Intolwane and Umgugudu are two traditional remedies widely used in Southern Africa to treat various ailments and human diseases. Growing up, uMagriza (my grandmother) introduced us to these herbs as a way of improving our health and vitality. The purpose of this video is to show you how the two herbs are prepared; from the extraction of the roots right up to the consumption stage.

About Magriza Made Me Cook:
» Magriza is slang for uGogo (Grandmother in isiNdebele) and the name of the show is derived from Prince's inspiration for falling in love with cooking; his grandmother. The goal of MMMC is to document and serve Africa's diverse food culture, one dish at a time. We believe that Africa has got unique meals that ought to be talked about, and most importantly, cooked consistently. We believe in the values of Ubuntu, Respect, Creativity and Minimalism.

I recently visited home and prepared myself intolwani to take with me. I carried intolwani crushed but not in powder form. Used a blender to crush it into powder form in an enclosed area. I got the powder l wanted, but in the evening l was not well at all. My body temperature increased. I was sneezing and coughing with flue like symptoms. All this was caused by intolwani powder I inhaled during the preparation process. So to those interested to prepare this stuff, prepare it outdoors.

I watched & liked your video so off I went and found some on eBay here in UK. I put one teaspoon in black tea first thing in the morning I don’t eat breakfast. After two sips it opened my bowels. Oh here we go I thought happy days it’s doing something. An hour later I was throwing up fortunately I don’t eat breakfast otherwise what a mess that would have been. Lots of water came up ndorani (reddish) coloured water. Is it supposed to do that? Where did I go wrong?

The preservation method with African cultures has always been there like that the trees should not be cut down. What we need to do is preserve the knowledge and systems of utilising these herbs.
