Let’s embrace some semblance of reality and face the fact that this thing was done and dusted before Pogačar completed a solitary pedal stroke. Hopefully Vingegaard can return to top form in the next edition! I keep wondering why most commentators are seemingly sad that Jonas is not winning. Bob Roll in particular is always talking about the race from the perspective of Visma without acknowledging the UAE strategy that seems to be working in support of Tadeh. Frankly, I love the competition and it just looks like Tadeh targeted a legendary year and it's paying off. Last year he was the one with the broken hand and couldn't ride for a while, but I haven't heard much comment about that. Visma stacked their team but didn't get their key guys in the TDF (Kuss) but UAE doesn't get credit for massively increasing their team capability. I have to say that I love seeing the unmitigated joy of Pogacar at the end of every race, even often when he doesn't win.

I think we forget about the situation of each grand tours. Jonas wasn’t vismas only option and tadej was fighting off a lot of attacks by himself the past two years. Tadej last year was injured and didn’t prepara the way he wanted to. Jonas this year is singled out it will be very difficult to drop him 3 min in this last week. But must say what a performance from jonas to be the only other gc rider actually up there with him 2 months after a horrific crash

Jonas came into this tour with compromised form and a compromised team while Pogi came into this tour with amazing form and easily the strongest team of climbers. When Jonas won, we saw UAE make many tactical mistakes while Visma had perfect tactics. In the past two mountain stages, Visma and UAE both had solid tactics for what they wanted to accomplish, and the difference was made by the quality of UAE’s roster and Pogi’s power. If both teams run tactics of equivalent quality (as in fewest mistakes), Pogi and UAE should always come out on top. Still, saying it is one thing and executing is another. This Tour is not over until they reach the finish line in Nice.

This year, for Pog, the under-fuelling debacle happened on stage 11 already! It came as a blessing in disguise coz now the team has become extra vigilant in keeping him cool and well fuelled as they proved on stage 15. Realistically speaking, that’s the ONLY stage where Jonas had an advantage over Tadej. The next mountain stages are shorter and less steep. Pog might take some more time in the final TT. Therefore, barring any unfortunate incidents, the race for Maillot Jaune is a wrap! Thanks for the insight! 🙏🦋

Clever insight. Chris is saying that Pogi’s power duration curve is actually higher than Vingegaard’s at every point right now. In the past (excepting Jonas’s absurd outlier time trial), their power duration curves have crossed with Jonas’s being higher in the section corresponding to longer high-powered climbs. Chris is claiming that Jonas can’t outperform Pogi unless Pogi doesn’t fuel properly. That makes sense to me.

The logic fails are immense here. These are not electric powered vehicles on controlled circuits where you monitor their power and their battery status. It doesn't work that way at all. All of the "power curve" claims are pure speculation. These estimates are only close in certain isolated sections, not for any length of time that you can talk about "power curves" except as pure speculation. Read that again: Pure speculation. You might ask Chris Horner if he ever raced with a power meter because I'm not sure that he has. Also, saying "higher curve in the section corresponding to..." makes no sense. Just use honest terms like "seemed stronger" and so forth. Most of Pogacar's hiccups have been "bonks" where he came up short because he "burned too many matches" (in Chris Horner's lexicon) earlier in the stage. And the crash last year for Pogacar, who seems to race and train entirely on feel (this is also what his conditioning coach claims) thought he had the power of 2021 for the Tour's critical moments but he didn't exactly "game it out" because Pogacar has never quite raced the same from year to year in the "Tour buildup" phase. The point is that if you actually had the power meter data you'd probably see taht he overdid it many times and then struggled to recover. It's not like Pogacar and Jonas do lab tests each day where you monitor everything and the biggest "watts to kilo ratio" wins. That's not even close to how it works. All pro cyclists must manage what they have to win. If you, once again, compare how Pogacar and Evenepoel race in the classics you will see that these are guys that struggle with patience and have enormous "burst power". They have to worry about "burning too many matches" whereas Jonas is at the opposite end of the spectrum. He is always waiting for key points in the stage. Heck, even his race director discussed this as Jonas took is first TdF Tour stage as a backup plan. Jonas's power is highly predictable. With patience and planning, Pogacar would never fail to beat him IF he prioritized winning the Tour above all other athletic goals. Pogacar does not race economically. Jonas always trains and struggles to manage his energy to make it count for the TdF win. All of this other nonsense is pseudoscientific gibberish.

