The thing that a lot of people tend to overlook with Joey and his deck is that Joey is poor. Most of his cards are like, bottom of the barrel cards that most duelists would never consider using. Like all the luck effects, most people scold him for "relying on luck" but it's important to note that Joey often relies on luck because he can't afford better cards that do guaranteed things. He doesn't wield the power of fate, he can't see the future, or anything like that. But he also realizes that it takes skill to play the right card at the right time. (Literally a quote from I believe his second duel against mai in the orichalcos arc) He develops a specific kind of skill BECAUSE of his luck cards. Like you said with his duel against espa roba, he might be able to predict his actions, but he can't predict the outcome. Because most duelists forgo the potential for a more powerful outcome by using more reliable cards, Joey is able to subvert everyone else's expectations of how the duel should go. Basically, Joey is the goat lol
@otterfire4712Ай бұрын
Joey actually learns and tries to rely less on luck in Battle City and you can see this with him slowly phasing out luck based cards the further into the tournament.
@snowboundwhale6860Ай бұрын
It's also worth mention that some of those luck cards like the dice are in fact crazy and the reason people would snub them is because they don't like the idea of low rolling, even when low roll Skull Dice is just Shrink, and Graceful Dice only works with low ATK monsters which most duellists probably avoid, so most have already written them off as pack filler. The printed dice only increase/ decrease by 100x the die roll, but the story versions multiply/ divide the target's ATK by the die roll which is insane. Iirc we almost never see Skull Dice roll above a 2 because of that.

Another interesting parallel is the fact that in the manga it’s shown that his dad is an alcoholic gambler and this adds another layer to Joey relying on a luck based play style. He resents his dad for his gambling yet he himself technically gambles with some of the greatest odds in history.

The greatest thing about Joey Wheeler is that he doesn't have destiny on his side. Kaiba, Yugi, Ishizu, Marik, all of them have destinies attached to them. Not Joey. Joey carves his path through the stone tablets that form the basis of this game, while most other successful duelists walk through a predetermined path. I feel like if Joey managed to pull through and declare the attack before collapsing, he would've broken destiny with no Millennium Item like Kaiba or supernatural abilities like Atem. A simple man that sat down with god across the table, looked him at the eyes, got the slap of a lifetime and decided to slap back harder. Honestly? Could totally see that, somehow, he would be able to recite Ra's chant and successfully summon him, no matter if he won or lost that fight.

I really like your analysis. What you saw in Joey resonated with me. One detail I want to add to your thoughts, that in my opinion really shows Joey's commitment to his values and his growth as a person, is that he actually built a strategy around the randomness of certain cards in his duel vs Esper Roba. At that moment in the show, we get to see how far Joey has come from the novice duelist of the beginning. He used to like these cards because of their powerful effects, disregarding the risks that came with them, and to play them rashly without really understanding the implications. But against Esper Roba, he showed a much deeper understanding of the game by turning what would normally be his cards' downsides into a core strategy capable of winning. He not only understood his opponent had a trick he could not expose, but he also realized how to counter it and organized an entire strategy dedicated to achieving that goal. That is such great character development! This show's writing was incredible.

I just wanted to give a slight correction to the shadow game rules against Yami Marik. The rules of the game was that whenever a monster was put onto the field they would be tethered to the duelist (scapegoat excluded cause they are tokens) and any sort of pain inflicted to the monster including that attacks that would destory them was inflicted to the duelest as well. So everytime drillago destroyed a monster Joey felt like he was also being pierced by that drill and he felt the same searing godly flames that destroyed his Gilferd.
@comicfan3133Ай бұрын
What also impresses me is how he changed in the beginning of the manga. At first he was more of a bully and also targetted yugi and stole one puzzle piece. But when yugi not only forgave him but also defended him he made acomplete 180 degree turn. He saw his flaws and tried to correct him by staying with yugi. And also always keeping yugis safety in mind, when his past caught up to him. This harsh upringing also made him a beast outside of duels which can be seen for example in the death-t games.
@KnightFerrocousАй бұрын
I recently read the manga and while Joey was already my favorite character in Yugioh it really made me appreciate him more. In those chapters that never were in the English anime he really grows from a bully who is lashing out for his bad lot in life after being left alone with his alcoholic father when his parents divorced to someone who earnestly cares about his friends. And then as the series goes on he proves how great he is over and over by being the only normal human who spits in the face of the supernatural and gods just to help his friends out. I feel like the shitting on Joey's luck more comes from the filler arcs like the Waking the Dragons arc where he pulls out insane luck over and over because he's still mostly using his not very good Battle City deck and he needs the luck to win against the power creep. If they had retrained some of his staples like Alligator Sword maybe he wouldn't have had to cheat the dice so often.

