Did he say backwash only once a year? Chemistry isn't right. You don't have sodium atoms wandering around by themselves.

The sodium combines with hydrogen and oxygen to form Sodium Hydroxide (which increases pool ph). When you add Muratic Acid (hydrochloric acid), the Sodium Hydroxide becomes Salt and Water.

This video's chemical description of how the cell works is wrong. A salt water chlorine generator does not separate molecules of NaCl. NaCl is a crystalline solid without discrete molecules. It dissolves into separate Na+ and Cl- ions when put in water-- no electrolytic process required. The free chloride ions are oxidized to Cl2 (chlorine gas) at the anode of the cell. The Na+ are basically irrelevant, NaCl is just a vehicle to obtain sufficient concentration of chloride ions.