Jonas has dropped Tadej multiple times even when he (Pogi) did not have anything wrong with him. You conveniently forgot 2021 Stage11 (Mt Ventoux x2) when Vingegaard dropped Pogacar for the 1st time. Also the Hautacam stage of 2022 TdF when WVA dropped Pogacar and Jonas went ahead and extended his lead (Tadej acknowledged that day that his own numbers were perfect, and the better rider won that day). Also the Time Trial in 2022 when Jonas beat everyone but slowed down a little at the end to let Wout win.

One thing I can't understand about certain fans' view about the Jonas vs. Tadej rivalry is the following: When Tadej wins everything from monuments to Grand tours in one year, it's simply because he is talented. Now he is probably about to do the elusive double (Giro/Tour), which hasn't been done since Pantani. He is an entertainer and rides to his strengths. When he attacks and uses his amazing explosivity, it is because he can gain something from it. And instead of appreciating Tadej for what he does, fans wants Jonas to do the same, which would in most cases turn to failure for Jonas. Personally I would hate if Jonas tried to be something, that he is not. Why can't we just appreciate the dynamics of this rivalry? And the differences of the riders?! I love the fact, that Jonas has been able to challenge Tadej these last couple of the years, so that the man doesn't win every god damn race. Furthermore, Jonas has been able to win the Tour for several reasons, and one of them being his meticolous preparation and focus on Le Tour. (All though he has also won other week long races and would probably have won more, were it not for this horrible crash.) When Jonas does something amazing on a bike, it's called suspicious. But when you take time to analyze the TT from 2023 you see the risks he takes, and how much time heactually takes on the descents... Much like how much time Tadej has been taking on descents this year. Jonas has been peaking for the Tour and Tadej has been peaking for several races. This year Tadej seems superhuman, and I'm not saying that he is doped, but I am saying that peaking so many time in a year and being that much better in every terrain is physically much more "incroyable", than winning Le Tour two years in a row spending your energy wisely. So if Jonas is doped, Pogacar sure as hell is doped too.

For Jonas to have any chance of taking time from Pogi, Tadej must have a bad or unlucky day. If Pogi stays on his bike and gets reasonable support from his team, he wins the TdF. For Jonas to finish on the podium 100 days after his injuries is remarkable, a true credit to his ability. I don’t agree with the analysis at the end regarding Pogacar vs Vingegaard. There is no way that a rider like Pogacar makes so many mistakes in terms of hydration and calories. He himself said earlier that he cracks very easy. Well, obviously he doesn’t very often, but he can overextend during at GT and hamper his recovery over time, which was exactly the reality in last two tours and in accordance with the Visma tactics. There is a lot more to cracking than calories and hydration, for instance the mitochondrial capacity with strenuous exercise, glycolysis, muscle recovery aso. Things that to some extend can be trained but are otherwise genetically determined. I think the tour is decided for now, Pogacar fitness and the lack of a such peak level of Vingegaard this time(although both are producing incredible watts) has simply not pushed Pogi through the tour to make him fall apart in week three, - also due to the lack of Visma team power on both flat and uphill terrain this tour. I think the gap between them will likely increase in the last week. But hopefully Jonas can gain some time, I hope that for the excitement as a viewer. Already looking forward to next years tour. The result this time really puts more excitement into it..

Chris... maybe your bonking theory is right, but, the recent 6.98w/kg of Tadej vs the 6.85w/kg over 39 mins, tells me that if Jonas would have not spent the last 3 months without racing and out of a hospital, that he would be as strong or stronger than Pogacar. Jonas explosiveness has never been as good as the Slovenian, but It seems to me Jonas doesn't have his own explosiveness this year, which makes sense after what happened to him.

I havent' heard anyone comment on the previous sprint finish when Pogacar was up with the sprinters until nearly the end with Jonas back in the pack. It was clearly an attempt by Tadeh to get some seconds on the finish during the sprint stage and was only thwarted by the fact that there was a crash. I thought that was a brilliant but risky tactic. Worked the other way around yesterday....

I know it was not always the case but you have to ride very differently whether you wear the yellow jersey or you want to challenge it. It's a lot more pressure to attack at the right moment, pick your battles well, then to defend and just stay in the draft. Ofc I am not saying that staying in the draft of Jonas is easy, but it seems easy for Tadej.