I remember playing yugioh with my friends back in the early 2000s. I had a friend who had access to a lot of powerful cards and he gave, sold, and traded me quite a few of them. The deck that I put together with these was very srrong for the time, so much so that i probably had sonethibg like like a 70-90% winrate with my regular group. I decided to shelve my original deck and build a new one full of gambling mechanics, weak cards with weird effects, or strong cards with equally terrible drawbacks. The new deck was very heavily inspired by Joey Wheeler and the way he dueled, and it was a ton of fun. My winrate definitely went down, but it was worth it since my group was having a lot more fun then. Eventually the rest of my group were able to build their decks up to be more and more competitive and i decided to take my old deck off the shelf and combined the old and the new together into even more powerful, though I'm sure it wouldnt stand a chance against the kind of stuff that's in the game these days, lol.

what I like about Joey is that he's "The Odd Man Out" who often times plays against either cheating or much higher skill opponents but manages to asspull wins using cards who's outcomes are never predictable from one time to the next, this removes a significant edge from his opponents in the consistency they presume a typical duelist would have. everone knows Weevil Undderwood's play is to go for his Perfectly Ultimate Greatmoth, Everyone expects Kaiba to asspull Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon into play by turn 4 and everyone knows Aten will asspull monster reborn sometime after his Dark Magician gets hit with removal/destroyed. With Joey, you know he's goign to pull Scapegoats, his dice cards, his Spider, Time Wizard and Baby Dragon and maybe Jinzo if he didnt forget to put it in his deck. but out of all of these, 4 cards will never work twice the same way in different duels. consistency trump potential, but only when the opponent also plays with the same idea. Joey is all-in on potential, not consistency, which is why he's the God-Father of Games!

Given how much it seems everyone wanted Joey to win his duel with Marik, I'd say this sounds more like a fan written retcon of the series that somebody came up with just to have the satisfaction of seeing it come to fruition in the end. I myself, however, never believed that Joey was supposed to win against Marik and don't feel he was robbed of a victory because of this: sure, Joey managed to come extremely close to winning here, but I always felt that he ultimately had to lose, not just to establish Marik as a more credible threat and unhinged villain, but also because narratively, it wouldn't make sense. Joey winning that duel would probably not have helped to redeem Marik because his beef is specifically with the Pharoah, which in turn would probably cause Marik to go even more insane and throw a fit of rage, possibly even sending Joey to the shadow realm after losing and refusing to give up the Winged Dragon of Ra in his pettiness -- I can 100% see Marik acting that way if he were to lose. Speaking of Ra, I don't think that Joey would have been able to control it if he put the card in his deck: only those with ties to ancient Egypt can use the power of the Egyptian God cards -- this is consistently shown time and again in the series -- and Ra in particular seems to be ESPECIALLY choosy about who it deems worthy enough to weild it's power, given the need to both recite a chant to summon it, as well as having been shown to strike down those who would play a fake copy of it in the case of Odion specifically -- I also don't think Joey would have any luck trying to decipher the text on Ra, either. The long and short of it is that Joey was never supposed to win that duel, in my opinion: is it a potentially fun headcanon that could offer an interesting "what if?" scenario had he actually won? Yeah, sure. Does it make sense narratively? No, not really: it was established to be the duty of Yugi and Atem to beat Marik, get their hands on all 3 Egyptian God cards, and help him to overcome the darkness in his own heart by getting him to finally let go of his grudge he was holding onto all these years, and this is without mentioning that Yugi is the protagonist of the series, thus giving him the greatest importance of any character at the end of the day

I've come to realize Joey duels a lot of cheaters like Mai, Weevil, Espa Roba, Marik, Odian and Bandit Keith His duel against BK is probably my favorite period

to be fair odian only cheat by pretending to be marik which not so much cheating.

