Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced plans to clean up Fukushima, the site of a massive 2011 nuclear disaster, and move former residents back by spring 2017. But not everyone wants to go back.
“It’s not possible in my lifetime,” Katsutaka Idogawa, former mayor of Futaba Prefecture, told VICE News correspondent Isobel Yeung. “The radiation doesn’t go away that easily.”
Radioactive materials remain hazardous for hundreds of years, but just five years have passed since the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. Japan’s effort to clean up more than 600 square miles is estimated to cost the government over $180 billion.

That $180 Billion figure is not accurate - because they haven't factored in the medical bills of all the people they've paid BIG BUCKS to make themselves sick with cancer performing a fake move the mess around clean up job. The Russians did what has to be done- abandon the area. It's lost. It's WHY we can't have nuclear power like this. There Must be better ways. The risk is too great. It's gone into our Pacific Ocean and is affecting all life on earth. It will change the course of life on earth. It is huge. It's bigger than Chernobyl. It's irreparable. We are living in a new age. It's a toxic one.

I've been to Japan multiple times and see how they "enforced" it. If you stay in Japan long enough you will see tiny school children walking around with trash bag. The children are taught from very young age (as soon as they enter kindergarten) to carry bag and keep trash in there and not to litter. So it's ingrained in the culture. I have friends that live in Japan, and they told me that is very true. Their kids would be taught to keep things cleanly (the kids do weekly clean up of their school, instead of having else do it). So yes they just grow up like that

Fukushima didn't see nearly the same level of meltdown. The catastrophe is way overhyped. It is estimated that a resident of Fukushima will receive 10.000 microsieverts more in their lifetime because of it. In comparison, one ct-scan gives you 7.000 microsieverts and smoking gives you 160.000 microsieverts a year. Also, the current level of radiation in Fukushima is lower than the natural level some places. source: I'm a physicist or you can watch Veritasium's video or read a Wikipedia page.

Nuclear energy is save as long as you don't build the power plants in places where tsunami's or earthquakes happen alot *cough* Japan *cough*
@psyantologist
@psyantologist 7 жыл бұрын
It is very shortsighted to consider nuclear energy "safe", anywhere. It's an energy source that has you ending up with contaminated waste material that needs to be stored _safely_ for more than tens of thousands of years, next to fuel rods including the materials used to built the reactors and near-by facilities. It is foolish to assume that no accidents will happen, ever - yet restricting the scope for accidents on natural disasters alone is just as foolish.

+Wont Tell I agree, why go nuclear when there are so many natural & genuinely safe options available to us? There is zero need for nuclear power in this day & age.
@psyantologist
@psyantologist 7 жыл бұрын
a boy The safest option we could do today is to stop wasting energy like madmen. Every megawatt we don't use is one megawatt we don't have to produce. There are countries that heavily rely on nuclear - like France. Willful dependance. France fights wars over their supply of nuclear material because keeping the lights on at night indeed is a matter of national security for them and they cannot afford to care that the raw materials technically belong to someone else. If we as societes put a fraction of the subsidies for nuclear into research for proper energy storage and another fraction of it into research of nuclear fusion, we'd be golden. Yet while we idle around, the companies who earn most of their money with fossile fuels stash away the patents that the future of our energy depends on, to squeeze the very last dime out of a dying system with no regard to the ecological implications. We're most efficient at fucking shit up and striving to get better and better at it.
@winnielovestrash2221
@winnielovestrash2221 7 жыл бұрын
+Wont Tell I disagree that simply using less energy is the safest option long term, but I do see how that could help short term. In Chile recently their solar energy industry boomed & they had so much energy they were giving it away. It's funny, citizens were receiving electricity for FREE & many people threw a fit because it could be seen as bad for the market & economy. (read: bad for a handful of companies & investors) the majority of the country only benefited yet people still couldn't enjoy it for such frivolous reasons The switch to renewable clean energy is necessary and putting it off for so long will cause unneeded pain & expenses. I think investments into solar, hydro, wind, biomass, & geothermal energy are our best bets. It's cheaper, it's renewable, it's clean, & it's plentiful. It would leave everyone happy & healthy... besides nonrenewable energy based companies of course. That'll be the end of an era for them. They're putting it off for as long as they can.

Sergey Bebenin The situation in Ukraine is a result of a coup, facilitated by the west. The current government of Ukraine was openly hostile in rhetorics towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians. The trade treaties offered to the pre-coup Ukrainian government would have hurt Ukraine in oder to hurt the Russian economy more, so the government refusing these had to go. Cutting off Russia from it's naval ports was unacceptable for them - and the west knew that very well. It's one provocation after the other and Russia gets blamed for responding. There's no good sides there, anywhere, unless we also count the politically unrepresented civilians who just want to live in peace with all their neighbors. Five years of bombing Syria with NATO airplanes and then hardly a year of Russian bombardments, a year that marked the end of ISIS' successes, and suddenly bombs are bad because they kill the "moderate rebels" which even the west considers "terrorists" once they step over the borders of Syria into a different county - but while they're in Syria, they're considered to be fighting _the good fight_, even if they side with al Nusra front and the like and often are virtually indistinguishable from them in ideology. The hypocrisy of the media is appalling. The US, its European, Turkish and Middle Eastern/Arabic allies bombed their fair share of hospitals, bridges and civilians and it's their support of the "moderates" that keeps the suffering going. Assad is a dictator and dissidents and dissident suspects get imprisoned and tortured. But that's been the case for the better part of a century, quite a lot of the time under French supervision. Nothing new here. All that is new are plans for gas pipelines.

I agree. Also with the respirators the workers in this video seemed to be using would be letting stuff in for sure since they are not positive pressure (pressurized, e.g air can) systems, thus allowing you to ingest the actual nasty stuff. I can imagine raking leaves would lift up a really nice dust cloud of stuff with alpha-emitters, which are not to be breathed.. @EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 7 жыл бұрын
well actually the radiation emmited was way lower than say the radiation typically found in radioactive waste which would take about 10,000 years to be safe. There's something called a 'half-life' meaning that's how much time these particular molecules take to reduce their radiation output by half. So lets assume that substance a and b were both identical but i had 1,000,000 times more of substance a. It would thus take substace a 20 times longer to fall within safe levels. The radiation at fukishima was spread over a large area and very little was actually ejected in the explosions whereas radioactive waste is contained in one space in high quantities. Do you see how the fukishima radiation could potentially disperse in a few decades whereas radioactive waste would take millenia? Even if they are the same substance? Its an easy mistake to make, but I'm telling you, in 50 years, fukishima will be at safe levels of radiation.

I was there near Tokyo when the reactor in Fukushima went off. There was a large storm soon after in the air and it was raining hard and it was very windy. But since I left japan the country has been doing and trying its best to clean up this mistake. I mean these streets are cleaner then some of the city’s here in the states 😅😂.