IIRC, Tadej said that he had digestive issues on the stage where he bonked. That is, it wasn’t forgetfulness or bad dosing, but the food was just sitting poorly in his stomach for unexplained reasons. I’ve definitely had food randomly sit like a brick in my stomach on long rides. This doesn’t mean it won’t happen again, but I think this is very unlikely to happen due to a “mistake”.

I don't think Jonas has the training depth right now to peak in the last week and/or the TT stage like in '23. TP might be looking to FLEX this year and win all three grand tours. Maybe we'll see JV, TP, RE and PR in the Vuelta after a few weeks of recovery and training. one can only hope.

If a rider abandons near the end of a grand tour but still has the most points at the conclusion of the race, are they awarded the final jersey or does abandoning prevent being awarded the final jersey?

Chris, your explanation for the last 2 tdfs is pretty bullshit. Tadej has never done the numbers he did in Jonas wheel this year not ever close, he improved 8% from his best for all former years. Jonas has beaten pogi completely with nothing wrong with pogi, that is just discredting Jonas completely. Stage 5 last year he just rode him off with 1 minute. First tdf 2021 he dropped pogi on ventoux showing he was the stronger climber. Jonas dropped him on heutacam 2022, on col de granon he dropped him, nothing wrong with pogi. The fact is its the first time at all pogi has shown he can follow is this year. Its not cause bonking or what ever. The numbers dont lie, he was never able to climb like Jonas before some of last year and this year. Dont forget Jonas is on a short training schedule coming off the crash. This year is literally the first time pogi drops Jonas for real when it has been the other way around for years. And then you say its just cause something was wrong with pogi everytime? You have to be really twisting your glasses for that explanation. In that case there has been something wrong with pogi about 6 times in the last tdfs.

I wish Primoz would get some deep therapy with a top notch sports psychologist to stay upright and stop sabotaging himself it seems. Or something simple like where he keeps his gaze to anticipate. Then came round 11 Jones came out punching, punching hard! His opponent was taking a severe beating. It wasn't long before Jones had punched himself out .The next round his opponent came out and unleased a fury of punches to the exhausted Jones and won the fight! Visma needs to be careful here and not punch themselves out and lose the race for sure.

I disagree with the take about Visma and pogacar. In 2022 Pogi lost the tour in the granon stage because Visma put pressure on him the whole stage and didn't let him have time to take his calories by isolating him early on, it was a strategy very well executed by Visma and it worked out, it wasn't just because Pogi made a mistake or cracked.

I’m gonna go on Record and say so far I have had the most accurate predictions of 2024 TDF. I am not saying I am better than anyone just saying I have been able to predict the race between GC riders better than any analyst, and I am out of professional sports for over a decade. I understand you have to be neutral and very fair and probably not able to say many things you want to say. So I get your perspective, but what I don’t understand is why people with so much conviction predict and bottom line offend Tadej is beyond my understanding… for example your buddies at The Move… yesterday they said 100% Pogaca and 100% Jonas, Jonas wins. I think that was 100% knucklehead statement. To be fair Lance didn’t say that. He was as surprised as I was when they made that statement.

@@ChrisHornerCycling But Tadej also never realy had a bigger Gap on Jonas in the Tour de France (were it matters, cause only here both are or should be in top shape) then this marginal Gap (even much less...I think only under 10 Seconds), since Jonas is the Team Captain. Its only the other way arround, that Jonas is having bigger gaps to Tadej. That is, what most people and also most experts forget to mention. And if we look back to 2020, Tadej was not even the best rider in the mountains. There he lost also time on the same mountain, he lost time against Jonas in 2023 (Col de la Loze). It was not a lot that he lost to Roglic and Lopez, but he also was only a little bit faster then Kuss that did not even pulled full (rightfully so), after he set up Roglic´s attack. If Jonas would be there in the shape as he was since he is a leader and not injured, he would put much more time into those guys. Cause one thing is for sure, if Jonas attacks, Sepp does not stay inside a few secounds behind him, if Sep is only finishing the stage as an helper. Then he puts minutes into him and so he also would had put minutes into everyone else. At least this possibility is much more reasanoble then the other way arround. And so Tadej is only put time into Jonas in the 2024 Tour...and this time Jonas was badly injured and its clear, that he can not be on his best form. So, as you can clearly see, on this topic you do not get your facts right. But like I often say, your channel is outstandig and I realy enjoy your content very much.
