I agree .Wouldn't it be time and cost effective to just tie a ribbon around it?
@craigester1449 Жыл бұрын
@@letter1967 Lack of skilled labor is the problem. A real hat band is actually not tied either, it's sewn together by hand to look like an ideal bow. The ribbon is also held onto a hat by small stitches spaced apart by a few inches. It's not hard and I could train a reasonably competent person to do it in a few hours (assuming they have no hand sewing experience) but even that is too much to ask for nowadays. All good hats are made on a small-scale by a hatter, either selling the hats under their own name or the name of their company. Only a few larger companies are still respectable and they're all based in London.

Hot glue is the quick and easy fix - back in the day it was all stitched; the liner was hand stitched in between the felt from the inside so that it wouldn't be visible from the outside. Obviously, hot glue is much quicker and easier, but won't be as durable for a daily hat - we're not living 100 years ago when it was a daily fashion piece. Good day!

Of course, back in the day, mercury was also part of the process of hat making. Being around all those mercury vapors made hatters of that era go bonkers, which is where the term "mad as a hatter" comes from.

I disagree in the term "weird hats", they are traditional styles of means headwear. I do agree these specific ones appear to be more of a "costume quality" depicted in this episode and not a high quality men's hat that are meant to last a lifetime. Men's headwear, and women's for that matter, are much less commonly worn then they were say pre-WWII and took another big dive in the 60's and the trend of men not wearing a hat has never recovered, yet, this however does not make them weird. There are still occasions where traditional men's headwear is worn. Top hats are worn while outside with both White tie and Morning dress. Royal Ascot is certainly an occasion in the UK where a Top Hat is mandatory when one is within the Royal Enclosure and sometimes worn within the other areas too when morning dress is worn. Bowlers can be worn with any men's suit, although they are just not commonly worn and have been largely replaced by Homburg or more commonly a Fedora for those who do wear hats.

I was a hat manufacturer for many years........the "string" used to tie the brim down to the aluminum hat die is called the blocking cord, and it's a specific cord for this purpose........production factories use a rounding machine to trim the excess felt from the welt......the machine is operated by a separate operator.......I've never seen a factory where the blockers trim the welt ,and certainly not by scissors......as shown in this video it's a two step process trimming the welt........in reality the blockers are moving down a line of stampers blocking the hats........as soon as they get to the end or last stamper, they go back to the first stamper, remove the hat, and set up another one......then they move to the next stamper and do the same thing......usually 2 men for each line of 12 stampers.......they are not standing around or trimming the welts........the hats are then brought to the rounding machine and in one pass the entire welt is trimmed......I used to operating the rounding machine as it was my favorite machine whether rounding felts or straws........

After my dermatologist removed some skin cancer from my bald head leaving my with a parted pate I started wearing hats. None to kean on the ubiquitous baseball cap I delved into the world of felt hats. My first purchase was a homburg but it was way too dressy. I decided on two nineteenth century numbers. The bowler (derby) and the porkpie as in Walter White's hat on Breaking Bad. I was recently in my doctor's office waiting room when an older lady told me that I looked dapper. I took that as a compliment. Tada

Judging by the way original bowlers were made, these modern hot glue creations would never stand up. Hot glue? I had never been able to get anything to sick with hot glue for very long. Anyway... It was said that originally you were supposed to be able to stomp on a bowler and not have it mishape, for it was a hard hat of the working class, before there were any hard hats around.
