but in reality if they ever lost it or stole it, the insurance airlines offer for lost and stolen bags wouldn't likely cover the cost of it suitcase, let alone the contents. I might still talk myself into one yet, but it'd be for road trips and sitting at the foot end of my bed, because it is a beautiful suitcase, and a work of art in itself.

I have a question, what does the larger suitcase weigh empty? This is a factor these days with the airlines, given that they have some pretty stringent weight requirements for bags unless you fly first class.

Frequent flyer here, 100k miles a year. My so called bad plastic suitcase has lasted me 5+ years, ~300 flights, 700k miles, and 9 countries! The saddleback would be ruined after the average baggage handler abuses it. Not to mention the times they've dropped my (waterproof) suitcase in rain puddles or left it on the baggage rack during a storm. I like saddleback, but the waterproof plastic suitcase is the better buy for frequent flyers.

800 flights / 12 years = 67 flights per year -or- over one per week for decade plus!!! I know the brand SBL is top tier expensive, I guess a lot goes to airfare, lodging, dining... I work a humble job and must save for a very long time for a SBL product. I simply cannot imagine the total overall cost of that much travel. No point in me imagining, never going to happen.

Empircally, yeah this thing is a total fail. Too heavy, too expensive, too rigid, too risky (for theft). Unfortunately this is both a bad item for both the customer and Saddleback. I love lifetime warranties, but the only real use I can see for it is as a foot locker in a suburban bedroom.

Part of good product design is considering usability and practicality for the consumer. Dave doesn't do that with his products, and in fact this video shows that he mocks practicality. Why not engineer something lighter? use modern metals that are stronger and lighter than the steel he uses. How about different sized straps so that they aren't all made for 7 foot tall customers that add unnecessary weight? How about do something AMAZING and create wheels for Saddleback Luggage that don't break! Dave ignores usability for the sake of style and durability.
