In 1987, Christ dropped out of college and moved to New Jersey to join Glenn Danzig's band Samhain, which became the band Danzig later that same year. Upon his arrival in New Jersey, Christ would share an apartment with Samhain drummer London May, for whom Christ had performed his first band audition. Christ auditioned well, but it wasn't until leaving countless guitar solos on Glenn Danzig's answering machine that he was finally invited to join the band. When May left the band, Christ shared an apartment with new drummer Chuck Biscuits, where they came up with Christ's original stage name "John Von Christ", before it was shortened to avoid it clashing with bassist Eerie Von. Christ played guitar with Danzig from 1987 to July 1995, appearing on the albums Danzig, Lucifuge, How the Gods Kill and 4, and also the Thrall-Demonsweatlive EP. In 1990, Christ recorded guitar for the Samhain album Final Descent. Christ officially left Danzig on July 5, 1995, citing a breakdown in communication within the band as the reason behind his departure. During his time with Danzig, Christ's main guitar was a 1983 BC Rich Bich strung with custom D'Aquisto strings and fit with PRS pickups. The guitar was customized with the Danzig skull symbol, and is currently on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando.
In 1997, Christ was part of the short lived band Juice 13, which also included Randy Castillo, former drummer for Ozzy Osbourne. Christ's guitar work has been used by TV stations ABC and Nine Network.[During his time with Nine Network, he provided backing guitar for performances by artists including Tom Jones and Lou Rawls. In 1999, Christ released his debut solo album Flesh Caffeine. In 2004, Christ was involved in a serious crash and suffered injuries to his fretting hand. As a result of his injuries, he underwent lengthy rehabilitation. On November 27, 2009, Christ returned to the live stage for the first time in ten years with a solo performance in Essex, Maryland.
1988 - Danzig
1990 - Lucifuge
1992 - Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
1993 - Thrall-Demonsweatlive
1994 - Danzig 4
2001 - Live on the Black Hand Side

John is the man! I LOVE hearing/watching him show how he took Glenn's riffs and "made them right" as he puts it by embellishing/adjusting them. Lol. Fascinating for me as a long-time fan. I could honestly sit here and listen to him break down every Samhain(Final Descent)/Danzig he played on and what he added (and what Rick Rubin suggested, etc).

After watching the "Danzig Home Video" and seeing Glenn fooling around on guitar, I always assumed John brought A Lot to the sound of the band and to Glenn's songs and it's a shame that what both he and other MSD members contributed to the songs isn't considered "songwriting"..Some MSD fans may not like the comparison, but Nikki Sixx (more or less) does the same with MC, where he brings the skeleton of a song to the band and they then "flesh it out"and a song is formed!. Like Glenn, Sixx also writes ALL the lyrics and while he is not the "sole songwriter" like in Glenn's case, he contributes to most songs or is credited as the sole songwriter in many cases!..

@@Frumess I went to the first Danzig show at Shiddy Gardens. I was surprised by the turn towards metal but dood is a great guitarist. My memory of John was that before the show he walked into the the club with a gig bag for two guitars...this impressed me greatly. I had never seen a gig bag for TWO guitars. At least this is how I remember it.

21:41 I actually think the Glenster is a tenor that uses his lower range a lot. The notes at the end of She, just one example, are pretty high and he hits them easily.

I discovered Danzig and Samhain and The Misfits in high-school in the early 90's. John Christ is one of the guitarists that inspired me to play guitar. I have played ever since, over 30 years... I can do a lot of his riffs, but there is a lot of things I still can't pull off. I'm still learning new things whenever I go back and revisit those Danzig albums. Even though his jazz background is not quite so obvious in the band's sound, he is also one of a couple of metal guitarists that inspired me to learn guitar.

Jeff, great interview as always thank you for the Post. The high bar stool Chuck biscuits drum story, was probably adopted by players like Buddy Rich. Buddy Rich was pretty high on his drum stool as well, but I never thought that it had to do with an increased power for leg movement.

I want so badly to produce a Danzig album and give him a make over. He should be an icon in the truest sense of the word. Like Cash and Orbison. Can you imagine him with a white beard and mustache, a bad ass undercut with his bangs all long and slicked back, hair gone white.... In a black Italian suit with no tie and the top 3 buttons open? Big Lucifuge cross? Hank 3 and Assjack as his band? Come on. Call me, Glenn.

I've always felt that way. They deserve it. I used to play in a band (we were all influenced by all of Glenn's music) & our lead singer, even though he could play a little bit of guitar, wanted credit for all the songwriting. & for the songs the rest of us wrote, he'd credit himself for something as petty as a guitar or bass "fill" & crap like that. That band didn't last long 🤣😂 We did have a pretty decent local following though but you can't run a band like a hierarchy.

This reinforces a theory I have about Rubin basically taking rock bands and making them function as rap acts. The Cult, Danzig, Trouble - those records do a lot of "sampling", but instead of using records, they just used guitars. It's genius, because at the time, the rock scene was still very anti-sampling and looping (and, let's be honest, hip hop) and whined about it a lot. But when these bands Rubin was producing did the same thing - only with guitars, drums and production tropes - rockers fucking LOVED it. Rick basically turned these bands into break rock😂 amazing

41 minutes in: There's a question of "who gets what" when it comes to songwriting. "Money" by Pink Floyd has one credit of Roger Waters. But any guitarist with a brain knows Roger didn't point at the fretboard and tell Gilmour what to play. There's a 6/8 bass line and lyrics. That's all Roger. It can be argued that Pink Floyd should be the credit on that song. But without roots, there's no tree. That's why everyone in PF was so generous to Waters.

Completely disagree that Samhain was incomplete. The music to me was far more interesting than Danzig's solo work. Even the production I prefer over the bone dry production of Danzig. Atmosphere, vibe and raw expression goes a lot further for me than tight production. Hence, I still love Misfits and Samhain but grew out of Danzig decades ago.
