In this video I show how I made a simple flexible screwdriver to adjust the mixture screws on my Honda ST1100 pan European. The mixture screws can not be accessed with a conventional straight screwdriver.

That really is genius at work. The number of times I’ve burned my fingers, trying to adjust various screws on multi carburettor bikes while it’s running. Only thing that’s worse I suppose is if you can’t get to the screws at all when the thing is all built up! This tool should be in the menu of pieces that an apprentice should be invited to make. Like Allens own three legged puller, 45 years old & still giving good service.

Allen is a three dimensional thinker. Always an uncommon ability but today’s CAD systems have made it near extinct. It’s a big part of why cars and bikes are so hard to maintain. Nobody thinks about these “unimportant” matters.

There are a few fairly expensive right angle screwdrivers on the market that use nifty little pinion gearboxes to solve this problem. But this solution is a lot better. Mine is going to have a hardened and blued bit with radiused shoulders!! You can drag the lad out of Rolls Royce, but you can never erase the advice of my fitting instructor Harry Kite - who’s very first job at the Derby chassis factory was deburring silver ladies. Thank you for sharing Allen. You always inspire me.

I’ve a very similar tool I purchased back in the early -80’s. Was probably bought from Mac Tools. It is approximately a 60 degree bend, with a 1/4” drive end, to be able to interchange bits. It was a necessity at the time, to adjust idle mixture on 2.2L Chrysler electronic carburetor. I’ve found many other occasions to employ it in the succeeding decades, including aircraft work, to start difficult to reach fasteners.

Well, I went the manufactured way. Bought similar but a bit longer from my snap on dealer back in the early 70s. Still have it. But mine has a hex end so various bits could be added. The one for a carb screw had an outer shield so that the but would not slide off. But good on you for making this usefull tool.

Hi Allan came across you on the Motorbike show with Henry and friends, and have been binge watching all your video's, wow very talented mate great material and beautiful bikes, you deserve your own TV show as pretty sure your the one with the know how and skills, i noticed that you have some great looking vintage and modern helmets and jackets i bet you could do a whole show on those would be very interesting specially with the steve McQueen leather jacket, or maybe you could share a little info when you go to get your gear before your test rides, I am a biker just got back into it in june 2022 after 10 years out, bought a 03 bmw r1150rt to hopefully revisit Paris and the Eiffel Tower again last there on a X Police Bike r100 30+ years ago, PS my old stomping ground reading berks not a million miles from you, now live in Cambridgeshire, keep up the great content mate and if i,m ever over your way would love to pop in for a cuppa and one of Tracy's cup cakes all the best and stay safe steve

As a kid I'd use rubber tube, nicked from dad's labs at the MinOfAg, to provide flexible coupling - with a sawn-off screwdriver end in it. The same tube could be used directly on nuts and screws that were not too tight.
