One thing that distinguishes the Tucker Carlsons and JD Vances of today from their predecessors is a lack of authenticity. I was never a fan of Buckley, however, there was no point where I could not figure out where he stood. He was nothing, if not consistent. I was raised Catholic and even went to a catholic preschool. I’m ex catholic now and have been for awhile. The one thing I can say about Catholicism is they at least gave me a more rounded out education (would’ve benefited and avoided so much pain and suffering if they would’ve given me a proper shame free sex education though). They actually taught us about other religions and to respect them and the version of the Bible I was taught was not fire and brimstone shit. Jesus was a cool dude. Anyways, I’ve noticed Catholics becoming less tolerant though. I got immediately kicked out of a very popular catholic subreddit because I tried advocating for trans people. Also my crazy right wing side of the family has been falling off the deep end and becoming more and more evangelical-like. Just my two cents.

You mentioned two things related to these conversions: the genuine religious sentiment, but also the incentive of power. JT, on Second Thought, at one point made a comment I found insightful on Christian dominionism. He said something like, "They're Christianity fan-boys." The power is directed towards a particular conservative social order, and Christianity (Catholicism, in this case) readily presents an image of that order. These people don't care about the filioque or the Nestorian controversy. They care that there's an order of men over women in the home and in society. Conservative churches, especially conservative Catholic groups, provide an image of that, and an intellectual framework that supports it. They also contain the political muscle to move the needle.

I'm not an expert on any of this - sorry this ended up being a long comment. But I just thought I'd suggest what I think, such as it is. I don't know how important meat-coma man, JB Peterson is, to Conservative Politics today. But, he did produce a cybernetics paper on 'Psychological Entropy' a while back (which I think ironically is related to the same concept from the USSR). In that paper I think he introduces a 'begging the question' bias with the way he talks about 'Goal Orientated Approaches' - which, of course, the more conservative those goals the more successful they are at being achieved. However, I did basically use Peterson to learn about Marxist Economics through another example he has discussed called the 80:20 Rule or Pareto Rule of Wealth Inequality - 80% of the wealth is owned by 20% of the people. It just so happened I had learnt a bit about Network Theory and I knew the 80:20 Rule correlated with the 'Degrees of Separation' in the world: 1 = 1/Pareto Index + 1/Degrees of Separation. Where the 80:20 Rule gives 7.212 = ln(0.2)/ln(1 - 0.2) i.e. 80% of the world's wealth (1 - 0.2) is in the hands of 20% of the world's population (0.2), and Degrees of Separation gives 7.212 = ln(8 Billion)/ln(23.60655 average contacts per person) i.e. each person in the world on average is separated from each other by about 7 contacts. This gives y = 8 Billion.e^(ln(x).(1/7.212)), which tells you the area under the Pareto Curve, where the total area is the total wealth - but this area also tells you the total connections between people in the world, of which the average is 23.60655. If x = 20% of 8 Billion, then the area under the curve is 80% of the total area or wealth. I've heard people criticise Marxism by saying it only works if everyone makes the same product. Well the product in question here is 'people connections', which we can call 'variable capital' (Marx's Term), of which the average 'variable capital' is 23.60655. But potentially each person could have 8 Billion connections. The very wealthiest person does have 8 Billion connections to everyone using this Pareto Method. So it is then 'Constant Capital' (Marx's term again) that makes up the remaining connections - basically machine connections controlling people a bit like the Covid app reduced contacts between people. I find maths a nightmare, but this seems pretty simple. Been also looking at probability and statistics lately - basically gambling, which seems an entry route into conservative politics. A typical example that comes up is probability distributions for measuring 'customers per hour' or 'number of events' (possion distribution - gives a normal distribution curve) and 'hours per customer or 'gaps between events' (exponential distribution - basically gives a pareto curve again and the formulas for each are basically the same y = e^-(gap between event.average number of events) versus y = e^(ln(person in world).[1/average degrees of separation]), just replace 'time' and 'event' for 'person' and 'connections'). I don't know whether a 'normal distribution' is what should be aimed for in terms of wealth distribution because it would be fairer than a 'pareto distribution'. But it does seem odd that measuring the 'number of events' produces a normal curve compared with 'gaps between events' for a pareto type curve. However, maybe it does make sense philosophically if an 'event' is like an idealistic 'spectacle', with the 'gaps between events' being like the material world we are being distracted from? massive idk.