Did you not watch the episode completely after he jumps off the cruise before making the video? lol Tea and Tristan threw a rope ladder for yugi and Joey like seconds after 😂

Oh yeah my bad 😂 From memory I knew Joey goes unconscious but then didn't remember how he got back on the boat. I meant to check but just got distracted with other stuff in the video and left that part in thinking there was just no explanation. Thanks for reminding me 👍

Idc what anyone says joey beat marik and it’s funny how it happened how the fact that marik won was because of his carelessness causing joey to feint in dub/die in original and that’s what decided the duel but joey was 1 move from winning just “attack”

I would argue that Joey's Luck based cards represent a key part of his character: He's the kind of guy to take chances and risky bets to get ahead. They don't always work out, but the fact he's willing to take that chance means he will go farther than anyone expects of him. Side Note: this is something that is missing from alot of modern Joey-themed cards. Its sad but I understand it: most chance cards aren't fun to play with/not actually good. Its a problem I run into when I theory crafting a modern version of his deck for a hypothetical reboot

I think it would be awesome if you covered Weevil In one of these videos, if you haven't already. But specifically the good that does exist in him. It's often times hard to see it, but he does have some good in him. I think it would have been amazing had he became one of the main protagonists. Regardless of whether he is a good or a bad guy, he never really gives up. He's all about getting back the glory that he once had. He does have the determination and the willpower

Jonouchi may not be the brightest or sharpest tool in the shed but the man is willing to stare down god himself if it means helping a brother out.

Joey is man formed from nothing. Divorced parents, forced to live away from his sister with his deadbeat dad, became a bully who knew nothing about any card game. And yet through Yugi, and the other friends he met by becoming a better person, he rose. His past is negligible now. He grew past it by learning how to duel properly and gaining a true resolve, whether it be for his sister’s eye surgery or just to better himself as a person. A man who rose from the ashes of nothing to become a true duelist. Is it any wonder how he was able to take Ra’s flames?

Joey Wheeler The Man Who Defied God

It is unclear how Joey Wheeler wins any of his duels. Orichalchos Mai defeated him off-screen without any effort.
@fandomking8939Ай бұрын
No, not even close to what actually happened.

Off-screen? What? That's not what happened. I think you confused Orichalcos Mai vs Joey and Orichalcos Mai vs Dartz.

Joey jumped intoma ocean in the middle of the night to get yugi's cards just to remind people the yugioh franchise has confermed sharks are a think and if you stop to think how cold a ocean gets at night it's crazzy Joey didn't die from Hyperthermia or wasn't attacked by a shark.😂 also the warmest ocean in the world have about 200 cases a year of people suffering from hyperthermia during the Dan and out out of the 200 of the cases about 30 die each year so it goes to show Joey is loyal willing to risk his life for his friends without a 2nd thought to his own safty bassicky Joey is bassicky disirves the MVP when it comes to best best friend of a yugioh mc. Also rember yugi beat Yamin a dead Pharoah weilding the power of gods and Joey has had yugi on the ropes when Yamin was In controol of yugis body showing how skilled Joey was just rember the Millennium puzzle ability it was know for was RNG Is manipulation and was vewed to be the strongest Mulanium item meaning most of yugis wins were due to cheating im sorry but useinb magic items to make a 2vs one in a dule and Manipulate RSG in the favor of the user and tamper with the opponents rng is messed up. All the Millennial puzzles had a mean to counter the effect in some way but the puzzle rng manipulator had zero means to counter and couldn't be blocked or cancled by other Millennium items. At the end of the day yugi/Yamin were the biggest cheaters in the entire yugioh animated franchise history and lets not forget yugi/yami breaking the rules thag were astonished in the anime like attacking the moon or useing card in a way that was not possible I'd even go as far to say yugis plot armor in reality my be the thickest out out of any anime mc
